Dear all Welcome to the December issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, put together by our great managing editors Stephanie Shrader and Javier Asin. Thank you! This issue includes an emotional farewell to Dr Vladislava Rac, who recently stepped down from her post as Treasurer of the Davis-Thompson Foundation after many years of dedicated hard work for the Foundation. You will also see that the Foundation's calendar for the first semester of 2021 is already full with an an amazing variety of educational activities for a most diverse audience, in several different languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish). We are also trying to make at least some of our seminars time-zone friendly for many countries around the world. All our educational offerings come at no cost or low cost and with great CE credits, and are also announced in social media (Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) where you can find details about our seminars and also watch most of our past-seminars. Thanks to Bruce and Paco for the kind words and to the Board for your confidence in me. I am honored to do this work and will give it my mind, heart, and spirit! In the almost mind-bogglingly complicated modern world in which we find ourselves, it can be a struggle to know what the right thing is to do and how to do it when it comes to helping others. Bureaucracy and internecine politics of various kinds can conspire to thwart our simple desire to give of ourselves to our fellow humans. For me, and I strongly suspect for all of you, the Foundation stands out in stark relief to this by being an organization with a refreshingly clear, straightforward, pure, and noble goal. It is incredible to see the many hours of dedication put in by brilliant, talented, and generous people toward this singular enterprise, with both the "rockstar" lecturing and the abundant behind-the-scenes work being equally critical to our mission. To be able to work with not just a handful but dozens of these extraordinary people is a joy and a humbling privilege. Together, we can and will continue to do the work of disseminating high-quality veterinary pathology teaching to every corner of the globe, expanding our reach every year. We have a new President too!

Please join me in welcoming *Dr Jey Koehler*, as the new *President* of the Davis Thompson Foundation. Jey is currently on sabbatical leave and she has agreed to take over as President starting on March 1st, 2021. Until then, Dr. Francisco Uzal will continue to carry on the activities of CEO and President. We are thrilled with Jey’s new appointment. She is a world-renowned pathologist, who has been a member of the faculty of discussants of the Foundation for many years and, most importantly, Jey is and has been for several years, the director of one of the Foundation’s most prestigious courses: the Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course. Under Jey’s leadership, the DVP course reached the outstanding standard it enjoys today. This year, because of COVID, Jey and her team transformed, in record time, the whole DVP course into a fully digital version, which was offered to trainees all over the world. Jey has the knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment, to take the Foundation to the next level. The Davis-Thompson Foundation has a new Tresurer!

Dear all It is an immense honor and privilege to announce that Bruce Williams has been unanimously elected to the position of Treasurer of the Davis/Thompson Foundation. Bruce has worked tirelessly for many years as the CEO of the Foundation and before as its president. During this time, he has been the driving force behind providing workshops, seminars and training courses in Veterinary Pathology, both locally and globally, travelling extensively himself and championing other pathologists of all ages, genders and races. His outstanding leadership and organizational skills have been fundamental in solidifying the Foundation’s reputation as the number one organization promoting the teaching of Veterinary Pathology in the world. Under his direction, the Foundation has gone from strength to strength with each passing year and, in these very difficult times, reminded stronger than ever. As the realities of COVID hit, Bruce was swift to recognize not only the necessity but also the great potential of online delivery and very quickly figured out the best way to get it done. We are now able to offer an enormous number of webinars and courses worldwide, and reach a substantially increased audience as a consequence of his efforts. If you know Bruce at all, you will know that he works unremittingly and is available for the Foundation 24/7. Pathologists young and old look to him as a model of what hard work, a good heart and a strong vision for the future can achieve. I am proud to be his friend and colleague and look forward to many years of collaboration to come. Rest assured that Bruce will be working just as hard and resolutely as your Treasurer, even though he may not be quite as visible as before, and we remain in very good hands. The Davis-Thompson Foundation has a new Chief Executive Officer!

