This position will support necropsy (domestic animal, exotic and wildlife), field necropsy, and surgical biopsy duty in the DSU. The position requires board-certification (ACVP or ECVP) and eligibility for licensure by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA). The ability to multitask, to deal with periods of high volume and stress, and to provide a high level of client service. The Specialist, Anatomic Pathology must have the ability to work independently, but must also work effectively with faculty, other diagnostic professionals and DSU staff. They must provide day-to-day supervisory direction for the necropsy and Histology technical staff relating to their diagnostic cases. Further, they must have excellent oral and written communication skills and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and community veterinarians. The position requires a high degree of decision making, using independent judgment within the framework of the policies of the University and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and within the expectations of an expert diagnostician and professional service. This position is predominantly located at Spy Hill Campus; however, travel to the Foothills Campus may be required. Work is of varying complexity, with peak periods and short timelines for completion. This position works 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but on occasion, there may be the need to work outside of regular hours. *Primary Purpose of the Position:*(Key purpose, functions, roles): This position is responsible for providing accurate and timely delivery of anatomic pathology services to the University of Calgary community, Distributed Veterinary Learning Community (DVLC) practices, and the broader veterinary community. Diagnostic duty includes interpretation of necropsy, field necropsy and surgical submissions, interpretation of ancillary tests, report preparation and communication of results to veterinarians and other stakeholders. This position will further involve promotion of the diagnostic services to internal and external stakeholders. There is no formal teaching duties associated with the position. *Qualifications/Expertise Required*: Must be recognized as a specialist by the ABVMA. This includes completion of a DVM degree, completion of advanced anatomic pathology training (residency program) and ACVP board certification or eligibility. Licensure with the ABVMA. Significant practical experience in diagnostic anatomic pathology spanning all animal species is required. Expertise in wildlife, exotic and production animal pathology is an asset. Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume and diverse caseload and to complete reports in required turnaround times. Ability to provide leadership and direction to support staff while on diagnostic duty including a minimum of 2 necropsy technicians and 2 histotechnologists. Thorough understanding of bio-safety / bio-containment / bio-security/ WHIMS regulations. Ability to assess, plan, coordinate and work under the direction of Senior Management. Highly developed organizational and personal skills. Superior interpersonal, communication (written and oral) and collaboration skills. Must be flexible and team orientated. Knowledge of policies of the University of Calgary and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine considered an asset. Must demonstrate professionalism, discretion, courtesy, and respect in all interactions. *Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties:* (Results and outcomes expected when roles are carried out successfully, with supporting details on how results are accomplished): Collaborate with DSU leadership to maintain and improve service quality, turnaround times, and client satisfaction. Communicate diagnostic findings clearly and professionally to veterinarians and stakeholders. Ensure compliance with biosafety, biosecurity, and occupational health and safety standards. Support the DSU's operational goals, including adherence to budget, billing, and reporting systems. Contribute to the development of telepathology services to support rural Alberta. Work within the budget for the Anatomic Pathology services and the DSU. This includes working within established charges for services, record keeping systems, and billing systems. Contribute to the Hazard Assessment process should a near miss or incident occur and contribute to corrective actions. Establish effective working relationships with the University, DVLC and greater veterinary community regarding the services, ensuring that the expectations for service delivery are clearly communicated. Consults with management on program requirements and makes recommendations to ensure adequate infrastructure and personnel support and regarding potential improvements to processes or service delivery. Must establish effective working relationships with all stakeholders and mitigate/negotiate issues through effective problem-solving methods. Paul K. Hildebrandt - 1933 - 2025

