The Davis-Thompson Foundation has a new Tresurer!

Dear all It is an immense honor and privilege to announce that Bruce Williams has been unanimously elected to the position of Treasurer of the Davis/Thompson Foundation. Bruce has worked tirelessly for many years as the CEO of the Foundation and before as its president. During this time, he has been the driving force behind providing workshops, seminars and training courses in Veterinary Pathology, both locally and globally, travelling extensively himself and championing other pathologists of all ages, genders and races. His outstanding leadership and organizational skills have been fundamental in solidifying the Foundation’s reputation as the number one organization promoting the teaching of Veterinary Pathology in the world. Under his direction, the Foundation has gone from strength to strength with each passing year and, in these very difficult times, reminded stronger than ever. As the realities of COVID hit, Bruce was swift to recognize not only the necessity but also the great potential of online delivery and very quickly figured out the best way to get it done. We are now able to offer an enormous number of webinars and courses worldwide, and reach a substantially increased audience as a consequence of his efforts. If you know Bruce at all, you will know that he works unremittingly and is available for the Foundation 24/7. Pathologists young and old look to him as a model of what hard work, a good heart and a strong vision for the future can achieve. I am proud to be his friend and colleague and look forward to many years of collaboration to come. The Davis-Thompson Foundation has a new Chief Executive Officer!

It is my great pleasure to announce for the third time in its 47 year history, the Charles Louis Davis and Samuel Wesley Thompson Foundation has a new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Francisco (Paco) Uzal. A member of our Board of Directors for over fifteen years, Paco has risen through the ranks, being the architect of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group (LCPG, aka the Foundation’s Latin American Division), the first LCPG President, and ultimately, the Foundation’s first Vice-President for Latin American Affairs. His work, often self-funded, established Divisions in Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, and held courses in many others. Three years ago, he was elected President of the Foundation by the Foundation's Board, and has excelled in that job, overseeing the Foundation's courses all over the world, (which have ranged up to 50 in some years), as well as being the primary architect in the Foundation's response to the 2020 pandemic, expertly and quickly pivoting from in-person to virtual seminars, while most organizations were still trying to figure whether they would even be capable of having meetings. He has also served twice during that time as the President of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group, not only establishing it, but also establishing it as one of the best-regarded pathology educational organizations throughout Latin America. During his entire time as a member of the Foundation's board and its president, he has lectured for us around the world many times on topics ranging from diseases of horse and ruminants, gastrointestinal disease, and descriptive pathology, and is most assuredly one of our most popular speakers. Superlatives fail to do justice to Paco’s contributions to the field of veterinary pathology, and to the education of all those who practice it, especially those who are in the early stages of their career. It has been my great pleasure to work side by side with him in a shared vision of pathology education for everyone around the world, and it is my great honor to call him a friend. As a friend, I am posting a short bio below (to his great chagrin, as one of the most humble men I know) for those few pathologists around the world who have not had the good fortune to meet him. The position of Foundation CEO and the Chairman of its Board is one that is a career in the making, and a position that is a second career in itself. It calls for men and women of vision, and provides years of service to fulfill that singular individual's vision. Those of us who do it don't do it as a career box check, but because we are driven to improve global education in veterinary pathology, and to give back far more than we have been given, all the while allowing others to collect the credit and accolades. It is a job conducted largely off the stage And so, to the members and friends of the Foundation, I present your new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paco Uzal. ********** Francisco A. Uzal, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is a Professor of Diagnostic Pathology and Branch Chief of the San Bernardino Laboratory of the California Animal Health and Food Safety, UCDavis. He is a leading expert on clostridial diseases of animals with special emphasis in enteric diseases. Dr. Uzal has published ~ 250 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the senior author of the chapter on “Alimentary Diseases”, for the 6th edition of “Jubb, Kennedy and Palmer’s Pathology of Domestic Animals” (2015, Elsevier), and the first author of the recently published textbook on Clostridial diseases of animals (2016, Wiley and Blackwell). He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a member of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. Dr Uzal is an Associated Editor and Photo Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation and Anaerobe and member of the editorial board of several other journals. He has been the coordinator of the Post-mortem Program for the California Horse Racing Board for the past 12 years. He is currently the Vice-President of the Davis/Thompson Foundation and president-elect of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group. Over the past 15+ years he has mentored a large number of Latinamerican veterinarians and vet students visiting his laboratory in California and lectured in many countries of Latin America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. He received the 2016 Life Achievement Award from HENAA for his contributors to education in science and technology.

