Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) School of Veterinary Medicine - University of Wisconsin-Madison The Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for a 1-year training position in comparative ocular pathology with a negotiable starting date as early as April 2023. This full-time 1-year program is designed to provide training in comparative ocular pathology and vision science by exposing the candidate to an extensive diagnostic caseload with the goal of broadening the applicant’s knowledge of diagnostic ocular pathology and vision science. Our hope is for the successful applicant to be interested in staying on as a long-term team member. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects based on their interest. Extension of the appointment is possible depending on mutual interest. Time off for ACVP certifying examination study is provided, if necessary. COMPARATIVE OCULAR PATHOLOGY LABORATORY OF WISCONSIN (COPLOW): We are a mail-in ocular pathology service that provides high quality ocular pathology diagnosis, interpretation and consultation specifically designed to be useful for board certified veterinary ophthalmologists and general practitioners treating ocular disease. The service receives around 8,000 cases per year and has almost 100,000 cases in the database archive. We have four board certified veterinary pathologists on our staff: Dr. Gillian Shaw (Senior Staff Pathologist), Dr. Megan Climans (Clinical instructor), Dr. Richard Dubielzig (the founder of the lab, currently serving as a volunteer pathologist) and Dr. Leandro Teixeira (Director of the laboratory). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - The applicant would have a primary responsibility of managing the pathology case material, grossing and photographing the globes. - Reviewing slides at our daily readouts with Drs. Teixeira, Shaw, Climans and Dubielzig - Writing pathology reports and following up on special procedures and consultations with our clients. OTHER RESOURCES AVAILABLE: THE UW SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY SERVICE: The applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in multiple training and ACVP board preparation activities associated with UW’s anatomic pathology service, including: - Weekly diagnostic rounds and necropsy rounds from a diverse caseload from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Milwaukee County and Henry Villas Zoos, International Crane Foundation, Wisconsin DNR, and specialty clinics. - Weekly JPC (AFIP) rounds for honing microscopic description skills. - ACVP board prep gross pathology rounds - Weekly didactic pathology training sessions on a variety of topics THE SVM OPHTHALMOLOGY SERVICES, MCPHERSON EYE RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND THE DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY AND VISION SCIENCE: There are many lectures and programs in the broad field of vision science at the University of Wisconsin. REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution, be a US citizens or permanent residents, and be board-certified or board- eligible in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the European College of Veterinary Pathology. The position will command a salary of up to $100K annually depending on qualification with the expectation of incremental increases as time passes and if expectations are met. Mass multiplexing immunofluorescence and in-situ hybridization in FFPE have just started to decode our 200-year old oral tradition of interpreting H&E slides. If you've spent time around the engineers, microscopists, molecular biologists and bioinformaticians who are advancing this technology, you may have longed for someone you can discuss these technologies and data with from a histopath perspective. Long no more! We are starting a Multiomic Histopathology Journal Club where we can speak pathology and anatomy without wondering if anyone understands our language. 3RD YEAR RESIDENCY POSITION AVAILABLE, OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY Come explore the exciting world of pathology! The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in beautiful Stillwater, OK, invites applicants for a 3rd year anatomic pathology residency training position. We are seeking a highly motivated, hard-working, and dependable individual who has a DVM or equivalent degree, completed 2 years of an anatomic pathology residency program, successfully passed Phase I examination, and is interested in pursuing a career in diagnostic anatomic pathology. This is a full-time position for the duration of one year. Seven anatomic pathologists and three clinical pathologists are on faculty with a wide range of expertise, who recognize the importance of an enriched learning environment and understand that the ultimate goal is board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). In addition to the extensive and varied diagnostic case material presented to the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) each week, there are several rounds and seminars in addition to abundant archived material available for ACVP board preparation. There are also opportunities for creative scholarly activities. Independent studying and analysis of pathological concepts is also a key component of this program. Residents receive a travel stipend ($1500/year) to fund attendance and participation at pathology courses, workshops, and meetings designed to enrich their learning experience. Additionally, a one-time textbook stipend ($500.00) is afforded for each resident. Start date is July 31, 2023. Salary is $34,585 per year plus a benefits package that includes health insurance and fringe benefits. The Northeastern Vet Path Conference is back - and we are in person!

The NEVPC is coming back IN PERSON (only) this April, and we're going to the Zoo, literally! This year, the NEVPC will be held at the National Zoo in Washington DC (actually it is now the Smithsonian National Zoological and Conservation Biology Institute), on Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16. As in previous years, case presenters attend for FREE and the fee is only $50 for non-presenters and RACE credits will be available for this course. A lunchtime tour of the medical and pathology departments and a Saturday pay-as-you-go social event in neighboring Adams Morgan (the coolest place for DC nightlife) is planned. Job Opening - Veterinary Pathologist, UW Madison Primate Center, Madison Wisconsin (Onsite) Pathology Services Unit (PSU) staff work cooperatively with other WNPRC units to provide timely and accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring and interpretation of acute and chronic conditions affecting colony animals and subjects assigned to research studies. PSU staff serve an integral role in research at the WNPRC, offering services including but not limited to: clinical pathology testing; cytology evaluation; surgical biopsy; gross post mortem examination; specialized sample collections; and histology with unbiased interpretation of lesions in reference to the experimental questions and goals. PSU pathologists work closely with investigators to provide advice concerning protocol development (both pre and post award), anatomy, disease pathogenesis, sample collection procedures, and the modification and creation of innovative procedures to answer research hypotheses. Moreover, the outstanding services provided by the PSU rapidly identify confounding effects of pathogens and unanticipated biologic responses in both research studies and the primate breeding colony. The PSU works closely with investigators researching infectious diseases, vaccine development, reproductive health, transgenic animal models, models of aging, models of neurodegenerative diseases and neurophysiology, and stem cell biology. The PSU is responsible for the collection, banking/inventory, and distribution of nonhuman primate samples through both the Nonhuman Primate Biological Materials Distribution (NHPBMD) core and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Nonhuman Primate Tissue Bank. These banked tissues and biological samples are available to locally, nationally, and internationally located investigators for both research and education. RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides professional comparative and diagnostic pathology services and research support to veterinary professionals delivering quality veterinary care and research guidance. Develops and implements policies and operations for the pathology laboratory to ensure compliance with institutional policies, as well as federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Contributes to the field of laboratory animal veterinary medicine through academic output. - 5% Provides pathology expertise and support to veterinarians to ensure the proper management of colony health - 25% Provides pathology expertise and research support to research investigators including advice concerning protocol development, anatomy, disease pathogenesis, sample necropsy collection procedures, and the modification and creation of innovative procedures to answer research hypotheses - 5% May provide expertise to other units in areas related to comparative and laboratory animal pathology, preliminary toxicologic pathology (for translational research), research animal necropsies, and histopathology - 5% Contributes to the formulation, evaluation, and determination of new aspects of the pathology program to ensure high quality animal care and research support - 35% Provides diagnostic services for colony and research subjects including complete gross post mortem and histologic evaluation of laboratory research animals, and consults and problem-solves with investigators, veterinarians, and research support staff as needed - 5% Ensures quality assurance of histology and pathology work - 5% Serves as a resource regarding other pathology expertise available at other institutions, such as corporate entities, external diagnostic laboratories, and pathologists at peer institutions - 10% Provides and participates in training and education in laboratory animal medicine and veterinary pathology to keep abreast of developments in the field and contribute to its advancement - 5% Author, co-author, and review manuscripts, book chapters, and teaching materials to advance scientists? knowledge and training, including presentations at local, national, and international meetings.