Paul K. Hildebrandt, 91, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on August 26, 2025, at Homewood at Crumland Farms. Born November 18, 1933, in Lamar, Colorado, Paul was the son of Knud and Olga (Hansen) Hildebrandt. He grew up a proud “green-sleeved farm boy,” driving tractors, baling hay, and cultivating the strong work ethic and warm sense of humor that carried him through life. He met the love of his life, Jane, in high school. Their first date - a Friday night football dance that also happened to be Paul’s 16th birthday - sparked a loving partnership that lasted more than 70 years. The two married in 1953 while both were students at Colorado A&M, now Colorado State University. After earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, Paul served in the U.S. Army, where he was first stationed at Ft. Detrick in Frederick. He also served three years at NAMRU-3, an infectious disease research unit in Cairo, Egypt. Working in Egypt, Paul quickly picked up Arabic phrases that he used often and will live forever in family lore, most famously telling his kids to “use your mukh,” translation: use your brain! During his Army career, Paul served as Director of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He retired from the Army as a full colonel in 1981. Following his military career, Paul launched his own research company, PATHCO, and often commuted to Research Triangle in North Carolina by piloting his own plane. Paul’s life was never all work. He loved his collection of antique tractors, occasionally driving his Oliver 70 to Brook Hill United Methodist Church on sunny Sunday mornings. At Brook Hill he sang in the Alpha choir and played several seasons with the church softball team. Later, after surviving prostate cancer in 1995, Paul rediscovered fitness and made great friends at the Frederick YMCA. He became a daily swimmer and even represented Maryland in the Senior Olympics. In retirement, Paul and Jane enjoyed “snow birding” - splitting time between summers in Frederick and winters in The Villages, Florida, where Paul polished his golf game, swapped stories with the Colorado and Scandinavian Clubs, and enjoyed nightly dancing in the town square. Back home in Maryland, he rarely missed a Friday night at Il Forno with his kids and their families. In 2019, Paul and Jane moved to Homewood at Crumland Farms, where he made friends with everyone he met -- residents and staff alike. Paul never lost his Danish pride, his sense of humor, or his favorite sayings. When surprised you'd hear, “Great balls of fire!” On a really good day he'd be “feeling like a June bride.” And when he raised a glass in toast he’d exclaim “Skåll!” the Danish “Cheers!” In addition to his loving wife Jane, Paul is survived by four children: John Hildebrandt (Kathryn) of Damascus, Kristie McKillip of Frederick, Jerry Hildebrandt (Lisa) of New Market, and Lori Barrick (Matthew) of Frederick; nine grandchildren: Jennifer Zoll (Matt), Robert Hildebrandt (Anna), Jacob McKillip, Erik McKillip, Stephanie Riley (Dustin), Hansen Barrick, Hayden Barrick (Katie), Hannah Hildebrandt (Ryan Koenig), and Ryan Barrick; nine great-grandchildren: Angell, Camden, Lexi, Liam, Amy Rose, Harrison, Jude, Florence, and Bennett Paul; he will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Erik Hildebrandt, and sister, Anita (Hildebrandt) Messimer. Special thanks to the compassionate Homewood nursing staff, BridgingLife hospice care, and Visiting Angels. Paul’s motto was, “Work hard, do the right thing, and good things will happen,” so, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on September 11, 2025, at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Dear colleagues, Welcome to the September issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation with the compliments of our brilliant managing editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. Thank you Jeann and Javier. As always, these pages are full of great training opportunities all over the world for trainees and pathologists, face to face and virtual, and in several languages. And speaking of training opportunities, keep in mind that there are still seats available for our great Foundations of Pathology. This is a must for all trainees starting their program and for pathologists that want to keep up to date with new developments in descriptive pathology. The course includes a three full-day virtual component (September 12-14, 8:00-5:00 CDT Friday- unday), and a full-day in-person component in New Orleans during the annual ACVP meeting (October 29, 8:00-5:00 pm). The use of Noah's Slidebox (and soon Noah's Arkive) is still FREE, but you will need to be logged into your free Foundation account. Over the last few months, the Foundation's site has been slowed to a crawl by AI bots and scrapers download the terabytes of information in Noah's Slidebox and Noah's Arkive (NS and NA for those "in the know"). In order to combat this new scourge, we are migrating our two most data-heavy resources behind your login. These resources are still free to use, but you must be logged into your account. Noah's Slidebox is already moved, and we are currently working on Noah's Arkive. For those of you who may have forgotten how to log into your account - simply click on the "Log In" text at the top of the front page at davisthompsonfoundation.org. This is a combined residency/graduate program in veterinary anatomic pathology. The ideal candidate is interested in pursuing a career in industry, academia, or diagnostics and will be qualified for this role by attaining board certification in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a graduate degree. The ideal candidate is curious about pathology and motivated to better explain pathogenesis beyond our current understanding. The Department of Veterinary Pathology is housed in Patterson Hall near the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Our department