Black Voices in Pathology and FREE CE - this Tuesday!

The Davis-Thompson Foundation wholeheartedly and without reservation supports the Black Lives Matter movement. Since our inception in 1970, our tenets have always included that the Foundation does not discriminate against race. It is all well and good for an organization to issue a statement that says that they support Black Lives Matter, but we in the Foundation believe that now is a time for meaningful change. Our “Black Voices in Pathology” seminar on July 28 is only a first step. Our already diverse Board of Directors currently seats two black veterinary pathologists, Dr. Tiffany Lyle, head of our Correspondence Division and Dr. Lonzy Ojok of the University of Harare. We are adding a third prominent black pathologist, Dr. Angela Brice of the University of Pennsylvania, as a permanent ad hoc member to oversee all of the Foundation’s business from an inclusion and diversity standpoint. We look forward to working closely w ith her, and translating her ideas and input into programs that will better serve all of our members around the world. Beyond this seminar on Black Voices in Pathology, we will be having additional seminars, both day-seminars and our free Friday seminars which will highlight black pathologists and those in other minorities, whose voices are not always heard in our profession. It is our goal that one or more Friday seminars each month will be presented by a black pathologist or member of another minority group. This initiative is not only one that will be important for the Foundation in the United States, but one that we believe will translate well in all corners of the globe where the Foundation educates its members. In order to introduce our “Black Voices in Pathology” to its largest possible audience, we are providing a full day of free RACE CE to attendees. We also hope that our colleagues and friends will share this flyer within their veterinary schools, as this slate of speakers are an inspiring group and we hope many veterinary students will be part of this audience. Tomorrow, Dr. Dennis Wilson, Professor Emeritus of the University of California at Davis will give a lecture on “Animal Models of Respiratory Disease” which wile aimed at Australian pathologists who get out of bed on Saturday mornings, is available to the rest of the world as well (sorry again Europe - you always seem to be in bed for our seminars!). This seminar, which originates in California from 5-7PM (it’s late for me too, but I have to start it up at 8PM) will cover selected airway and parenchymal disease of domestic and laboratory species, including asthma, diffuse alveolar disease, and fibrotic diseases across various species. The lecture will collate cutting edge general pathology with histologic appearances of these various conditions. Dennis Wilson received undergraduate and veterinary medical degrees at the University of Illinois where he also obtained a master’s degree in Environmental Toxicology. After a short period of veterinary practice, he trained in Veterinary Pathology at the University of California-Davis where he received a PhD in Comparative Pathology and ACVP certification in 1982. After joining the faculty at Davis, he developed a research program in environmentally induced cardiopulmonary disease which continued until his retirement in 2015. He was at various times Associate Director for diagnostic services at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Director of the Environmental Pathology Training Program, Chairman of the Graduate Group in Comparative Pathology, Member of the ACVP Anatomic Pathology Examination Committee, and Chairman of the Department of Pathology, . Since entering emeritus status, he is a volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and consults in lung disease research. This lecture - "Tuberculosis: Everyone just has to be different" - will be presented by Kaori Sakamoto, DVM, PhD, DACVP, Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. This hour-long seminar will discuss comparative models for tuberculosis pathology, including both natural and experimental infections, with an emphasis on lesion similarities and differences between these species and humans. The Davis-Thompson Foundation wholeheartedly and without reservation supports the Black Lives Matter movement. Since our inception in 1970, our tenets have always included that the Foundation does not discriminate against race. It is all well and good for an organization to issue a statement that says that they support Black Lives Matter, but we in the Foundation believe that now is a time for meaningful change. Our “Black Voices in Pathology” seminar on July 28 is only a first step. Our already diverse Board of Directors currently seats two black veterinary pathologists, Dr. Tiffany Lyle, head of our Correspondence Division and Dr. Lonzy Ojok of the University of Harare. We are adding a third prominent black pathologist, Dr. Angela Brice of the University of Pennsylvania, as a permanent ad hoc member to oversee all of the Foundation’s business from an inclusion and diversity standpoint. We look forward to working closely with her, and translating her ideas and input into programs that will better serve all of our members around the world. Beyond this seminar on Black Voices in Pathology, we will be having additional seminars, both day-seminars and our free Friday seminars which will highlight black pathologists and those in other minorities, whose voices are not always heard in our profession. It is our goal that one or more Friday seminars each month will be presented by a black pathologist or member of another minority group. This initiative is not only one that will be important for the Foundation in the United States, but one that we believe will translate well in all corners of the globe where the Foundation educates its members. In order to introduce our “Black Voices in Pathology” to its largest possible audience, we are providing a full day of free RACE CE to attendees. On 26 June 2020, at 1200PM EDT, The Latin Comparative Pathology Group is pleased to present a "Free Friday Seminar" on "The pathology of selected diseases caused by toxic plants in cattle" by Dr. Claudio Barros, DVM, Ph.D., DACVP, Professor of Pathology, Laboratório de Patologia Animal, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. In Brazil, there are at least 131 described toxic plants belonging to 79 genera. Annual livestock losses due to plant poisoning-associated deaths are estimated to range from 820,761 to 1,755,763 cattle, 399,800 to 445,309 sheep, 52,675 to 63,292 goats and 38,559 horses. In veterinary diagnostic laboratories around the country,approximately 15% of necropsy diagnoses involve plant poisoning, and in the deep south of the country, themain cause of death in cattle is poisoning by Senecio species. Due to time restrictions, we will address cattleintoxication considering only five plants, namely, Senecio spp. (ragwort), Pteridium arachnoideum (brackenfern), Ateleia glazioviana, Senna occidentalis (coffee senna), and Vicia villosa (hairy vetch). A very important and overdue note of thanks...

