Dear colleagues Please find attached the November issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, with the compliments of our great managing editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. Please peruse these pages to find great information about our virtual and face to face activities in many countries of the world. As usual, we have training activities in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The annual ACVP meeting just concluded. Amongst the several activities of the Foundation during the congress, we organized the pre-meeting workshop "Tumors of the Urogenital System: No Kidneying, Ovary-reacting, or Testifying!". The workshop was a resounding success with a room overflowing with attendees that, together with the fantastic speakers, made for a very instructive and interactive session. Also look up the report on our traditional Award Ceremony, when residents and our beloved volunteers were recognized. Finally, this year, the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the DTF was held at the headquarters of the Foundation in Gurnee, less than an hour from Chicago. Senior Lecturer: · A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; · A MMedVet(path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European / American board-certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP); · Registered or amenable to be authorised with the SAVC; · At least 2 years’ experience in a diagnostic veterinary pathology laboratory / institution; and · At least two peer-reviewed paper in the field of veterinary pathology in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author. Associate Professor: · A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; · A MMedVet(path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European / American board-certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP); · Registered or amenable to be authorised with the SAVC; · Five years’ experience as a specialist in veterinary pathology; · At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co- author; · A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience; · Successful supervision of Masters students; · The ability to attract independent research funding; · Participatory membership of professional bodies; and · Evidence of academic scholarship and professional national recognition. Professor • An appropriate PhD-degree; • Registered or amenable to be authorised with the SAVC; • Significant national and international professional recognition; • Substantial experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in national and international accredited journals with focus on Veterinary Pathology; • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience; • Successful supervision of several students on Masters, PhD and post-doctoral level; • Proof of the ability to attract independent research funding; • Participatory membership of professional bodies; • Evidence of academic scholarship; • Evidence of community engagement; • Experience in field-based research; • Significant international professional recognition; and • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship. Residency/Fellow Training in Diagnostic Anatomic Pathology California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System University of California, Davis The California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS), School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis is offering a two-year residency training program in anatomic veterinary pathology. The position is also open to applicants who have completed a residency but wish additional training and/or experience (i.e. fellow). The program is designed to provide specialty training for those interested in gaining experience or advanced training in diagnostic veterinary pathology mostly on production animals, as well as herd health and public safety. The training involves extensive diagnostic casework on food animals, equine, poultry, exotic avian species, and a variety of zoo and wildlife species. Residents/fellows will gain practical and diverse experience through the various laboratory disciplines (e.g. bacteriology, immunology, toxicology) while working up the cases. Casework is supplemented by weekly case and biopsy conferences, gross rounds and seminars. Annual presentation of one or more case reports at a national diagnostic/pathology meeting (AAVLD or ACVP) is encouraged. Successful outcome of the training program includes board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP). The current salary for the first year of the residency program is $50,183. Continuation in the 2nd year of the program is contingent upon mutual satisfaction on the part of both the resident/fellow and the CAHFS. Qualifications and requirements for admissions include: DVM or equivalent degree, at least one-year of pathology experience and effective communication skills both orally and in writing. You’ll also work in collaboration with a diverse range of user groups including facility veterinarians, welfare officers, virologists, immunologists and cell biologists to manifest world-class research outcomes. This role will require you to work with dangerous pathogens, at times at high levels of biocontainment (BSL3 and BSL4). As part of the Pathology and Pathogen Biology Team, you will work closely with advanced light and electron microscopists to support a host of diagnostic and research endeavours. You will also play a key role in the development and optimization of visualization assays for novel pathogens such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation. Veterinary Pathologists at ACDP are encouraged to develop their own research portfolio and encouraged to sit on various internal and external committees including national advisory boards. You will also be expected to contribute to the training and mentoring of early-career veterinary pathologists and scientists from broad-ranging fields. Your duties will include: - Provision of a prompt and accurate service in veterinary anatomic (and if appropriate clinical) pathology in support of ACDP’s diagnostic and research program. This includes, but is not limited to, the provision of a necropsy and histopathology interpretation service to the