The position is located at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC) in Athens, Georgia. The PDRC is part of the diagnostic network for the poultry industry of Georgia. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Submission information: · Submission deadline: submit anytime; all submissions roll over to be considered for future covers if we have already selected an image for the upcoming newsletter. · *Send your image by e-mail to: * o Dr. Kate Watson and Dr. Donald McGavin: images(a)davisthompsonfoundation.org Figure Requirements (see examples below): · Do not exceed the maximum file size of 5 MB. · Acceptable formats are TIFF and JPEG. o *Minimum acceptable resolution is 300 pixels/inch* (120 pixels/cm) for half-tones (i.e., photographs, histology images). § When you are saving a file such as a TIFF from any package such as Photoshop, you are given the option of compressing the file. Dear colleagues, Welcome to the February issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, brilliantly prepared, as always, by our great managing editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. Thank you, Javier and Jeann! This issue is full of great training opportunities all over the world and in several languages. Amongst these, I want to highlight POLA, CLIIC (both in the US and in the UK), the Australian Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course, the Latin American Roadshow and our free virtual seminars in Spanish. New this year are the General Pathology Course in Spanish and the Spanish version of Introduction to Veterinary Histopathology Course. Stay tuned for the announcement of great virtual seminars in English throughout the year. Our YouTube videos are, as always, very popular. This month, in an effort to broaden the reach of our material, we are proud to announce the inclusion of Portuguese close captions to some of our YouTube videos. This is a great ongoing effort put in motion by Alexandre Arenales and Maria Eduarda Cordeiro, and coordinated by Rafaela de Negri. Thank you, Alexandre, Maria Eduarda and Rafaela. Registration for US and European CLIIC courses is OPEN!!

Registration is OPEN for both the US (held at University of Tennessee in Knoxville June 2-6) and the UK/European (held at Cambridge University June 30-July 4) CLIIC courses! This is the first time this wonderful IN-PERSON ONLY course has been held in Europe, so if you are in Europe/UK and studying for the ACVP or ECVP exams, you don't want to miss it. Although the faculty will be more limited in number, the material will not. Registration deadlines are one week prior to the start of the course. Don't miss out by procrastinating! This course is a systems-based review of veterinary pathology including current literature (past 5 years), relevant textbooks, as well as thousands of gross and microscopic images (histopathology and cytology). Attendees will receive over 600 boards-style multiple-choice questions, both knowledge (literature and textbook based) and image based. Questions are embedded in the presentations via live polling, but attendees will also receive the questions with references in the course materials. This course replaces the previously offered Gross Course and differs from it by the addition microscopic images (histopathology and cytology) and current literature review, to better reflect the current ACVP exam format. No matter which certifying exam you are taking, or even if you are already a working pathologist, this course is an excellent review of the most current state of knowledge about a wide variety of diseases and species. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We can only accept credit cards for registration payments; we cannot accept bank transfers or any other alternate forms of payment. IZVG Pathology was established in 2003 and provides dedicated anatomic pathology services for the practice’s zoo, aquarium and wildlife conservation work. IZVG Pathology works from our own fully equipped post- mortem facility and histology laboratory situated within IZVG’s main building in Keighley, West Yorkshire. Keighley is on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and within easy travelling distance of the Lake District, and close to the larger cities of Leeds and Bradford. *The role: *Working alongside our existing principal veterinary pathologist, who will be your direct line manager, with two histology technicians, and supported by zoological medicine clinical specialists, you will take immediate responsibility for a caseload that comprises significant numbers of marine aquarium fish, non-domestic mammalian (particularly primate), avian, and lower vertebrate species, as well as invertebrates. Diagnostic histopathology will be a major part of your daily work, for IZVG’s own clients and for external clients including veterinary surgeons and referral laboratories. Necropsy examinations are also a frequent (typically daily) and irreplaceable feature of our work, occasionally necessitating travel off-site. A network of external collaborators enables us to source additional diagnostics as necessary. Opportunities exist for input into conservation projects in association with field biologists and vets. *The person:* MRCVS (or immediate eligibility) and a postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Pathology are essential (FRCPath, DipACVP, DipECVP or equivalent), as are robust diagnostic and communication skills. We are particularly seeking experience and enthusiasm for fish pathology, and experience with other non-domestic animal pathology would also be an advantage. Whatever your prior experience you will be expected to demonstrate a genuine interest and enthusiasm for aquatic species pathology and a willingness to develop relevant expertise rapidly, with a commitment to providing the best quality diagnostic service to our clients. Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Research Triangle Park, North Carolina Staff Scientist Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch (CMPB) The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Research Triangle Park, NC is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Staff Scientist to support the Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch, CMPB in the Division of Translational Toxicology, formerly known as the Division of the National Toxicology Program (DNTP). The mission of the DTT is to improve public health through data and knowledge development that are translatable, predictive, and timely. The DTT provides critical data for regulatory and non-regulatory stakeholder decision making to protect human health using epidemiological data, in vivo studies, alternative in vivo model systems, in vitro high-throughput screens and/or computational approaches. To achieve its mission, DTT scientists 1) collaborate with public stakeholders and global partners to identify and address public health issues, 2) generate and communicate trusted information to support decision making on environmental hazards, 3) lead the transformation of toxicology in the development and application of innovative tools and strategies, and 4) educate and train the next generation of translational toxicologists. DTT’s scientific goals are achieved through a distinct, highly cooperative and integrated team science operational model whereby scientific staff across multiple branches assemble into interdisciplinary project teams and utilize centrally managed shared resources, in contrast to the traditional NIH principal investigator-led research group model. The majority of research is carried out through use of external research and development contracts together with onsite intramural research capability. CMPB is a key contributor to DTT’s efforts to lead the science of toxicology and environmental public health by providing toxicologic pathology leadership and laboratory animal medicine expertise to meet the goals of the DTT using new technologies in biomedical research. A major function of the Branch is to provide a translational and mechanistic context to pathology outcomes with the integration of scientific data across all DTT branches and offices. In addition, CMPB trains pathology and laboratory animal medicine fellows to be leaders in multidisciplinary research. CMPB scientists and staff are responsible for the following general functions: developing new methods, approaches, and technologies in pathology and laboratory animal medicine. In addition, the Branch directs, manages, evaluates, and interprets all pathology data generated during the conduct of DTT toxicity and carcinogenicity studies, directs the DTT laboratory animal medicine program, establishes standards, terminology, and diagnostic criteria for rodent pathology, investigates molecular mechanisms of spontaneous and chemically induced nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in DTT studies, leads state-of the-science core pathology laboratories, oversees the scientific activities of the DTT archives and frozen tissue bank, provides diagnostic pathology expertise and collaborations with NIEHS investigators and the NIEHS laboratory animal colony. Roles and Responsibilities: NIEHS is seeking a staff scientist for Mouse Embryo Phenotyping (MEP) group within CMPB, in DTT, at NIEHS. MEP work is project-driven and supports divisional interdisciplinary investigators to advance its mission of providing broad support and training in mouse embryo phenotyping techniques in support of the NIEHS vision and mission. The scientific goals for MEP are achieved through a distinct and highly cooperative and integrated team science operational model, providing project assistance through the utilization of shared NIEHS Core facilities. A principal role for this position is to assist NIEHS investigators in assigning molecular underpinnings to developmental phenotypes encountered in genetically modified mouse models. The staff scientist will manage and be the lead contact for all project submissions to the MEP group. The staff scientist partners with a team consisting of a histologist and pathologist with expertise in developmental biology, tissue handling and pathology tailored to embryo phenotyping of genetically engineered mice under study. Additionally, the MEP staff scientist collaborates across the Institute to stay abreast of novel approaches and best practices for the integration of information technology and other solutions that may serve to scientifically advance projects submitted to the MEP group. As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources as a principal investigator, although they will often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the branch. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a research-based professional degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., D.V.M., or equivalent) in the life sciences. The candidate will have experience in developmental biology, the generation of genetically engineered mice and mouse embryo phenotyping. In addition, the candidate will have demonstrated a strong working knowledge of histology, pathology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, cellular biology, systems biology, and Next Generation Sequencing. As manager, the candidate must take a lead role in guiding and collaborating with NIEHS investigators in the discovery of a phenotype. The candidate should have knowledge and the ability to recommend to investigators and participate in advanced molecular techniques (e.g., spatial transcriptomics) that have the potential to aid in understanding the phenotype and advancing the project. The candidate must have strong leadership, organizational and communication skills to successfully manage the Core, advise, and instruct NIEHS trainees on how to move forward with their respective projects, and to provide advice to senior staff with respect to core facility expertise and operations.
