*Tenure Track Clinical Pathology Position* *North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine* The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure track Clinical Pathology position at the rank of Assistant/ Associate Professor. A DVM (or equivalent) degree and ACVP or ECVP board certification or eligibility are required. A PhD in a related discipline is desired. The successful candidate will join our dynamic and collegial team of clinical pathology faculty, residents, and a well-staffed Clinical Pathology Laboratory. This position contributes to the teaching, research and service mission of the Population Health and Pathobiology Department. The candidate is expected to teach DVM students, provide clinical service for the hospitals, participate in resident and graduate student training, and provide support for the clinical pathology laboratory. Teaching commitments will include didactic and clinical year student courses, small group teaching, elective courses, and mentoring of students. The candidate is expected to develop a research program that advances the field of clinical pathology through the application of diagnostic tools, exploration of mechanisms of disease, pedagogical exploration, and / or applied clinical research; research is both independent and collaborative. Research is expected to complement existing areas of strength within the department and college while meeting the needs of residents and stakeholders. The University of Minnesota (UMN) Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is looking for one or more, board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologists to provide flexible, contract remote diagnostic support for the UMN-VMC Surgical Biopsy Service. The samples primarily originate from our surgery, oncology, and internal medicine services with approximately 2-5 cases per day. Responsibilities of the position comprise the review of digital slides, the timely provision of reports containing descriptive and diagnostic information befitting an academic tertiary care center, and electronic availability for UMN-VMC clinician communication. Reports should also provide up-to-date interpretive and additional staining and diagnostic recommendations. As necessary, additional immunohistochemical or special stains can be requested. The working hours are up to the discretion of the pathologist with an expectation that reports be generated in a timely fashion following case upload. The surgical biopsy service is primarily focused on canine and feline patients with infrequent large animal submissions. Call for submissions JVDI call for submissions on Interstitial lung disease in domestic animals. Interstitial lung diseases frequently represent a diagnostic challenge for veterinary diagnosticians. This challenge can be identified at all stages of diagnosis, particularly with gross and histologic interpretation. Moreover, each animal species varies in pulmonary physiology, pathology, and frequency of different diseases, which add more layers of complexity to this already-difficult pattern. We aim to expand our knowledge of this intricate pattern to better investigate our lung submissions, describe lesions, and finally diagnose interstitial lung diseases. We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on *Interstitial lung disease in domestic animals* to be guest edited by Dr. Francisco R. Carvallo, Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, and Dr. Jeff Caswell, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by September 30, 2024. Primary research papers, case series, and reviews of a focused topic will be considered, as will single-animal case reports if they are novel and include a review of the literature on the focused topic of the report. For abstracts on topics considered suitable for the special issue, authors will be notified by October 30, 2024, and full submissions will be expected by April 30, 2025. Submitted manuscripts will proceed through the usual JVDI peer-review and editorial processes, with publications expected in the fall of 2025. *Call for papers on the pathology of humanized mouse models* ** Over the last decade, the use of humanized mouse models engrafted with a variety of tissues and cells of human origin has become one of the experimental paradigms most frequently used in translational research. This has been possible thanks to the establishment of genetically engineered mice with severely impaired innate and adaptive immune systems, such as NSG or NOG mice, offering a highly permissive recipient environment for the functional integration of the xenotransplanted human components. Humanized mouse models have been successfully employed for diverse experimental applications, including patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) models, preclinical testing of cellular immunotherapies, and other non-neoplastic human diseases. However, a series of unintended post-transplant disorders have been characterized in recent years. These disorders are clinically relevant for mouse recipients, limiting their usage, especially for longer-term studies, and represent potential experimental confounders for interpreting preclinical data. Given the increasing importance of humanized mice, raising awareness of inherent limitations and unintended consequences of human chimerism is paramount to better understanding the preclinical relevance and translational potential of these models. To this aim, veterinary and comparative pathologists working with immunocompromised and humanized mouse models are uniquely positioned to help define the spectrum of experimentally induced and spontaneous (infectious and noninfectious) conditions affecting these chimeric animals through intentional and pathological characterization. UMN CVM Anatomic Pathologist Position - Surgical Pathology