includes seven ACVP board-certified anatomic pathologist, three board-certified clinical pathologists, and two board-certified veterinary parasitologists. The Department of Veterinary Pathology has its own fully operational histopathology laboratory, necropsy floor, clinical pathology laboratory and parasitology service. Our department sees all diagnostic necropsies and biopsies from the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and Prairie Meadows Racetrack. We also have a busy diagnostic biopsy service that serves practitioners from all over Iowa and surrounding states. The goals of the program are to guide trainees to 1) Become an independent diagnostic pathologist 2) Become an independent scientific investigator, and 3) Gain experience in academic didactic and clinical teaching. Working toward these goals will help the candidate prepare for ACVP board certification and the ability to be a day-one ready pathologist in academia, research & industry, or diagnostic pathology service. Expected effort during the program will be towards graduate research, didactic and clinical teaching, and diagnostic service. Residency Training Position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology - Louisiana State University The Department of Pathobiological Sciences and the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU Vet Med) has residency training positions available for a 3-year anatomic pathology residency program. The start date is July 1st, 2026. The individuals will join 4 other anatomic pathology residents and six anatomic pathologists. Anatomic pathology residents are trained in the recognition and interpretation of gross and histological lesions, molecular diagnostics, and integration of pathological and ancillary laboratory testing necessary for disease diagnosis. The program is designed to meet the training requirements to sit for the certification examination by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Training throughout the residency program is based on necropsy and surgical pathology submissions through the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) with wide exposure to companion, agricultural, wildlife, and zoo animals. In addition to engaging in the biopsy and necropsy case workup, resident learning is supplemented by core courses and specialty rounds, and residents are expected to participate in teaching, attend departmental seminars, participate in national and regional meetings presenting their findings, and prepare peer-reviewed publications during their training. Opportunities exist for post-residency graduate research training within the MS or PhD programs at the Department of Pathobiological Sciences after completion of the residency. Areas of active research within the department and school include cellular and molecular biology, infectious diseases, vector-borne diseases, and biology of cancer. Applicants should indicate in their application whether they also intend to pursue a graduate degree and, if so, what their potential general areas of research interest are. *Residency Training in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology.* The Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, has two positions for residency training in veterinary anatomic pathology beginning July 2026. The residency program consists of three years of training, based on diagnostic casework from the UF Veterinary Hospitals and the private sector, as well as numerous training seminars. Training is currently provided by ten board-certified faculty pathologists with a variety of diagnostic and research interests including dermatopathology, aquatics/exotics/wildlife/zoo pathology, forensic pathology, oncologic pathology, infectious diseases, and molecular pathology. Residency training includes in-depth instruction on the diseases of horses, dogs, cats, aquatic/zoo/wildlife/non-domestic species, and food animals. The focus is on preparing residents to pass the American College of Veterinary Pathologists’ certification examinations and for a career in veterinary pathology. The current starting salary is $56,000. A supplemental yearly stipend is provided for professional development, and additional funding may be available for research projects and travel on a competitively-selected basis. Residents are offered a competitive benefits package that includes employer paid medical, dental, vision, life, accidental death & dismemberment, disability, and employee paid options for legal and additional optional life insurance. Thank you Javier and Jeann! I start this message with a heavy heart by announcing the passing of our colleague and Friend, Dr Patricia (Patty) Gaffney. Patty was a graduate of UCDavis, where she also did her residency, an ACVP Board Certified pathologist and a member of the faculty of discussants of the DTF. She had an impactful career at the San Diego Zoo, where she was, until very recently, Director of Disease Investigations. See below the obituary shared with us by Dr Hendrik Nollens. On a brighter note, please join me in congratulating Dr. Rafaela De Negri for her recent appointment as Vice-President of Organizational Operations of the DTF. Congratulations Rafa! We are very thankful to Dr. Joshua Webster, Editor-in-Chief of Veterinary Pathology, who has provided an excellent article on Scientific Writing for our Expert's corner. Thank you Josh! Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Foundations of Pathology: register now!

