Dear colleagues I am proud to present to you the July issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation, prepared, as always, by our outstanding Managing Editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. Thank you, Jeann and Javier. If you are attending the annual meeting of ACVP in New Orleans this fall, please take advantage of the myriad opportunities offered by the Foundation and the College. On the Foundation side, these include the pre-meeting seminar on Pathology of the Nervous System, the in-person component of the Foundations of Pathology Course, the Latin Comparative Pathology Group session, the Foundation's Award Ceremony and the Board of Directors meeting. This, on top of the long list of scientific activities offered by the College during this unique and vibrant 3-day meeting. The Foundation is proud of the great working relationship we have with the ACVP, as we each fulfill our shared mission to educate trainees and enrich the veterinary pathology learning community. This relationship has benefited countless trainees and pathologists in the past, and we look forward to many more years of collaboration. And speaking of training opportunities, please peruse these pages and the website of the Foundation to find a large number of training opportunities, many of which are happening very soon. Just to mention a few, consider the Just-in-time mock exams (July; on-line), Foundations of Pathology, the Pre-meeting workshops at the Annual Meetings of the ACVP (New Orleans), American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (Aurora, Colorado) and European College of Veterinary Pathologists (August; Turin), various day seminars, our regular Histology rounds and many free on-line seminars in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Submission information: · Submission deadline: submit anytime; all submissions roll over to be considered for future covers if we have already selected an image for the upcoming newsletter. · *Send your image by e-mail to: * o Dr. Kate Watson and Dr. Donald McGavin: images(a)davisthompsonfoundation.org Figure Requirements (see examples below): · Do not exceed the maximum file size of 5 MB. · Acceptable formats are TIFF and JPEG. o *Minimum acceptable resolution is 300 pixels/inch* (120 pixels/cm) for half-tones (i.e., photographs, histology images). § When you are saving a file such as a TIFF from any package such as Photoshop, you are given the option of compressing the file. Best regards Paco Uzal A few wet lab spots have been reopened. 2025 DTF Racehorse Necropsy Workshop, September 18th to 20th Join us in beautiful Lexington, KY this September for the third annual Davis Thompson Foundation Racehorse Necropsy Workshop. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me? Thursday and Friday didactic sessions are open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory support staff. Something new this year will be a Latin Comparative Pathology Group (LCPG; the Latin American Division of the DTF) session at the annual meeting of AAVLD, which we hope will become a permanent feature of that meeting. This year, the session will be on screwworm, a disease that is moving north at a fast pace and threatens to enter the US soon. If you are attending the AAVLD meeting, join us for this inaugural great session. And of course, the traditional LCPG session at the annual meeting of ACVP has already been scheduled. participate in a research study on diagnostic challenges!

Hello Foundation members and friends. Dr. Giuseppe Giglia, an Italian board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologist and post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Perugia, Italy is conducting research on the systematic reporting and data analysis of pathology diagnostic findings and causes of death in animals in the context of their regional animal cancer registry. One of his research lines involves examining how diagnostic uncertainty and levels of diagnostic confidence affect reporting practices in veterinary diagnostic pathology. To better understand the challenges faced in this field, his lab has designed a short (10-minute) survey aimed at veterinary pathologists and residents. The survey explores the (patient, sample, and pathologist-related) factors that influence diagnostic confidence and uncertainty in our daily diagnostic practice. The collected data will be analyzed and insights gathered in a scientific publication intended for submission to Veterinary Pathology to share the results and insights of the survey with all the colleagues. These findings and insights on the variables influencing the diagnostic uncertainty in routine veterinary pathology diagnostic practice may help identify areas where further support to pathologists, or resources, or residency training initiatives could be implemented to reduce their impact on the diagnostic uncertainty. All data will be fully anonymized before the data analysis. The requirement to add an email address to send the form is solely to prevent duplicate entries (this will be deleted when checking the dataset for duplicates before analysis). This and other measures are in place to preserve the validity and integrity of the survey results. Additionally, while questions about society or college memberships may appear specific, they serve only to help us relate the sampled population (sample size) with a known denominator. This allows us to assess whether a representative sample has been reached or whether limitations should be kept in mind for the representativeness of the survey on some aspects. JPC VSPO/WSC guest access re-established

The guest access for the JPC VSPO/WSC server has been established. Clicking on a wholeslide will once again bring up the front page of the Aperio image server, and if you click on the Guest login button, you don't need a password. That being said, the chronic issue of the server freezing up has still not yet been identified. This summer, the JPC will be rebuilding the server (the current server will stay up during this period) to see if a total rebuild will correct the issues that have been plaguing the server since the "Big Crash of '24". The server currently is set to autoreboot daily at 0600, 1400, and 2000 hrs. daily. Utilization of the server during these times offers the greatest chance of the wholeslides working as prescribed. 2025 DTF Racehorse Necropsy Workshop, September 18th to 20th Join us in beautiful Lexington, KY this September for the third annual Davis Thompson Foundation Racehorse Necropsy Workshop. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me? Thursday and Friday didactic sessions are open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory support staff. Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Residency: Anatomic Pathology Post Graduate Residency - Schreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan Washington University *Location:* Glassboro, New Jersey Anatomic Pathology Post Graduate Residency. The Schrieber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) at Rowan University invites applications for one post-grad residency position in veterinary anatomic pathology that will begin July 1, 2025. The successful applicant will complete their diagnostic duty between the SSVM in Glassboro, NJ and the New Jersey Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory (NJ AHDL) in Ewing under the primary guidance of 2 Rowan University ACVP-board certified anatomic pathologists with supplemental guidance from 2 NJ AHDL anatomic pathologists and 2 SSVM ACVP board-certified clinical pathologists. Trainees will be exposed to a diverse diagnostic caseload that includes submissions from the SSVM teaching hospital, private clinics, livestock and backyard poultry, racehorses, and regional marine mammal agencies. Pathology residents will be eligible for ACVP board-certification upon completion of the program. SSVM is New Jersey’s first veterinary school with the inaugural DVM class starting in Fall 2025. A 167k square foot building housing a full-service small animal teaching hospital, an academic facility with lab and classroom space, as well as research laboratory space is slated to open in August 2025. Services provided will include primary care, emergency, anesthesia, cardiology, critical care, dermatology, dentistry, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, clinical pathology, anatomic pathology, and surgery. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and be eligible for a New Jersey veterinary license. The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is seeking applications for a diagnostic veterinary anatomic pathologist at Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory in Auburn, Alabama. Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory is the central reference laboratory of the state animal diagnostic laboratory system that includes 3 ACVP board certified pathologists, 8 veterinary diagnosticians with multiple specialties, one avian trainee, and branch laboratories in Boaz, Elba, and Hanceville. The Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory is AAVLD accredited and is a NALHN level 1 lab. Laboratories provide animal disease diagnostic and regulatory testing with robust availability of ancillary diagnostics. The laboratory is located on the campus of the Auburn University, with close partnership with the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, which includes 7 ACVP board certified pathologists, strong connections to the Davis-Thompson foundation, and a thriving residency program. Auburn is a fast-growing college town with an excellent public school system, diverse restaurants, and abundant recreational opportunities for individuals and families alike. Auburn has easy access to several larger cities including Atlanta and Birmingham and is approximately 1.5 hours away from the Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport with direct flights all over the US. Chewacla State Park is located within the city limits and Lake Martin, a large recreation lake, with abundant water activities and hiking trails is less than an hour drive. Within a day’s drive are numerous beautiful gulf coast beaches, clear Florida springs, small mountain towns, and quintessential southern cities including New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston. The focus of this position is contributing to the biopsy service, histopathology evaluations for branch/satellite laboratory cases, and performing necropsy and histopathology examinations for the necropsy service. The non-avian caseload will primarily include mammalian submissions and zoo and exotic cases with a focus on agriculture in the state and close connections with veterinarians, law enforcement, and humane societies in the surrounding area. The pathologist is responsible for conducting necropsy and histopathology evaluations, communicating with clients, interpreting test results, and participation in the laboratory Quality Management system. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. The Department of Veterinary Biosciences (VBS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), in conjunction with the James Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking applicants for a clinical-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Comparative/Laboratory Animal Pathology. *Position Overview* As a member of the Comparative Pathology & Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR), the comparative pathologist will provide pathology expertise and support for investigator-initiated research with an emphasis on preclinical toxicity/efficacy studies and the phenotypic characterization of genetically modified mice to researchers utilizing animal models. The CPDISR is committed to leveraging digital imaging and new analytical approaches to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms and accelerate drug discovery. Thus, expertise in and/or interest to develop expertise in new analytical approaches is highly desirable, and collaboration on research grants is encouraged. In addition to contributing to CPDISR activities, the successful candidate will be actively involved in training of veterinary students and veterinary pathology residents in the OSU-CVM combined pathology residency/Ph.D. program. The CPDISR ( https://cancer.osu.edu/for-cancer-researchers/resources-for-cancer-research…) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-recognized OSUCCC Shared Resource currently supported by two anatomic pathologists specialized in comparative/laboratory animal pathology/phenotyping. Additional CPDISR team members include a prosector, certified medical technologist, certified histotechnologists, and digital pathology team. The CPDISR provides necropsy support, hematologic and biochemical analyses, histochemical, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence services, and digital slide scanning on two scanning platforms. Near-future Shared Resource service plans include incorporation of quantitative image analysis software and consultation/support. *Performance Objectives* The position is predominantly research pathology service with an opportunity for collaborative research (approximately 70%), teaching (approximately 20%) and administrative service (approximately 10%). Duties will include: a) Providing diagnostic pathology service (including surgical biopsy and necropsy duty) for Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services (ViTALS) and histopathology service for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Animal Health Laboratory Services b) Teaching in the DVM professional program c) Training pathology residents, which includes teaching in graduate-level pathology courses and participating in histopathology rounds d) Engaging in independent or collaborative research Virginia Tech Animal Laboratory Services (ViTALS) is an AAVLD-accredited diagnostic laboratory whose clients include the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and veterinary clinics in the surrounding region. Evidence of a research and publication track record is encouraged, ideally in a research focus area of the college which includes: Infectious diseases, Inflammatory/regulatory disorders (including cancer), Translational/regenerative medicine, Epidemiology/disease Investigation.
