Hot on the heels of our wildly successful Gen Path Review Course, comes the second installment - the Gross Path Review Course from 17-21 May. FIVE WHOLE DAYS of nothing but gross pathology.... As this course begins its evolution over the next few years, the pathology faculty of The Ohio State University (and a few visitors), will begin the transition from species-based instruction (the modus operandi of this course for over 40 years), to an all systems-based approach. This year, domestic species get a systems-based review and the non-traditional (laboratory and zoo/wildlife/exotic) will be reviewed on a species-based approach. As we did with Gen Path - all of the didactic lectures will be recorded and available for a period of 3 weeks afterwards, (for a reduced price), but only attendees to the live version can participate in realtime discussions, grill the instructors with their questions, and participate in the mock exam and grading discussion at the end of the course. And of course, participants in the live event have access to rebroadcast materials as well. Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian at Purdue University The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships (EVPRP) at Purdue University seeks a motivated, resourceful, and visionary individual to join our senior leadership team as the new Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian. The Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian is charged with ensuing outstanding animal care and welfare in all of the university’s research and teaching programs and facilitating optimal relationships among affiliated entities at Purdue. The successful candidate reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships, is a member of the EVPRP’s senior research leadership team, and would hold a clinical faculty appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Purdue’s AAALAC-accredited animal facilities and animal care program is extensive and comprehensive. It encompasses 11 sites, including locations on campus and throughout Indiana, with approximately 75 buildings that house animals. The total space devoted to animal housing is approximately 700,000 square feet and 2,000 acres of pasture. The average daily animal census of laboratory and agricultural animals maintained in Purdue facilities, including on- and off-campus, totals more than 56,000. Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will: ● Lead the university’s animal care program. ● Oversee the veterinary care and husbandry for a variety of vertebrate animal species (including fish, rodents, dogs, cats, large ruminants, horses, and swine) at all Purdue-associated facilities. ● Develop, update and implement processes, policies and standard operation procedures for animal facility functions and animal care as needed to ensure animal care meets or exceeds all federal animal welfare regulations and guidelines, Purdue policies, and accreditation standards. ● Ensure that Purdue maintains full accreditation with AAALAC. ● Serve as a member of Purdue's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. ● Coordinate and optimize space availability/allocation, and equipment requirements based on research staff needs across Purdue. ● Monitor accounting for animal facilities ensuring that accurate census data and time logs are maintained by staff. Forecast budget for equipment and supply needs, including new equipment purchases, and system/facility expansions and upgrades, and take steps to keep facilities within budget. ● Supervise all laboratory animal veterinarians and the animal husbandry/facility assistant director. ● Ensure standard operating procedures and policies are fully communicated to staff, implemented and correctly followed. ● Evaluate and determine staffing requirements for the animal research program and the centralized animal care program. ● Develop and implement training programs for all animal care and research personnel. ● Manage staff performance through coaching and recommend personnel actions which include hiring, training, promotion, and discipline. Conduct performance reviews of direct reports and assist area supervisors as needed in their evaluation of assigned staff. ● As a clinical faculty member, contribute to the teaching of professional veterinary students and veterinary nursing students, and lead a laboratory animal residency training program in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Medicine and industrial partners. ● Have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research. *ANATOMIC PATHOLOGIST* The Arkansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory announces an opening for an Anatomic Pathologist. The lab is part of the Arkansas Livestock & Poultry Commission (ALPC), a division of the Arkansas Department of Agriculture. *Position Description* The Veterinary Pathologist conducts comprehensive histopathological examinations on all species of animals to diagnose disease, with a distinct emphasis on proximate causation. The caseload includes a wide variety of species including livestock, pets, poultry, wildlife, and exotic animals, but priority is placed on production animals. The incumbent is expected to contribute to general lab functions such as purchasing, safety, and quality management. Interaction with veterinarians and other professionals, animal owners, livestock producers, and animal disease regulatory officials is an integral part of this position. This position requires expertise in both individual and population medicine. