Faculty Position Announcement Diagnostic Laboratory Services Director The University of Tennessee invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment as Director of Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Services in the Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences (BDS) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) in Knoxville, Tennessee. This position is offered as a full-time, clinical- or tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending upon the applicant's qualifications. The UTCVM's diagnostic laboratory services provide broad expertise in anatomic pathology services (diagnostic biopsy and necropsy), bacteriology/mycology, clinical pathology, endocrinology, parasitology, pharmacology, and virology/immunology. Diagnostic laboratory services are supported by 20 faculty, 31 staff, and 6 residents. Collectively, the laboratories accession just over 61,000 samples annually (56% originate from within UTCVM and 44% from outside the UTCVM). In addition to supporting companion and farm animal health, the diagnostic laboratories also support the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA), Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), and east Tennessee agricultural producers. While the primary mission is diagnostic, research support is provided to UTCVM clinical departments and other entities on and off campus. Ongoing laboratory initiatives include ISO 17025 accreditation for selected units and tests, expansion of poultry testing services, and pending implementation of a new laboratory information system. Future goals include, but are not limited to, implementing centralized laboratory sample receiving, developing a comparative pathology service to support research, and working towards further accreditation and becoming a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) partner. The Director will hold a significant administrative appointment (anticipated 70% effort). Administrative duties include supervising, facilitating, and promoting diagnostic laboratory operations at a high level, including budgetary development and oversight, monitoring caseload data, and performing cost analyses; securing resources; maintaining infrastructure; performing stakeholder outreach; regular strategic planning; and change management. The Director will be expected to work closely with individual laboratory units, the UTCVM Dean, Associate Deans, Department Heads, Hospital Director, Referral Services Director, Business Office, Facilities Manager, UTIA Advancement, and Media Relations to supervise, set policy for, strategically plan for, and promote the diagnostic laboratory services. The Director will be a member of the Dean's Leadership Council and Veterinary Medical Center Hospital Board. In addition, the Director will represent the diagnostic laboratory services in interactions with TDA, TWRA, USDA, and other state and national veterinary and agricultural entities. The Director will also be expected to provide diagnostic service in one of the laboratory units (exact effort allocations and service duties to depend on the successful candidate's qualifications and interests) or contribute to the college's teaching mission. Qualified applicants must have: (1) excellent interpersonal and communication skills, (2) excellent leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to work with and mentor others in a collegial team atmosphere, (3) excellent administrative and management skills (4) a DVM degree (or equivalent) and/or PhD in a relevant scientific field, (5) at least 5 years' experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting, and (6) at least 3 years' supervisory or directing experience. Qualified applicants must also be committed to promoting a "culture of quality", as demonstrated by knowledge of laboratory quality management and prior engagement with laboratory quality procedures and initiatives. Board-certification in a veterinary laboratory or related discipline and entrepreneurial skills are preferred, as are demonstrated achievements in research, teaching, diagnostic service, and/or outreach. Each month a new image will take pride of place in the issue. Worried about image copyrights? Have no fear, the foundation does not claim copyright for any material published by us. Thank you, Jeann and Javier!! As the year progresses, we have more and more training opportunities to offer all over the world. Please peruse the pages of this newsletter and/or our website for details and registration. We know that many of our members are experiencing anxiety about the degree of uncertainty in the world right now. In times of turmoil, which have happened many times before in many countries all over the world, it is important to find our common humanity and stay true to our core values. The Foundation has always and will always remain true to its mission, which is to provide high-quality free and low-cost educational resources to support all trainees and pathologists all over the world. Sometimes when we feel unsure of the future, the best thing is to reach out and help someone else. Racehorse Necropsy Workshop 2025

2025 DTF Racehorse Necropsy Workshop, September 18th to 20th Join us in beautiful Lexington, KY this September for the third annual Davis Thompson Foundation Racehorse Necropsy Workshop. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me? Thursday and Friday didactic sessions are open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory support staff. The Saturday wet lab is limited to 20 participants, with preference given to pathologists and pathology residents. Registration is free thanks to the generous support of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. Registration details to follow.

Dear colleagues, Welcome to the February issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation newsletter, brilliantly prepared, as always, by our great managing editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. Thank you, Javier and Jeann! This issue is full of great training opportunities all over the world and in several languages. Amongst these, I want to highlight POLA, CLIIC (both in the US and in the UK), the Australian Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course, the Latin American Roadshow and our free virtual seminars in Spanish. New this year are the General Pathology Course in Spanish and the Spanish version of Introduction to Veterinary Histopathology Course. Stay tuned for the announcement of great virtual seminars in English throughout the year. Our YouTube videos are, as always, very popular. This month, in an effort to broaden the reach of our material, we are proud to announce the inclusion of Portuguese close captions to some of our YouTube videos. Registration for US and European CLIIC courses is OPEN!!