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota, invites applications for an outstanding contract (non-tenure) part-time (approximately 50% appointment) Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UMN VDL). The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate consistent with Collegiate and University policies. Opportunities to increase effort appointment over time exist. The UMN VDL is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians, scientists, educators, companion animal owners, and the livestock and poultry industry by identifying and monitoring emerging diseases and developing new diagnostic methods. The UMN VDL is also the official laboratory for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH). The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide surgical pathology service and resident training. The role will provide diagnostic pathology support focusing on biopsy cases routinely submitted to the UMN VDL, and delivery of comprehensive diagnostic case information in a concise and well-organized manner to the College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Center, practicing veterinarians, and other animal health professionals. Responsibilities will include review of glass and/or digitized histopathology slides (histochemical and immunohistochemical stains) and generation of reports including diagnoses, microscopic descriptions, photomicrographs, and pertinent comments. Other key responsibilities include the incorporation of ancillary test results and case information and consultation with both referring veterinarians and faculty veterinarians in the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. The person in this position will be actively involved in surgical pathology training of anatomic pathology residents and other specialty residencies. While the caseload is composed primarily of companion animal biopsy cases, it is expected that the candidate may also receive cases from other species, including food animal, avian, or wildlife submissions. The successful candidate must have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of veterinarians teachers and researchers. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional diagnostic service, dedication to all levels of education, and contribute to the national prominence of the UMN VDL, VPM Department, and the University of Minnesota. JUST TO BE CLEAR - the JPC's WSC is NOT being discontinued. The WSC, now in its 71st year, will begin its 2024-2025 conference in a week and as always, we look forward to it. Since 2017, self-assessments and free RACE credits have been offered to participants. While utilization of this offering was very high during the pandemic, since the return of in-person courses and many additional online CE seminars from various organizations, the number of folks using the WSC for CE has dwindled to the low single digits, so self-assessments and RACE CE is no longer being offered. THE WEDNESDAY SLIDE CONFERENCE ITSELF IS IN NO DANGER!!! (Make sure to check the website at the end of next week for Week 1 results.) Zoetis Reference Laboratories (ZRL) is seeking a full-time Anatomic Pathologist for the US reference laboratory business. Zoetis Reference Labs is a new division of Zoetis Global Diagnostics. This role will primarily involve interpreting histopathology samples and consultation with veterinarian clients. Histopathology at Zoetis Reference Laboratories is almost entirely digitized, and this position can be remote, based in the United States. A pathologist interested in working onsite in the Louisville laboratory is preferred. The successful candidate must have a passion for supporting the veterinary community. This is a values-driven organization where service is the priority. *RESPONSIBILITIES:* - Examine digitized and rarely glass histopathology slides (histochemical and immunohistochemical stains) to generate reports that include diagnoses, microscopic descriptions, photomicrographs, and pertinent comments. - Correlate ancillary test results with pathology findings and case information. - Consult with referring veterinarians on cases and general anatomic pathology questions. - Share subject matter expertise via internal consultations with other anatomic pathologists and occasionally with other veterinary specialists (clinical pathologists, etc.) - Participate in various laboratory initiatives/committees beyond diagnostic cases, including recruiting/interviewing, SOP/policy development, and discussions to increase team efficiency. *QUALIFICATIONS:* - DVM (or equivalent) - ACVP/ECVP Certified or has completed an anatomic pathology residency training program and is eligible for board certification. - A state license to practice veterinary medicine or eligibility for a state license. - *KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:* - Required - Strong diagnostic skills in general anatomic pathology - Strong verbal and written communication skills in English - Highest interpersonal and communication skills and ability to collaborate with team members. - Able to work at a fast pace while maintaining a high level of quality/accuracy. - Flexible to changing methods and technologies. - Strongly preferred: - Expertise in one or more of the following subspecialties: - Mammary gland/reproductive pathology - Liver pathology - Gastrointestinal pathology - Bone pathology - Oral pathology - Experience with digital pathology in a diagnostic setting *PHYSICAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS* - Able to work hours on a computer and tolerate computer screens. - Able to physically tolerate reading diagnostic cases digitally. - Some travel possible Please contact Katherine Gailbreath at Katherine.gailbreath(a)zoetis.com with any questions. Dear Colleagues Welcome to the August issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, with the compliments, as usual of our outstanding managing editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. It is with heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Dr Mary Anna Thrall, on July 14. Dr. Thrall was an incredibly accomplished clinical pathologist, who was a prolific and generous contributor to the DTF. During many years she taught clinical pathology for anatomic pathologists for the Foundation in many countries. A full article about her great life is in the following pages. This issue is, as always, full of information about the training activities of the Foundation all over the world in several languages. See them in the following pages or in our website: https://davisthompsonfoundation.org/ Remember that registration for one of our newest courses, Foundations of Pathology, is open and there are still a few seats available. Consider registering soon because once registration is complete, we will not be able to accept new registrations. And do not forget the 3-day hands-on Racehorse Necropsy Workshop co-sponsored by the Horse Integrity and Safety Authority, a "must" for those doing necropsies of racehorses. For this particular workshop we have also created a waiting list (see registration page), so if you do not manage to secure a seat, we will consider doing a new version later in the year or early in 2025. One of the many highlights of our July training activities, was the "Just in time mock exams", an incredibly successful two-day meeting attended by a large number of aspiring veterinary anatomic pathologists (good luck to all of you!!!).
