The successful applicants will be prepared to enhance the service, teaching/training, research, and outreach missions of the CVM and VDL. The individual will be expected to spend a minimum of 50% time on diagnostic service (biopsy and necropsy). The remainder of the appointment will be tailored to the successful applicant's interests and experience in teaching, research, and outreach/academic service. We encourage applications from candidates with an interest in liver pathology or dermatopathology, but this is not required. The Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) addresses contemporary and emerging issues in human and animal health by advancing knowledge in biomedical sciences, leading the continued development of diagnostic methods that meet ever-evolving needs, and providing exceptional professional training in the diverse and multi-disciplinary fields of pathobiology. PDI delivers innovative pre-clinical and clinical education that fosters exploration and provides knowledge in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree Program; develops the next generation of scientists through multi-disciplinary and innovative graduate programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in the Comparative Molecular and Integrative Biology (CMIB) program; creates an environment where faculty, researchers, and students conduct innovative research that generates new knowledge in pathology; and supports the mission of Michigan State University, contributing to science and public health by developing new solutions to the world's health challenges and disseminating that knowledge through scholarly and community engagement. The MSU VDL is one of the premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the world and provides full-service laboratory support to the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as to clients nationally and internationally. The VDL anatomic pathology section provides surgical and molecular pathology and necropsy services for all species. The surgical pathology service receives submissions from around the world, with more than 19,000 biopsy submissions in 2023. The service incorporates specialized testing and services, including oncopathology, dermatopathology, ocular pathology, and hepatic and gastrointestinal specialties; melanoma and mast cell tumor diagnostics and prognostication; lymphoma clonality testing; automated immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization; and genetic testing. The necropsy service has large, well-equipped BL2 and BL3 necropsy suites, designated rooms for avian necropsies, demonstration viewing areas, and advanced telecommunication and digital gross imaging equipment. Other capabilities include performance of GLP studies, laser capture microdissection, generation of tissue microarrays, and electron microscopy. The VDL is devoted to staying on the cutting edge of diagnostics, including a 'green' (xylene-free) histology department with automated slide staining and cover-slipping, digital PCR, and next-generation sequencing. In addition, the section hosts a large and well-established residency program that provides faculty the opportunity to participate in training the next generation of veterinary diagnosticians. Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and board certification or eligibility by the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP or ECVP). The appointed individual must be strongly committed to providing outstanding professional diagnostic services in anatomic pathology for our private veterinary general practitioners, specialty veterinary clinics, and other diverse clients of the MSU VDL. The VDL is the primary pathology service for six zoos, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Within MSU, the VDL supports the research community and serves colleagues at the VMC. The VMC is a major referral center for companion animals, horses, production animals (livestock), and occasionally exotic species. It has outstanding veterinary medical professionals and facilities and offers an excellent environment for professional growth and advancement in anatomic pathology. Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University and are predicated on the need to enhance programs in education, clinical/diagnostic service, and collaborative research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize diagnostic service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity. Dear colleagues It is my pleasure to welcome you to the May issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, with the compliments, as usual, of our outstanding managing editors Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. As usual, this issue comes with information on myriad training opportunities around the world, in several languages. Remember that two of our "Big 4", CLIIC and POLA are coming soon and registration is open. POLA and our Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course are also offered in Europe this year. Please see below the words of the Foundation's President, Dr Jey Koehler about our Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course: "This year, our beloved Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course will be transformed into Foundations of Pathology. The course will have a three-day virtual component in September and two half days of in-person instruction at the ACVP meeting in Seattle. While some of the material will remain the same, there will be new material as well and all will be aimed at the early stage trainee. We highly recommend that this course be taken by first-year residents. Topics will include introduction to evaluating and describing gross, microscopic, and ultrastructural lesions, interpreting IHC/ISH and molecular testing, as well as study techniques, structuring study during your residency, networking with other trainees, understanding the role of self-assessments, and more! Due to reduced travel costs for lecturers, we will be offering this course for much less than the in-person DVP. The tuition will be a flat rate of $400, which will cover both the virtual and in-person components (sorry, no, they cannot be separated). Scholarships will be available, with priority placed on those in training programs in under-resourced countries. Attendance at the in-person component is limited to 40 people due to prior arrangements with the meeting hotel. *FNLCR/NIH/NCI Pathology Fellow* *PROGRAM DESCRIPTION* The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) supports biomedical research at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). We are offering a one-year post-doctoral fellowship for candidates seeking experience in lab animal pathology to prepare for a career in industry or research. LASP is a highly collaborative environment with access to multiple state-of-art core labs. This position is targeted to board-certified veterinary pathologists or board-eligible trainees. As this fellowship is designed to assist candidates in preparing for boards (ACVP, ECVP), board preparation time will be allowed. Fellows will train under a team of veterinary pathologists in the Molecular Histopathology Laboratory (MHL) and the Center for Advanced Preclinical Research (CAPR) with a focus on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Trainees will gain practical experience applying pathology training in a research environment, including phenotyping, digital image analysis, and toxicologic pathology. *Key Roles/Responsibilities – **This posting is contingent on future openings. T**his position is a one-year term with possible extension.* - Become familiar with all phases of pathology-driven research, including study design, gross & microscopic examination of laboratory animal species, molecular pathology (IHC, RNAscope, multiplex IF), digital imaging, and advanced histotechnology techniques (tissue microarray construction, laser-capture microscopy, nucleic acid characterization, etc.) - Utilize bioimage analysis platforms (HALO, QuPath) in biomedical research applications to gain an understanding of how artificial intelligence can be applied in modern pathology laboratories. - Application of emerging pathology-enhanced research tools, including Nanostring (GeoMX, CosMX), Akoya (CODEX, Phenocycler, Phenoimager HT), and 10x Genomics (Visium, Chromium). - Participate in monthly lab animal pathology seminars, research meetings, and scientific publications. *BASIC QUALIFICATIONS* Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college/university or equivalent degree. First of all - this is NOT an opportunistic grab for visitors to Noah's Slidebox (I'll bet you didn't know that the JPC also puts together Noah's Slidebox with some of our very close Foundation friends.) (We have always envisioned Noah's Slidebox to be complementary to VSPO/WSC - we didn't really think it would be the only free slide collection available - and hopefully that is very temporary.) So when you use Noah's Slidebox ( https://davisthompsonfoundation.org/available-slide-conferences/) - you aren't being disloyal - it's still us putting all sorts of free stuff out there (and thank you for everything you do scanning and organizing all these slides, Kelsey Fiddes!) From the JPC - VSPO/WSC wholeslide server crashed this weekend

From the JPC - The company that provides data storage, service and backup for the JPC's VSPO and WSC reported a catastrophic server failure this weekend, which has taken the server offline. The company has sent the disk array to a data recovery service to see how much if, any, of the 2900+ wholeslides are recoverable. While the text for each entity is still available, the wholeslides are not. We have been given an estimate of 3-5 business days to find out how much, if any can be recovered. We are understand how important these slides are to training programs all over the world. We will update the timeline to restore these slides as we have additional information. Back by popular demand, the Davis-Thompson Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s *Northeastern Veterinary Pathology Conference (NEVPC)*! NEVPC will again be held *in person *at the *Smithsonian National Zoological and Conservation Biology Institute* (National Zoo) in Washington, DC on *Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, 2024*.
