Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Dear colleagues Welcome to the December issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation (DTF) newsletter with the compliments of our brilliant Managing Editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. Thank you Javier and Jeann. November was a very active month with training activities all over the world in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Amongst the latter, was the 3rd Venezuelan Seminar of the DTF and Latin Comparative Pathology Group, in Barquisimeto, Venezuela on November 21 and 22. The Seminar was an utter success, but when the international speakers were ready to fly back to their home countries (Spain and Argentina), most major airlines suspended flights to and from Venezuela. Our Venezuelan colleagues, led by Dr. Yaritza Salas, were not deterred by this and immediately organized travel by land and air for our speakers to Cucuta, ~600 km from Barquisimeto on the Colombian side or the border with Venezuela. From there, the speakers flew to Bogota where they took international flights home. This episode is a perfect example of the resiliency of our speakers and the brilliant way our hosts look after our speakers. Thank you Yari! As always, the Foundation continues with its training activities even under the most difficult circumstances. Please peruse these pages to find myriad training opportunities all over the world in several languages for the rest of the year and in 2026. Also, enjoy the reports on our most recent training activities. Amongst those, I want to highlight Dr. Brian Murphy's outstanding DTF Latin American Roadshow, through which he visited Chile, Brazil and Mexico, lecturing for 12 hours in each country. This was an enormous effort that received overwhelming positive responses from a grateful audience and the DTF. Thank you Brian! Finally, I close this message with a heartfelt thank you to one of our very special volunteers and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation: Dr Mike Dark. Comparative Pathologist Penn Vet Comparative Pathology Core, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA Job Description: The Penn Vet Comparative Pathology Core (CPC) at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for a research fellow position in experimental and comparative pathology. The CPC is an established core facility within the Department of Pathobiology and a fully integrated shared resource within the NIH/NCI-funded Abramson Cancer Center since 2015. The main mission of the CPC is to provide expert pathological characterization of experimental animal models to fulfill the growing needs of the local biomedical community performing in vivo studies as part of their basic and translational research endeavors. In this context, the CPC plays a vital role as it supports several major research programs within the University of Pennsylvania and closely related institutes such as the Abramson Cancer Center, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute. To accomplish its mission, the CPC offers the expertise of board-certified veterinary pathologists and access to a state-of-the-art platform for histology services, molecular staining of tissue samples, and digital pathology. This position will primarily contribute to the mission of the CPC by providing expertise in experimental and comparative pathology. Main responsibilities and duties include: • Expert interpretation of pathological endpoints in the context of diverse preclinical/experimental settings with accurate and timely reporting of pathological findings. While humanized and genetically engineered mice represent the majority of the caseload, studies using rats, dogs, non-human primates, sheep, and pigs are also frequently performed. • Interaction with scientists and investigators to design experiments, discuss results and plan follow-up studies as pertain to the specific research context. • Provide guidance to investigators, students, and laboratory technicians in all those activities and techniques related to comparative pathology (e.g., necropsy, sample preparation, development of multiparametric histopathological scoring system, digital image analysis, etc.). • Contribute to the general management and supervision of routine laboratory activities/services, including hands-on participation in laboratory activities to become familiar with concepts and applications of molecular and digital pathology. • Contribute to the teaching/training of veterinary pathology residents and veterinary students rotating with the CPC. This position represents a unique opportunity for candidates who want to deepen their understanding of comparative pathology applied to the most innovative aspects of translational research including the study of in vivo models for cellular therapies (e.g., CAR T cells, stem cells, and mRNA-based therapeutics). While the primary role of this position is to support the Comparative Pathology Core, the program offers ample opportunity to carry out independent projects focused on developing accurate clinicopathological strategies to assess the phenotype of new and existing experimental animal models. In that context, The CPC is well integrated within the core facility network on campus with access to state-of-the-art services such as in vivo imaging, electron microscopy, next generation sequencing, bioinformatics, etc. Qualifications: Applicants should have a DVM/VMD and be board-eligible or board-certified in Anatomic Pathology by the American, European, or Japanese College of Veterinary Pathologists; experience with rodent pathology and digital image analysis is desirable. The salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications, training, and experience. The application deadline is February 27, 2026, or until the position is filled. And speaking of editors, this month we are thrilled to share with you the news that Dr Jeann Leal received the award “Patologista Destaque Junior" at the Brazilian Congress of Veterinary Pathology ENAPAVE 2025. We are enormously proud of him. Congratulations Jeann! And continuing with awards, the DTF former Barbara Jeann Thompson Service Award has been renamed to honor two long standing members of the Board of the Directors of the Foundation who for many years have done so much for the success of our mission: Annette Gendron-Fitzpatrick and Jim Britt. Congratulations and thank you Annette and Jim! These, together with the whole list of awardees celebrated during the award ceremony of the DTF at the ACVP meeting are presented in this newsletter. Congratulations everyone! October has been an incredibly busy month for the Foundation, with activities in many countries, including the myriad sessions during the annual meetings of the ACVP and AAVLD (the latter currently going on). Although November is upon us, there are still many more training activities coming up before the end of the year, and we are, of course, planning a full program for 2026. The Davis-Thomson Foundation invites you to submit digital gross, microscopic, or ultrastructural images depicting a lesion, to be featured on the front page of the monthly newsletter. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Submission information: · Submission deadline: submit anytime; all submissions roll over to be considered for future covers if we have already selected an image for the upcoming newsletter. · *Send your image by e-mail to: * o Dr. Kate Watson and Dr. Donald McGavin: images(a)davisthompsonfoundation.org Figure Requirements (see examples below): · Do not exceed the maximum file size of 5 MB. · Acceptable formats are TIFF and JPEG. o *Minimum acceptable resolution is 300 pixels/inch* (120 pixels/cm) for half-tones (i.e., photographs, histology images). § When you are saving a file such as a TIFF from any package such as Photoshop, you are given the option of compressing the file. LZW compression will speed up the upload and download times and will not affect your image in a negative way. Figure Legend provided within the email or as a word document attachment separate from the image file: · Name/names of contributors and their affiliated institutions. · Brief (no longer than 2 sentence) description of the lesion including: o Signalment o Diagnosis o Any other pertinent information you want to share Cheers, Drs.