Recently I have gotten a lot of really nice emails about the good work that the Foundation is doing with our virtual seminar series and how it really is filling a void left by the cancellation of so many meetings this year. I just want people to know that while my face may be all over it (sorry I’m not more Brad Pitt-like), there is absolutely no way I could do all this by myself, and there are a lot of people who deserve notice and credit. I am remiss for waiting this long to do it... First and foremost, our Foundation President Paco Uzal, who puts in such incredible long hours keeping everything running, if not smoothly, then with that appearance (and really, which is more important?) It took a lot of years to find someone that not only shared my vision, but could rearrange their schedule (yes, we all have real jobs that pay the bills), to make it a reality. Paco is incredibly devoted to international education, and he has brought the same fire with him to global (and national) education that he did to Latin American education before he became President of the entire Foundation. There is also a great crew of young (at least younger than me) pathologists who are spearheading the "Virtual Seminar Committee" and are responsible for doing all of the heavy lifting, as there are a lot of moving parts. RACE requires applications to go in on time, evaluations to be created, and certificates to go out on time. We need moderators for the seminars, ideas for the seminars, people to corral speakers. They brought a much more advance online evaluation system to the Foundation (why did I wait so long?). Even the videos have to be edited and cleaned up (blank spaces taken off the front and end and if you see some of the ones from yesterday, we now have a cool intro and watermark. Here are the people who make me look good when I upload the videos and flyers. I am putting some of the things they do beside their name so when you see their work, you will think of them: (but everyone pitches in to get everything done and some are so good at everything, they haven't found a niche!) Jeann Leal - (our graphic designer - all those flyers) Laura Bassel - (Survey Monkey and boy is the output amazing) Rafaela De Negri - (great moderator) Laura Setyo - (great moderator) Sophia Rosales Martinez - (she is a much better moderator than she thinks) Rachel Neto (she writes great reviews for the newsletter and can do anything behind the scenes) Whitney Zoll (RACE applications, certificate distribution - this sounds easy but it is a killer) Neha Mishra (certificates) Brigid Troan - (did you see her moderate this last Tuesday - that's 11 hour's folks and she was perfect till the end!) Marie-Odile Benoit-Biancamo - (video editing and she may just have the longest name in the Foundation!) Will O'Neill - (video editing, and I rarely involve residents as they have more important things to do) and of course Jim Britt - who makes sure we ALWAYS get our RACE credits. The Davis-Thompson Foundation is delighted to announce that Dr Claudio Barros, a legend in the field of veterinary pathology, will be the new Editor In Chief of the Diagnostic Exercises of the Davis Thompson Foundation and the Latin Comparative Pathology Group. (http://www.cldavis.org/diag_exercise.html) Dr. Barros will take over for Dr Vinicius (Vini) Carreira who served in this role brilliantly for 10+ years and who, together with the Editorial Board, took the DE to the high level and reputation they enjoy today all over the world. Thank you Vini!! Dr. Barros graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, in 1969. He then received his PhD in Veterinary Pathology at Colorado State University in 1980, and did a Post-Doctorate at the Veterinary Pathology Institute of Justus Liebig Universität Giessen, Germany, in 1984. He was a Professor of Pathology at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (1971-2014), and Visiting Professor at Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil (2014-2020). Amongst his many accolades, Claudio was a Member of the Consulting Scientific Committee for Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply and a member of the Brazilian College of Animal Pathology. He is an Emeritus Member of the Brazilian Association of Veterinary Pathology and Honorary Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He was the Editor in Chief of “Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira” (Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research) for many years. He was the recipient of the Paulo Dacorso Filho award, 2016 edition, conferred by the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine of Brazil. Claudio has been a teacher and mentor of many generations of Brazilian pathologists and he is one of the greatest pathologists in Latin America and the world. Welcome Claudio!!! Passing of Dr. David Tyler, University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine

[image: 101642376_10158689158712873_8770691911309590528_n.jpg] It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Dr. David Tyler, Joshua Meigs Distinguished Professor of Pathology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. In addition to a distinguished teaching career, and being one of the two founders (with Dr. Wayne Crowell) of Noah's Arkive, which has served countless veterinarians around the world for over thirty-five year, Dr. Tyler inspired countless young veterinary students to pursue a career in veterinary pathology, including one young CPT Bruce Williams, who knew after his first two tours in the Army, that a career in pathology was what he wanted to pursue.. Dave Tyler was one of the kindest professors I ever met, and he brought pathology "back to life" on a daily basis. I never had the chance to tell him how in four years of veterinary school with many outstanding teachers, he was the one who inspired me, but I hope that I have done him proud. His obituary: "David Earle Tyler went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2020. The third son of the late Guy Earl Tyler and Beatrice Virginia (Slack) Tyler, he was born in Hartford, Iowa. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1946. He served in the Army at the end of World War II as an MP in Alaska. Following his military service, he enrolled at Iowa State University (ISU). He earned both a B.S. in Animal Husbandry and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at ISU. During his studies at ISU, David met his sweetheart, LaVon Smith whom he married in 1952. They remained married for 66 years until LaVon's death. Following graduation from ISU, Dr. Tyler joined the faculty at Purdue University as an instructor in veterinary science. While at Purdue, he earned his M.S. degree. David then returned to his alma mater to join the faculty in the veterinary pathology department. During his time as a faculty member at ISU, he completed his Ph.D. degree and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathology. In 1966, he was recruited to become the head of the veterinary pathology department at the University of Georgia (UGA). He accepted the challenge and the whole family moved south to Athens, Georgia. He spent the remainder of his professional career at the UGA, College of Veterinary Medicine until his retirement in 1991. David was a highly respected scientist, veterinarian, and teacher. It was his role as a teacher that particularly brought joy to his professional life. His excellence as an educator was acknowledged on multiple instances by his students and his colleagues. He was named a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor by the University of Georgia. This is the highest honor for excellence in instruction at UGA. He was also the inaugural winner of the national Zoeitis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award. David was a master woodcarver and enjoyed teaching carving to friends and his colleagues. He also enjoyed traveling abroad with LaVon, and gardening at their home on Sunnybrook Drive. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Athens, Georgia for 46 years where he served as an elder. He and LaVon became members of the Grace Community, United Methodist Church following their move to Fort Mill, South Carolina to be closer to family in 2012. David was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who supported and protected his family. He is survived by his sister Georgene Tyler Fawcett; son John Tyler; daughter Anne Tyler Sink; two grandchildren Christina Sink Smith and Laura Sink; great-grandson Ian Smith; sister-in-law Martha Tyler; son-in-law Merritt Sink and grandson-in-law Tyler Smith. For family members, there will be a service at Peterson's funeral home in Carlisle, Iowa on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 2 PM. Social distancing and cloth masks will be part of the service. Video streaming of the service will be available for those not able to attend. Graveside services will follow at the Hartford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Grace Community United Methodist church of Fort Mill, South Carolina or the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Athens Georgia.