We are so proud to announce the second installment of this annual course, Foundations of Pathology. This course, which we highly recommend for first-year residents, will be similar in some ways to the previous Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course but will be aimed at those just beginning their journey. Rather than focusing on mock tests, we want to help you build a strong foundation by sharing with you our accumulated knowledge about how to evaluate, interpret, and describe gross, microscopic, and ultrastructural lesions, plus how to properly interpret IHC, ISH, and molecular testing. We will have group discussions about how to structure study during your residency, available resources, and networking. We believe this course will create a strong base of foundational knowledge on which you can build, no matter what kind of training program you are in. The course will include a three full-day virtual component (September 12-14, 8:00-5:00 CDT Friday-Sunday), and a full-day in-person component during the annual ACVP meeting (October 29, 8:00-5:00 CST). Registration fees are the same for virtual-only and virtual + in-person, but tickets for the in-person component are limited to the first 40 registrants due to venue space limitations, and we already have some spaces reserved for last year's registrants who couldn't make the meeting in Seattle. Register early! Remember, member pricing is for those with current paid individual, university, or corporate memberships. Don't know if you're an institutional member? Ask your residency coordinator first to avoid the need for extra work on our end processing refunds. This year the in-person component will be held on Wednesday immediately after the ACVP meeting off-site at Tulane Medical School. Dear colleagues I am proud to present to you the July issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation, prepared, as always, by our outstanding Managing Editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. Thank you, Jeann and Javier. If you are attending the annual meeting of ACVP in New Orleans this fall, please take advantage of the myriad opportunities offered by the Foundation and the College. On the Foundation side, these include the pre-meeting seminar on Pathology of the Nervous System, the in-person component of the Foundations of Pathology Course, the Latin Comparative Pathology Group session, the Foundation's Award Ceremony and the Board of Directors meeting. This, on top of the long list of scientific activities offered by the College during this unique and vibrant 3-day meeting. The Foundation is proud of the great working relationship we have with the ACVP, as we each fulfill our shared mission to educate trainees and enrich the veterinary pathology learning community. This relationship has benefited countless trainees and pathologists in the past, and we look forward to many more years of collaboration. And speaking of training opportunities, please peruse these pages and the website of the Foundation to find a large number of training opportunities, many of which are happening very soon. Just to mention a few, consider the Just-in-time mock exams (July; on-line), Foundations of Pathology, the Pre-meeting workshops at the Annual Meetings of the ACVP (New Orleans), American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (Aurora, Colorado) and European College of Veterinary Pathologists (August; Turin), various day seminars, our regular Histology rounds and many free on-line seminars in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The Davis-Thomson Foundation invites you to submit digital gross, microscopic, or ultrastructural images depicting a lesion, to be featured on the front page of the monthly newsletter. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Submission information: · Submission deadline: submit anytime; all submissions roll over to be considered for future covers if we have already selected an image for the upcoming newsletter. · *Send your image by e-mail to: * o Dr. Kate Watson and Dr. Donald McGavin: images(a)davisthompsonfoundation.org Figure Requirements (see examples below): · Do not exceed the maximum file size of 5 MB. · Acceptable formats are TIFF and JPEG. o *Minimum acceptable resolution is 300 pixels/inch* (120 pixels/cm) for half-tones (i.e., photographs, histology images). § When you are saving a file such as a TIFF from any package such as Photoshop, you are given the option of compressing the file. LZW compression will speed up the upload and download times and will not affect your image in a negative way. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me? The Saturday wet lab is limited to 20 participants, with preference given to pathologists and pathology residents.
