In addition to our two wonderful editors Stephanie Shrader and Javier Asin, this month we welcome Dr Jeann Leal, our colleague and long term visual artist, to the editorial team of the DTF newsletter. Welcome Jeann. Amongst the many training opportunities offered by the Foundation in October, we are particularly proud to announce our first hybrid seminar, which started yesterday and will conclude today in Galveston, Texas with a great turn out both in person and virtually. This first-time hybrid seminar will be followed soon (October 23) by the symposium on Pathology of transboundary diseases, during the annual meeting of the AAVLD, which will also be held in a hybrid format. Fellowship in Comparative and Genomic Pathology

The Laboratory of Comparative Pathology (LCP) of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medical College, Hospital for Special Surgery, and The Rockefeller University is accepting applications for a 15-month postdoctoral fellowship in comparative and genomic pathology for veterinary pathology trainees seeking to advance their knowledge in these disciplines. The fellow takes advantage of a large and diverse laboratory animal caseload and state-of-the-art facilities housed within the LCP, providing capacity for necropsy, histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, whole slide digital image analysis, hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, and serology. Other core facilities housed within the institutions provide access to in vivo imaging, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and laser capture microdissection equipment and expertise. Responsibilities include performing gross pathologic and histopathologic examinations of a variety of laboratory animal species (mice, rats, hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, non-human primates, fish, amphibians), interpreting findings, preparing reports, and communicating with clinical veterinarians and research personnel. Scientific collaborations and publications are encouraged. Supervision by 3 board-certified pathologists (ACVP and/or ECVP) is provided. The fellow participates in didactic activities held jointly with the Tri-Institutional Training Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine & Science, including Histopathology and Gross Pathology Rounds, Clinical and Pathology Conference, Laboratory Animal Medicine Seminar Series, and Journal Club. Applicants must possess a DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution and have completed at least 2 years of residency anatomic pathology training. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed 3 year of anatomic pathology training. Salary is based on the NIH post-doctoral scale and commensurate with experience. Department of Comparative Pathobiology* *Tufts University: Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine:* *Location* North Grafton, MA *Open Date* September 30, 2021 *Description* The Department of Comparative Pathobiology in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking highly motivated diagnostic anatomic pathology faculty to support our diagnostic pathology and teaching missions. We seek applicants who are successful educators with the ability and desire to mentor residents and DVM students in the art of the necropsy, exhibit strong diagnostic skills, have the ability to interpret samples from a variety of species, and can work closely with and support the clinicians in our hospitals and clinics. Positions may be at the rank of assistant, associate, or professor in the clinical track. The veterinary diagnostic laboratory manages a robust anatomic pathology caseload consisting of primarily dogs, cats, exotics and zoologic species, lesser numbers of horses, alpacas, and small ruminants originating primarily from our academic hospitals and clinics. Our service also has access to wild animals through our wildlife clinic. The diagnostic anatomic pathology laboratory processes approximately 2,300 biopsies and 550 necropsies per year. With cases coming from both primary and tertiary care facilities, we see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching resources and supporting research and scholarly activity. Teaching opportunities occur across the four years of the DVM program and includes small group, classroom, clinical skills, and fourth year diagnostic rotations. The service supports 3 anatomic pathology residents, and faculty are expected to assist in the supervision and training of our residents. Clinical track faculty members are expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline. For individuals with the appropriate interests and expertise, opportunities for engagement in independent and collaborative research are available. Collaboration with clinicians to support clinic research is expected as part of the diagnostic service responsibilities. *Duties and Responsibilities:* - Time devoted to diagnostic responsibilities would be expected to range from 25 – 35 weeks, depending on teaching and research responsibilities. Dr. George Migaki, 1917-2021

It is with great regret that I announce the passing of Dr. George Migaki, formerly of the Registry of Veterinary Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. George was a pioneer in the comparative pathology of zoo and wildlife animals (and one of the first veterinary pathologists to take an interest in the pathology of marine mammals) as well as laboratory animals. He was the author of innumerable papers of animal models in conjunction with the Journal of Comparative Pathology and many other journals. A cursory search of "Migaki G veterinary" in either Pubmed or Google will quickly document his massive contributions to our field. I met George as a first-day resident and we struck up an fast friendship based on our combined intense curiosity for all things pathological.Every day, for the first two weeks of my residency, George would invite me into his office to show my a slide and ask me for my diagnosis. I would give my best shot (which wasn't much) and he would clap and exclaim with glee, "It's just autolysis!" I fell for that every day for two weeks until I myself one day said "Autolysis?" Then the real teaching began, and he was an amazing instructor, mentor, and colleague. George was a veteran of WWII - an American soldier of Japanese descent (which requires no more explanation) - and we would talk every year on Veteran's Day. He was incredibly kind, a true gentleman, and one of the unsung heroes (which was fine with him) of our field. Godspeed my friend.... The Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine seeks applications a *Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist* for a clinical-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Diagnostic Pathologist Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory | Auburn, Alabama The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is seeking applications for a veterinary anatomic pathologist at Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory. The Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory is the central reference laboratory for the animal diagnostic laboratory system that includes branch laboratories in Boaz, Elba, and Hanceville, Alabama. Laboratories provide animal disease diagnostic and regulatory testing for submitting veterinarians and private owners. The laboratory is located on the campus of Auburn University, with close partnership with the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Job Responsibilities The focus of this position is contributing to the biopsy service, histopathology evaluations for branch/satellite laboratory cases, and performing necropsy and histopathology examinations for the necropsy service. The non-avian caseload will primarily include mammalian submissions and zoo and exotic cases. There is opportunity to participate in the avian diagnostic service. The pathologist is responsible for conducting necropsy and histopathology evaluations, communicating with clients orally and in writing, interpreting test results, contributing to the weekend and holiday necropsy service by rotating with other pathologists, staff training and supervision, and participation in the laboratory Quality Management system. Requirements Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA-recognized school or college of veterinary medicine, and U.S. citizenship status. Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) is preferred, as is board eligibility for phase II of the ACVP examination. Salary Starting salary will be commensurate with professional credentials, experience, and an approved level of entry for classification within the State Personnel system. Benefits include low-cost single coverage for health/vision/dental insurance, with optional family health coverage, thirteen paid holidays per year, thirteen annual leave and sick days each per year, flexible employee benefit plans, and retirement plans with the Retirement Systems of Alabama, and optional deferred compensation plans. Assistant/Associate Professor - Anatomic Veterinary Pathologist Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Colorado State University Fort Collins, CO 80523 Position Description The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, is seeking an anatomic veterinary pathologist for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position involves a 50% commitment to service activities of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and a 25% commitment to teaching and 25% commitment to research activities (negotiable) in the Department. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory. Service responsibilities are shared among nine pathologists from the Department. The Diagnostic Laboratory receives animals and surgical specimens from veterinary practitioners, animal owners, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. It also functions as a training site for veterinary students and pathology residents. Teaching commitments include practicum teaching during the necropsy laboratory rotations for veterinary students and pathology residents and hospital surgical biopsy rotations for pathology residents and graduate students. Didactic classroom teaching in the undergraduate, graduate and/or professional veterinary medicine curricula of the department also is part of the commitment. Involvement in a collaborative research program is an expectation. Preference will be given to persons with interests and expertise to collaborate with the college’s established Programs of Research and Scholarly Excellence (PRSE). These are the Infectious Disease Research and Response Network, Cancer Biology & Comparative Oncology, the Animal Reproduction & Biotechnology Laboratory, the Musculoskeletal Research Program, and the Molecular, Cellular, & Integrative Neurosciences Program. Qualifications Qualifications for this position include a DVM degree or equivalent and advanced training in anatomic pathology. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, an interest in applied pathology, pathology training, and research experience in collaborative investigations. PhD in a discipline related to biomedical sciences, American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) board certification is preferred although board eligible candidates will be considered. Dear Davis-Thompson Foundation members and supporters: As most or all of you know, the Foundation realizes its mission with a team of dedicated and talented volunteers who help us do what we do while also balancing an already-busy life filled with demanding career, family, and outside interests. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization, but every once in a while a job comes along that is so big, complex, time-consuming, and outside our skill set that we need to bring in professionals. Assistant/Associate Professor of Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Faculty Jobs at UF (ufl.edu) <https://facultyjobs.hr.ufl.edu/posting/81213> JOB DESCRIPTION The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for two faculty members to join our Anatomic Pathology service as a full time, tenure track or clinical track faculty assistant/associate professors in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The individuals will participate in and support the teaching and service activities of the Anatomic Pathology Service in the UF Veterinary Hospitals and will be expected to develop and maintain a productive research program and/or participate in collaborative research, depending on the track. Teaching responsibilities will involve didactic and clinical training of professional students and residents, and opportunities also exist for graduate student mentorship and education. The UF College of Veterinary Medicine is the ninth ranked College of Veterinary Medicine in the US and is the only one that is part of a top 10 public research university (UF is ranked #6 nationally). The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on campus in close proximity to the College of Medicine and numerous other Health Sciences units that provide ample opportunities for translational research and collaboration. The Veterinary Anatomic Pathology service is composed of ten faculty, six residents, three necropsy staff members and six histology staff members. Opportunities also exist to make contributions in established veterinary specialty services such as aquatic pathology, forensic pathology, ocular pathology and dermatopathology, or to form additional specialty areas. The Anatomic Pathology residency is a three-year program structured to prepare trainees for possible academic and diagnostic careers. The University of Florida Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories are comprised of dedicated individuals who strive for excellence in diagnostics to improve animal and human health. We are currently in the accreditation process of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians; experience in AAVLD-accredited laboratories is helpful. The successful candidates must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. The university has a student body of over 49,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, including over 14,500 minority students, and 6,000 international students. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications for this position is a DVM or equivalent degree from an approved institution and completion of a veterinary anatomic pathology residency training program or equivalent training. Experience in diagnostic biopsy and necropsy, and the ability to independently sign out cases, is required. An MS and/or PhD is also required for a tenure track candidate prior to starting the position.
