Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. The Department of Veterinary Biosciences (VBS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), in conjunction with the James Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking applicants for a clinical-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Comparative/Laboratory Animal Pathology. *Position Overview* As a member of the Comparative Pathology & Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR), the comparative pathologist will provide pathology expertise and support for investigator-initiated research with an emphasis on preclinical toxicity/efficacy studies and the phenotypic characterization of genetically modified mice to researchers utilizing animal models. The CPDISR is committed to leveraging digital imaging and new analytical approaches to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms and accelerate drug discovery. Thus, expertise in and/or interest to develop expertise in new analytical approaches is highly desirable, and collaboration on research grants is encouraged. In addition to contributing to CPDISR activities, the successful candidate will be actively involved in training of veterinary students and veterinary pathology residents in the OSU-CVM combined pathology residency/Ph.D. program. The CPDISR ( https://cancer.osu.edu/for-cancer-researchers/resources-for-cancer-research…) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-recognized OSUCCC Shared Resource currently supported by two anatomic pathologists specialized in comparative/laboratory animal pathology/phenotyping. Additional CPDISR team members include a prosector, certified medical technologist, certified histotechnologists, and digital pathology team. The CPDISR provides necropsy support, hematologic and biochemical analyses, histochemical, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence services, and digital slide scanning on two scanning platforms. Near-future Shared Resource service plans include incorporation of quantitative image analysis software and consultation/support. *Performance Objectives* The position is predominantly research pathology service with an opportunity for collaborative research (approximately 70%), teaching (approximately 20%) and administrative service (approximately 10%). Faculty Position Announcement Diagnostic Laboratory Services Director The University of Tennessee invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment as Director of Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Services in the Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences (BDS) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) in Knoxville, Tennessee. This position is offered as a full-time, clinical- or tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending upon the applicant's qualifications. The UTCVM's diagnostic laboratory services provide broad expertise in anatomic pathology services (diagnostic biopsy and necropsy), bacteriology/mycology, clinical pathology, endocrinology, parasitology, pharmacology, and virology/immunology. Diagnostic laboratory services are supported by 20 faculty, 31 staff, and 6 residents. Collectively, the laboratories accession just over 61,000 samples annually (56% originate from within UTCVM and 44% from outside the UTCVM). In addition to supporting companion and farm animal health, the diagnostic laboratories also support the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA), Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), and east Tennessee agricultural producers. While the primary mission is diagnostic, research support is provided to UTCVM clinical departments and other entities on and off campus. Ongoing laboratory initiatives include ISO 17025 accreditation for selected units and tests, expansion of poultry testing services, and pending implementation of a new laboratory information system. Future goals include, but are not limited to, implementing centralized laboratory sample receiving, developing a comparative pathology service to support research, and working towards further accreditation and becoming a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) partner. The Director will hold a significant administrative appointment (anticipated 70% effort). Administrative duties include supervising, facilitating, and promoting diagnostic laboratory operations at a high level, including budgetary development and oversight, monitoring caseload data, and performing cost analyses; securing resources; maintaining infrastructure; performing stakeholder outreach; regular strategic planning; and change management. The Director will be expected to work closely with individual laboratory units, the UTCVM Dean, Associate Deans, Department Heads, Hospital Director, Referral Services Director, Business Office, Facilities Manager, UTIA Advancement, and Media Relations to supervise, set policy for, strategically plan for, and promote the diagnostic laboratory services. The Director will be a member of the Dean's Leadership Council and Veterinary Medical Center Hospital Board. In addition, the Director will represent the diagnostic laboratory services in interactions with TDA, TWRA, USDA, and other state and national veterinary and agricultural entities. The Director will also be expected to provide diagnostic service in one of the laboratory units (exact effort allocations and service duties to depend on the successful candidate's qualifications and interests) or contribute to the college's teaching mission. Qualified applicants must have: (1) excellent interpersonal and communication skills, (2) excellent leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to work with and mentor others in a collegial team atmosphere, (3) excellent administrative and management skills (4) a DVM degree (or equivalent) and/or PhD in a relevant scientific field, (5) at least 5 years' experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting, and (6) at least 3 years' supervisory or directing experience. 2025 DTF Racehorse Necropsy Workshop, September 18th to 20th Join us in beautiful Lexington, KY this September for the third annual Davis Thompson Foundation Racehorse Necropsy Workshop. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me? Thursday and Friday didactic sessions are open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory support staff. The Saturday wet lab is limited to 20 participants, with preference given to pathologists and pathology residents. In addition, the faculty member is expected to work well as a team member and collaborate within the department providing support to clinical faculty and field veterinarians with the aim of solving problems in the poultry industry. A laboratory will be provided. The Department or Population Health is a multi-disciplinary department composed of 4 units. The position is located at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC) in Athens, Georgia. The PDRC is part of the diagnostic network for the poultry industry of Georgia. In addition, the PDRC actively provides support to the poultry industry throughout the United States and in many countries around the world. The Davis-Thomson Foundation invites you to submit digital gross, microscopic, or ultrastructural images depicting a lesion, to be featured on the front page of the monthly newsletter. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Submission information: · Submission deadline: submit anytime; all submissions roll over to be considered for future covers if we have already selected an image for the upcoming newsletter. · *Send your image by e-mail to: * o Dr. Kate Watson and Dr. Donald McGavin: images(a)davisthompsonfoundation.org Figure Requirements (see examples below): · Do not exceed the maximum file size of 5 MB. · Acceptable formats are TIFF and JPEG. o *Minimum acceptable resolution is 300 pixels/inch* (120 pixels/cm) for half-tones (i.e., photographs, histology images). § When you are saving a file such as a TIFF from any package such as Photoshop, you are given the option of compressing the file. LZW compression will speed up the upload and download times and will not affect your image in a negative way. Dear colleagues, Welcome to the February issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, brilliantly prepared, as always, by our great managing editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. Thank you, Javier and Jeann! This issue is full of great training opportunities all over the world and in several languages. Amongst these, I want to highlight POLA, CLIIC (both in the US and in the UK), the Australian Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course, the Latin American Roadshow and our free virtual seminars in Spanish. New this year are the General Pathology Course in Spanish and the Spanish version of Introduction to Veterinary Histopathology Course. Stay tuned for the announcement of great virtual seminars in English throughout the year. Our YouTube videos are, as always, very popular. This month, in an effort to broaden the reach of our material, we are proud to announce the inclusion of Portuguese close captions to some of our YouTube videos. This is a great ongoing effort put in motion by Alexandre Arenales and Maria Eduarda Cordeiro, and coordinated by Rafaela de Negri. Thank you, Alexandre, Maria Eduarda and Rafaela.