It is my great pleasure to announce for the third time in its 47 year history, the Charles Louis Davis and Samuel Wesley Thompson Foundation has a new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Francisco (Paco) Uzal. A member of our Board of Directors for over fifteen years, Paco has risen through the ranks, being the architect of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group (LCPG, aka the Foundation’s Latin American Division), the first LCPG President, and ultimately, the Foundation’s first Vice-President for Latin American Affairs. His work, often self-funded, established Divisions in Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, and held courses in many others. Three years ago, he was elected President of the Foundation by the Foundation's Board, and has excelled in that job, overseeing the Foundation's courses all over the world, (which have ranged up to 50 in some years), as well as being the primary architect in the Foundation's response to the 2020 pandemic, expertly and quickly pivoting from in-person to virtual seminars, while most organizations were still trying to figure whether they would even be capable of having meetings. He has also served twice during that time as the President of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group, not only establishing it, but also establishing it as one of the best-regarded pathology educational organizations throughout Latin America. During his entire time as a member of the Foundation's board and its president, he has lectured for us around the world many times on topics ranging from diseases of horse and ruminants, gastrointestinal disease, and descriptive pathology, and is most assuredly one of our most popular speakers. Superlatives fail to do justice to Paco’s contributions to the field of veterinary pathology, and to the education of all those who practice it, especially those who are in the early stages of their career. It has been my great pleasure to work side by side with him in a shared vision of pathology education for everyone around the world, and it is my great honor to call him a friend. As a friend, I am posting a short bio below (to his great chagrin, as one of the most humble men I know) for those few pathologists around the world who have not had the good fortune to meet him. The position of Foundation CEO and the Chairman of its Board is one that is a career in the making, and a position that is a second career in itself. It calls for men and women of vision, and provides years of service to fulfill that singular individual's vision. Those of us who do it don't do it as a career box check, but because we are driven to improve global education in veterinary pathology, and to give back far more than we have been given, all the while allowing others to collect the credit and accolades. It is a job conducted largely off the stage And so, to the members and friends of the Foundation, I present your new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paco Uzal. ********** Francisco A. Uzal, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is a Professor of Diagnostic Pathology and Branch Chief of the San Bernardino Laboratory of the California Animal Health and Food Safety, UCDavis. He is a leading expert on clostridial diseases of animals with special emphasis in enteric diseases. Dr. Uzal has published ~ 250 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the senior author of the chapter on “Alimentary Diseases”, for the 6th edition of “Jubb, Kennedy and Palmer’s Pathology of Domestic Animals” (2015, Elsevier), and the first author of the recently published textbook on Clostridial diseases of animals (2016, Wiley and Blackwell). He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a member of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. Dr Uzal is an Associated Editor and Photo Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation and Anaerobe and member of the editorial board of several other journals. He has been the coordinator of the Post-mortem Program for the California Horse Racing Board for the past 12 years. He is currently the Vice-President of the Davis/Thompson Foundation and president-elect of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group. Over the past 15+ years he has mentored a large number of Latinamerican veterinarians and vet students visiting his laboratory in California and lectured in many countries of Latin America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. He received the 2016 Life Achievement Award from HENAA for his contributors to education in science and technology.

This Friday at 1200PM EDT, Dr. LaTasha Crawford, VMD, PhD, DACVP of The Crawford Lab at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine will discuss "Anatomic Correlates of Pain - Advances and Opportunities in Sensory Pathology". Despite widespread prevalence of pain in patients of every species, there are still major gaps in our ability to diagnose or treat pain and sensory dysfunction. Building on her multifaceted background as a veterinary pathologist and neuroscientist, Dr. Crawford will share the wondrous heterogeneity of the sensory system that sets the landscape for her own research in pain mechanisms. This includes key findings that have emerged from mechanistic studies of rodent models of pain as well as the persisting gaps in our knowledge of sensory neuron pathology. Save the Date for our first online General Pathology Review Course - Course Directors Patty Pesavento and Jose Vilches-Moure are cooking up something special for 2021. Attendees will have TWO options for 2021 - attend the live broadcasts, interact with the instructors, and participate in the panel discussions, or view lecture rebroadcasts for a limited period following the course. Both options come with course materials and RACE credits. Interactive participation in the live broadcast is strongly recommended for those taking the ACVP phase 1 certification examination, and seating is limited to 100 to ensure a beneficial experience, while the rebroadcasted lectures will be sufficient for those who are looking for general knowledge, a refresher, or for whom the time zone (Pacific Standard Time) poes an insurmountable problem.