Free Friday Seminar - 28 May - Immune-mediated drug-induced liver injury

You are invited to a "Free Friday Seminar" on 29 May at 1200 hrs EDT sponsored by the Latin Comparative Pathology Group. This virtual seminar is entitled "Pathology of immune-mediated drug-induced liver injury in immuno-oncology checkpoint inhibitor combination", and is presented by Timothy Affolter, DVM, PhD, DACVP of Global Pathology, Pfizer Drug Safety Research and Development, La Jolla, CA. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPI) are the cornerstone drugs of immuno-oncology and generally act by promoting T cell activation with subsequent tumor cell killing. Current animal models under predict the incidence and severity of immune-related adverse events observed with CPI drug combinations in the clinic. We have developed a novel mouse model that closely recapitulates these immune-mediated adverse events in the setting of a combined checkpoint blockade. Co-administration of a CTLA4 blocking antibody and an IDO1 inhibitor to PD1 knockout mice drives inflammation and necrosis in the liver, and more sporadically in other tissues, with histopathologic phenotypes similar to what has been reported clinically. Immunophenotyping of the inflammation revealed an expanded oligoclonal population of CD8+ T cells, with elevated ICOS and CD44 expression. Several novel technologies including laser capture microscopy, digital image analysis, and single cell transcriptomic analysis were used to further characterize the expression of several activation and exhaustion markers in infiltrating CD8+ T cell population. Global depletion of CD8+ T cells attenuated CPI-induced liver injury. Our speaker was Professor Leslie Woods of the University of Califonia at Davis, who spoke on "My Favorite Avian Diseases. - (with a short introduction on virulent Newcastle disease by Paco Uzal) “My Favorite Avian Diseases” includes a potpourri of infectious, nutritional and toxic diseases of poultry and companion birds emphasizing gross and microscopic characteristics of the diseases. Diseases with similar gross pathological changes are compared, with distinguishing microscopic features discussed. Some may not even be distinguished microscopically and require ancillary testing for definitive diagnoses of the diseases and as a special added bonus, a brief description of the gross lesions of virulent Newcastle disease is presented by Foundation President Paco Uzal, with emphasis on those lesions that are pathognomonic for the disease and which are used as a screening to call a case compatible or not-compatible with vND. 2020 POLA is now a telecourse!

The 65th Annual Pathology of Lab Animals Course is on, and this year, will be a telecourse! (Now there are no excuses for you NOT to participate). 5 days of lectures on the pathology and diseases of laboratory animals - rodents, non-human primates, laboratory fish, rabbits, minipigs, ferrets, and a mock exam! It's a great way to review classic diseases and get updated on the latest ones! The tuition is half of the in-person 2019 course - only $300 for Foundation individual, university, and corporate members, and $400 for non-members (this comes with a one-year membership in the Foundation). And handouts galore! (Some say this is the best part of the course - with great reference material you will use forever.) This course has been submitted for (but not yet approved) for 32 hours of continuing educations in juridisictions which recongnize RACE. Equine Diseases Virtual Seminar - 12 May - 8 hour RACE credits available