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. *Requirements* Extensive knowledge of veterinary pathology is required. The applicant should also have broad knowledge of veterinary clinical pathology, microbiology, immunology, and toxicology as well as the ability to analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals. The applicant must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. *Minimum Qualifications* Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree and must have completed a three-year residency program in veterinary anatomic pathology at an AVMA-accredited institution. *Preferred Qualifications* The preferred candidate will bring a diagnostic perspective geared to efficient management of casework coupled with a strong emphasis on veterinary medical outcomes consistent with the mission of the Arkansas Department of Agriculture. *Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Director* Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is seeking a motivated, experienced anatomic pathologist to lead the development of Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL). The CVDL is being created from the current pathology service ( https://vetmed.tufts.edu/pathology-service/) This will include necropsy service, biopsy service, histopathology service, and the histology laboratory. We are establishing a comparative pathology core service to support research and are expanding into molecular diagnostics. The combined service units provide diagnostic testing for the clinicians and patients in the hospitals and clinics that make up the Cummings Veterinary Medical Center (https://vetmed.tufts.edu/) as well as in support of research activities for internal and external clients. The CVDL is supported by four anatomic pathologists, three clinical pathologists, three anatomic pathology residents, and 13 – 15 technical staff. The CVDL processes approximately 2,300 biopsies per year and 550 necropsies per year. The Clinical Pathology Laboratory performs hematology and clinical chemistry tests, urinalysis, fecal tests, cytology/fluid analysis, coagulation tests and a variety of other miscellaneous diagnostic tests serving over 50,000 clinical cases per year. Microbiology and most serology and endocrinology tests are sent to outside diagnostic laboratories. The services see a rich diversity of cases, both common and unique, providing ample teaching and research resources. The Director, reporting to the dean, will be responsible for all aspects of CVDL operations including strategic planning, and personnel, material, and fiscal management. The CVDL director will supervise staff and work with the clinical pathology faculty to oversee the activities of the clinical pathology service. The successful applicant will hold an academic appointment as professor/associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences (being re-named Department of Comparative Pathobiology). In addition to administrative responsibilities, the individual will contribute to diagnostic services, will participate in the DVM teaching, mentor anatomic pathology residents and contribute to the academic program of small and large animal house officers. In this issue of the newsletter, you will find a heartfelt welcome to our incoming President, Dr Jey Koehler. Jey will take over her role as president officially on March 2001, but she is, and has been for a while, already hard at work helping with countless activities in the Foundation. While COVID vaccination is starting everywhere, and we hope that we can go back to offering at least some of our teaching activities on a face-to-face mode, we are still planning and offering our regular virtual activities. Update on the Joint Pathology Center's VSPO and WSC virtual slides

Information from the Joint Pathology Center: The JPC IT department is working on replacing the old Flash-containing Aperio Imagescope with an upgraded product which is not based on Flash (Leica's Eslide). At this juncture, not all slides are back online, and it may be a long slog as each case at this point has to be updated manually in the database. We have identified the urinary system (currently the system being reviewing int he JPC curriculum) and this year's WSC as the priorities, and other systems and years of WSC will follow. In addition, the current configuration requires a username ("guest") to enter, but leave the password blank. Our IT staff is currently working in this issue and we will provide periodic updates. b

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our previous Board members, a member of our Faculty (speaking most recently only four years ago at the Gross Course at Kansas State University), and one of our greatest champions and most ardent supporters, Dr. Linda Kassebaum Johnson. As one who had the incredible luck to work with her early in our careers at the Armed Forces of Pathology, and then for many years later with the (then) C.L. Davis Foundation, she will forever live in my fondest memories. No one who knew her would forget so many things about her - the constant twinkle in her eye, her ever-present smile, or the way all conversation in the room would stop when she would speak in her very soft-spoken way,. Linda never failed to bring out our better angels, and I, like so many others I am sure, walked away from our every encounter resolved to be a better person. Her passing once again reveals the cruelty of the year, and the randomness of the universe, and we are all lessened by the lack of her company. LINDA JOHNSON 1958-2020 Linda Josephine Kassebaum Johnson, daughter of John Philip Kassebaum and former Kansas Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum, died early on Sunday morning from the effects of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy at her home in Buena Vista, Colorado. She was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1958 and was a graduate of Holton-Arms School, Kansas State University (B.S., D.V.M. *1979*, M.Sc.), and The Johns Hopkins University (1987-1990 post doc/residency and M.P.H.). While always a mother first to her children, Linda had a life-long passion for veterinary medicine and comparative pathology. After earning her D.V.M., Linda joined the Peace Corps as a veterinarian, and was stationed in Togo, where she met her former husband, Maurice Johnson. Her career included the position as Chief Pathologist for the Registry of Comparative Pathology (1991-1995) at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington DC where she wrote and edited many publications, facilitated research, and coordinated symposia related to comparative pathology. Her leadership managing the Registry contributed significantly to the elucidation of a number of animal models of human disease, ensured the preservation of pathologic material from many species of exotic animals, and resulted in the archival of invaluable reference material related to comparative medicine. From 1996-98 Linda was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Comparative Pathology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and from 2001 to 2003 at Yale University Division of Comparative Medicine. In 2003 she moved with her family to England where she was a consultant pathologist with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, England; returning to the US and the Yale University Division of Comparative Pathology in 2008. In 2009 Linda joined the Tri-Institutional Laboratory of Comparative Pathology (MSKCC/Cornell and Rockefeller), Center of Comparative Medicine and Pathology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan, NY. She was associated with the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and was Chief Anatomic Pathologist at the Weill Cornell Medical College. In this position, she was responsible for the Genetically Modified Animal Phenotyping Service where she provided phenotyping assessment for potential animal models of human disease and anatomic and clinical pathology assessment for safety and biologic studies required for FDA submission. In October 2011 Linda took a position in Australia as the Head of Anatomy and Pathology at the James Cook University Veterinary School in Townsville, Queensland, Australia where she oversaw the departments of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Comparative Anatomy, Histology and Pathology as well as supervised the services of the university diagnostic laboratory and provided guidance to research students. Here she identified and initiated scientific collaborations with university researchers. Her collaborations included work in C57BL/6 mice deficient in MyD8 developing *E. coli* peritonitis and investigation of gill aneurysms in reef-caught Damselfish related to chronically elevated water temperature. After returning to the States she accepted a position in 2015 developing the Comparative Medicine and Pathology group at the Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado-Denver. She retired from there when her disease progressed. She was a member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, American Veterinary Medical Association, Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and was on the Board of Directors of the C.L. Davis and S.W. Thompson DVM Foundation for Comparative and Veterinary Pathology. Over her career, Linda co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles, served on the editorial board for several journals, and received the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Recognition Award. She was highly respected by her colleagues in veterinary medicine and pathology for her professional skills, character and contributions. She was also a warm and compassionate friend., and few who knew her were not touched by the twinkle in her eye, her constant smile, and even fewer left her presence without an involuntary resolve to be a better person moving forward. Linda loved spending time with her family, but was never far from an animal, whether it be a dog, cat, or a tree kangaroo. She loved to watch the Palm Cockatoos by her office in Australia. Unsurprisingly, she was a volunteer at the Denver Zoo. She also enjoyed rooting for Arsenal F.C., bird watching, travel, and adventure (as long as an animal was involved). She is survived by her mother, two brothers, Bill and John, three children, Kristian, Margot, and Elsa, as well as a large family including step-siblings and cousins, nephews and nieces. A private funeral will be held in Kansas. In lieu of flowers, a memorial for Linda has been established at the Kansas State University Foundation to support veterinary students. Dear Colleagues As this unusual and difficult year draws to a close, I take this opportunity on behalf of the Davis-Thompson Foundation to thank you one and all for your outstanding efforts. What would normally have been a busy year of travel and face-to-face courses all over the world became a challenging but yet exciting time of interesting and plentiful virtual seminars. The upside of this is that we have been able to offer a wide and diverse range of instructional topics with great CE credits to many, many more people in more places around the world, than at any other time. The striking success of our online seminars is a direct result of the consistent hard work and generous donations of time and resources from all of our speakers, moderators, and our awesome webinar committee, along with all of our members who attended our seminars over countless hours. We couldn't have done it without your commitment and dedication. Last July, Black Voices in Pathology 1 proved to be compelling and emotional viewing, filled its 1000 seat limit, and became our most popular and one of our most talked about seminars. We hope this new feature will aid the deaf, hard of hearing and non-native English speakers to better understand what’s going on. This feature will be provided via Rev’s closed captioning service, a speech-to-text AI system that should improve the more we use and teach it our pathology terms. Close caption is optional and can be turned on or off via the CC icon in the bottom of the Zoom window. · *NEW CERTIFICATE* designs. In the new certificate a space is provided for you to fill out your state and license number. You should also note that our certificates are generated via an automated system that uses the name and email that you register to the webinar. Please be sure to register with your name exactly how you want it to appear on the certificate.