facility. - Collaborate with and provide ongoing technical feedback to ACDP’s Histology Laboratory to ensure the maintenance of optimum quality output across a host of methodologies including histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. - Provision of plans for as well as the oversight of necropsy procedures and tissue collections for research projects, including projects conducted at BSL3 and BSL4. - Utilizing your expertise to interpret gross, microscopic, ultrastructural, and clinical pathology findings in research projects. - Collaborating with teams across ACDP to aid in the detection and control of transboundary animal diseases and other zoonotic and emergency diseases in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region by the provision of pathology expertise and training. - Identifying, engaging, and communicating with key stakeholders in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and other relevant federal, state and non-governmental organisations to increase ACDP’s profile and influence. - Represent the ACDP Pathology and Pathogen Biology Team at internal meetings and take on other leadership roles when required. - Operation under and support the maintenance of quality assurance systems, including ISO17025 and good laboratory practice (GLP) and engaging with external proficiency testing as necessary. - Producing scientific papers and reports suitable for publication in quality journals, for presentation at national and international conferences, and for communication with customers. Manages and provides diagnostic and consultative services to veterinary practitioners, animal owners and producers, and regulatory officials. As a veterinary pathologist performs gross and microscopic examination of animal tissues, and prepares thorough, comprehensive reports of such findings. Assures that data generated from test results are conveyed accurately. Provides rapid notification of reportable disease results to Pathology Section Head, Laboratory Director and the State Veterinarian. Develops a working knowledge of routine laboratory assays and obtains proficiency for testing in assigned area. Maintains working knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and utilizes this tool for case coordination and reporting. Assists with overall technical, managerial, and fiscal operations of the laboratory. Keeps the Pathology Department Head and Laboratory Director informed of all issues of administrative, logistical, diagnostic, and regulatory concern. Routinely reviews scientific periodicals and literature for information pertinent to the laboratory, including new techniques that could, if adopted, improve the diagnostic services of the bureau. Undertakes gross anatomical pathology duties on a rotational basis and participates in the case load of animal tissue slides submitted for microscopic examination. Consults with in-house pathologists, professional laboratory staff, as well as the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) and university pathologists, to enhance diagnostic skills. Monitors inventory for supplies, equipment, and materials for supervised areas of operation. Ensures adequate supply of time sensitive materials and monitors expiration dates. Ensures that procurement orders are initiated in a timely manner to maintain adequate stock to prevent depletion. Ensures equipment and facilities are maintained in an orderly fashion and operated according to proper procedures. Provides a variety of assigned written reports utilizing a personal computer. Maintains data and statistics for assigned areas in a contemporaneous fashion to ensure data is readily available when leadership requests are received. As a Veterinarian Pathologist this position serves as Head of the Necropsy Section: a) Oversees the daily operations of the necropsy section. Prepares a weekly and monthly schedule of necropsy services for the gross examination of carcasses, appropriate collection and distribution of samples for analysis to different sections of the laboratory, as well as to third party laboratories. b) Provides mentorship, coaching, training and guidance to direct reports. c) Maintains direct communication with the facilities manager to assure the proper maintenance of the crematorium, and of the necropsy suite. d) Responsible for the upkeep of the necropsy equipment, and the cleanliness and disinfection of the necropsy suite. Assures appropriate stock of supplies to preclude disruption of operations of the necropsy room. Prepares worksheets requesting supplies as needed. In coordination with the Pathology Department’s Quality Assurance (QA) Coordinator and Bureau QA Manager, develops quality assurance procedures and ensures that appropriate quality control methods, and biosafety standards are enforced and maintained. Monitors and resolves sample quality issues and performs testing troubleshooting and problem solving. Composes Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), forms, uploads and update necropsy quality control records in Qpulse. The incumbent is required to participate in emergency planning and response exercises and/or preparedness for surge outbreaks of classic or foreign animal diseases. Dear colleagues Welcome to the September issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation Newsletter. As always, this is the result of the great job done by our brilliant managing editors Drs. Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. with the collaboration of many volunteers. It is with a heavy heart that I start this message announcing the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Dr Valentín Pérez, a Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of León, Spain. Valentín passed away prematurely at the age of 58 on August 7th. Valentín was a wonderful colleague, a great teacher and researcher, and a frequent and generous presenter for the Foundation. With his death, the entire veterinary pathology community loses one of its finest members. Please see the Obituary presented by the Spanish Society of Anatomic Veterinary Pathology in the following pages. As always, this edition has announcements on abundant opportunities in person and virtual all over the world, in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