Wondering where you can get your CE to renew your license this year? Here's an exciting announcement from the Foundation - On 12 May, the Foundation will hold its first in a series of biweekly Day-Seminars, which will provide 8 hours of RACE-accredited CE for veterinarians who need to meet license requirements (and some that don't, I suppose). Our first seminar will focus on various aspects of equine pathology, with great speakers. Tuition is $50 if you desire the eight hours of RACE-accredited CE (with certificate, of course!) If you do not need the CE, the lectures will be posted on our YouTube channel in the days following the seminars., and you can watch them for free. Registration is limited to 500 seats, (registration link at the bottom of this flyer) and we expect that a number of vets in other discipline will jump on this opportunity as well, so don't wait. Additional seminars coming on 26 May, 9 June, and 23 June for a total of 32 available hours. To all of the many very interested parties who were unable to get a seat in our upcoming webinar on "Updates of Clostridial Disease".... This webinar filled to overflow in approximately 20 mins. (I do hope that everyone who snagged a seat plans on showing up or you have stolen a seat from someone who really wanted one.) For those of you who couldn't get a seat - not to worry, as the webinar will be pre-recorded and uploaded to the Foundation YouTube channel concurrently. For those of you who wonder why the Foundation doesn't have more seats available... a) We are pre-recording it and it will be available to everyone at no charge (didn't I just say that?) b) The 30 minutes of Q and A at the end would be absolute CHAOS with more than 100 people. c) With literally over TWO HOURS of experience in tele-education, we are learning this as we go along. We have no tele-education budget, we are handing out course refunds like hotcakes, and right about now we are the only vet path organization that is offering anything telewhatever. So we ask that you are patient as we adjust to a rapidly changing paradigm. If we find that limiting live seats to these webinars is a serious mistake, I promise we will fix that going forward.

More excellent news from the Foundation! Beginning Friday 3 April, the Foundation will present the first in a series of biweekly one-hour webinars (with an additional 30 minutes for Q&A). These webinars will be presented at 12PM Eastern Standard Time. Our first webinar, entitled "An Update on Enteric Clostridial Diseases". This webinar, will be presented by Foundation President and UCDavis Professor of Pathology Paco Uzal, emphasizing gross and morphologic lesions in animals, will also cover recent discoveries on the pathogenesis of enteric clostridial diseases in animals, and recent changes in clostridial taxonomy and toxin classification. These webinars are free, and there are currently 100 seats available for this first webinar on a first-come first serve basis. The webinar will utilize computer audio only (there are no dial-in numbers). PLEASE, if you are not sure of your availability to attend, do not take a seat away from someone who can by reserving "just in case". 2020 Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course is now a telecourse!

We have excellent news concerning this year's Descriptive Pathology Course. This course will continue on 1-5 June, as planned, but will now be conducted entirely online as a telecourse. Lectures will be presented on the Zoom platform, gross and microscopic exams will be graded with personal feedback as in all iterations of this course, and virtual slides will be utilized in place of glass slides. There are currently 34 seats remaining at this telecourse, and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tuition for this course is $350 for individual, university, or corporate Foundation members, and $450 for non-members (which includes a one-year Foundation membership.) We regret to inform our participants and colleagues of cancellation of two of our early April meetings for 2020. After careful consideration of the expanding coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. and around the globe, travel restrictions now imposed of many of our attendees and presenters, and most importantly, the safety and welfare of our course participants, the Foundation has decided to postpone the Northeast Veterinary Pathology Conference in Silver Spring, MD, as well as the 2nd Spanish Seminar on Swine and Ruminants in Lleida Spain. It is our promise, having already discussed this matter with our co-sponsors, the Joint Pathology Center and MAJ Sarah Cudd, our local host for the NEVPC, and Drs Simon Priestnall, Alejandro Suarez-Bonnet, and our local host, Dr. Gustavo Ramirez, (for the Lleida meeting ) that we will reschedule both meetings at the earliest time when it is appropriate to do so. Cancellation of 2020 Gross Course

Due to the likely unavailability of our planned venue, we regret to notify our registrants, faculty and our colleagues that the Foundation has decided to postpone the 2020 Gross Pathology Review Course. We appreciate that The Ohio State University is acting with abundant caution in the face of the expanding COVID-19 outbreak in the US and we certainly understand their position. The uncertainty surrounding this global event is unfortunate, but we are confident that in retrospect, this will prove to be a prudent decision. The safety and welfare of our participants is our highest priority. For our registrants – we will be processing your full refund starting today. The local course director, Dr. Krista LaPerle, and the course faculty have requested the opportunity to host this course in 2021, and we have already agreed. We understand how important this course is to pathology residents and graduate students studying for certification examinations around the globe. Dear Colleagues: Attached please find a complete listing of Foundation meetings attached as a PDF document. At the current time, all of these course listed on these two pages are a “GO". Our current course in Pakistan is in its last day, and our meetings in the first week of April, the 2nd Spanish conference in Lleida, Spain and the Northeast Veterinary Pathology Conference are ON. Rest assured that the Foundation officers are conducting daily review and discussions with speakers and local course directors or our meetings in coming months, and the safety and well-being of our participants is our primary concern. We are currently evaluating a number of criteria that may impact any of our courses, including but not limited to government-issued travel advisories and restrictions for particular areas, emerging patterns of spread of COVID-19, rirline cancellations and other disruptions that will affect travel to and from course destinations, evolving University policies on speaker travel as well as the ability to congregate in a course setting, and any other factor that may impact our ability to conduct a seminar or course. It is our intent on each course to correspond frequently with our participants in order to share any information in days and weeks leading up to all of our courses. This is a unique situation in the history of the Davis-Thompson Foundation, and as a global community, we are all in this together. Cancellation of Foundation Courses

After much consideration of the expanding coronavirus outbreak in Europe, Asia and around the globe, and in careful consideration of the safety and welfare of our course participants, the Foundation has decided at this time to postpone four Davis-Thompson Foundation meetings in 2020. The meetings include our Comparative Cytopathology Course (Zagreb 8 May), Diseases of Aquatic Animals (Valencia 16 May), Diseases of Exotic Animals (Moscow 12-14 May), and Microscopic Descriptive Techniques (Beijing, 7-8 July). This is not a decision that we have come to lightly, as we consider the impact of the virus on regional and international travel as well as the potential restrictions that may be placed on exposed individuals upon entry or exit to areas in which the coronavirus has been identified. We believe that none of our registrants are in a position to be quarantined or delayed either abroad or at home, not to mention the possibility of exposure during travel, or in congregation at a Foundation course. The uncertainly surrounding this entire global event is unfortunate, but we are confident that in retrospect, this will prove to be a prudent decision. Please be advised that we are also at this time evaluating our entire slate of 2020 courses as this event unfolds. It is our promise, having already discussed this matter with our speakers and local hosts at these courses that we will reschedule these meetings at the earliest time when it is appropriate to do so. [image: Diseases of Ruminants and Pigs.jpg] Come and join us at the University of Lleida, Spain for this two-day workshop run by world-class speakers Prof Paco Uzal (University of California, Davis) and Dr Joaquin Seagles (Autonomous University of Barcelona, UAB). The course is aimed at clinical veterinarians, pathologists, trainees and students or anyone with an interest in ruminant and porcine diseases and pathology. There will also be a practical session on the second day where participants will be able to put the theory into practice under the guidance of our experts. Numbers for the practical necropsy session are limited to 30 and will be on a first-come first-served basis. To register for the necropsy please email Dr Gustavo Ramirez ( gramirez(a)ca.udl.cat) NB the workshop will be in English. *Submission of cases of ruminant or porcine disease for discussion is encouraged and this can be done by submitting a short (no more than one page) history to spriestnall(a)rvc.ac.uk before the 23rd March 2020. The best cases will be selected by the organisers for presentation and discussion (max 15mins per case) during the workshop. There will be prize for the best presentation!

If you are not familiar with the JPC's Wednesday Slide Conference, it is weekly slide conference (well 25 weeks a year) in which over 125 institutions submit two cases and writeups each year. Now in its 65th year, the results are a fantastic trove of information on pathology of all types in all species.