Registration is OPEN for both the US (held at University of Tennessee in Knoxville June 2-6) and the UK/European (held at Cambridge University June 30-July 4) CLIIC courses! This is the first time this wonderful IN-PERSON ONLY course has been held in Europe, so if you are in Europe/UK and studying for the ACVP or ECVP exams, you don't want to miss it. Although the faculty will be more limited in number, the material will not. Registration deadlines are one week prior to the start of the course. Don't miss out by procrastinating! This course is a systems-based review of veterinary pathology including current literature (past 5 years), relevant textbooks, as well as thousands of gross and microscopic images (histopathology and cytology). Attendees will receive over 600 boards-style multiple-choice questions, both knowledge (literature and textbook based) and image based. Questions are embedded in the presentations via live polling, but attendees will also receive the questions with references in the course materials. This course replaces the previously offered Gross Course and differs from it by the addition microscopic images (histopathology and cytology) and current literature review, to better reflect the current ACVP exam format. No matter which certifying exam you are taking, or even if you are already a working pathologist, this course is an excellent review of the most current state of knowledge about a wide variety of diseases and species. *Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist: Aquatic, Zoo and Wildlife Species* *International Zoo Veterinary Group Pathology* *Keighley, United Kingdom* International Zoo Veterinary Group (IZVG) was founded in 1976 and is the largest freelance zoo medicine practice in the world, working exclusively with non-domestic species. IZVG Pathology was established in 2003 and provides dedicated anatomic pathology services for the practice’s zoo, aquarium and wildlife conservation work. IZVG Pathology works from our own fully equipped post- mortem facility and histology laboratory situated within IZVG’s main building in Keighley, West Yorkshire. Keighley is on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and within easy travelling distance of the Lake District, and close to the larger cities of Leeds and Bradford. *The role: *Working alongside our existing principal veterinary pathologist, who will be your direct line manager, with two histology technicians, and supported by zoological medicine clinical specialists, you will take immediate responsibility for a caseload that comprises significant numbers of marine aquarium fish, non-domestic mammalian (particularly primate), avian, and lower vertebrate species, as well as invertebrates. Diagnostic histopathology will be a major part of your daily work, for IZVG’s own clients and for external clients including veterinary surgeons and referral laboratories. Necropsy examinations are also a frequent (typically daily) and irreplaceable feature of our work, occasionally necessitating travel off-site. A network of external collaborators enables us to source additional diagnostics as necessary. Opportunities exist for input into conservation projects in association with field biologists and vets. *The person:* MRCVS (or immediate eligibility) and a postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Pathology are essential (FRCPath, DipACVP, DipECVP or equivalent), as are robust diagnostic and communication skills. We are particularly seeking experience and enthusiasm for fish pathology, and experience with other non-domestic animal pathology would also be an advantage. Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Research Triangle Park, North Carolina Staff Scientist Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch (CMPB) The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Research Triangle Park, NC is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Staff Scientist to support the Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch, CMPB in the Division of Translational Toxicology, formerly known as the Division of the National Toxicology Program (DNTP). The mission of the DTT is to improve public health through data and knowledge development that are translatable, predictive, and timely. The DTT provides critical data for regulatory and non-regulatory stakeholder decision making to protect human health using epidemiological data, in vivo studies, alternative in vivo model systems, in vitro high-throughput screens and/or computational approaches. To achieve its mission, DTT scientists 1) collaborate with public stakeholders and global partners to identify and address public health issues, 2) generate and communicate trusted information to support decision making on environmental hazards, 3) lead the transformation of toxicology in the development and application of innovative tools and strategies, and 4) educate and train the next generation of translational toxicologists. DTT’s scientific goals are achieved through a distinct, highly cooperative and integrated team science operational model whereby scientific staff across multiple branches assemble into interdisciplinary project teams and utilize centrally managed shared resources, in contrast to the traditional NIH principal investigator-led research group model. The majority of research is carried out through use of external research and development contracts together with onsite intramural research capability. CMPB is a key contributor to DTT’s efforts to lead the science of toxicology and environmental public health by providing toxicologic pathology leadership and laboratory animal medicine expertise to meet the goals of the DTT using new technologies in biomedical research. A major function of the Branch is to provide a translational and mechanistic context to pathology outcomes with the integration of scientific data across all DTT branches and offices. In addition, CMPB trains pathology and laboratory animal medicine fellows to be leaders in multidisciplinary research. CMPB scientists and staff are responsible for the following general functions: developing new methods, approaches, and technologies in pathology and laboratory animal medicine. In addition, the Branch directs, manages, evaluates, and interprets all pathology data generated during the conduct of DTT toxicity and carcinogenicity studies, directs the DTT laboratory animal medicine program, establishes standards, terminology, and diagnostic criteria for rodent pathology, investigates molecular mechanisms of spontaneous and chemically induced nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in DTT studies, leads state-of the-science core pathology laboratories, oversees the scientific activities of the DTT archives and frozen tissue bank, provides diagnostic pathology expertise and collaborations with NIEHS investigators and the NIEHS laboratory animal colony. Roles and Responsibilities: NIEHS is seeking a staff scientist for Mouse Embryo Phenotyping (MEP) group within CMPB, in DTT, at NIEHS. MEP work is project-driven and supports divisional interdisciplinary investigators to advance its mission of providing broad support and training in mouse embryo phenotyping techniques in support of the NIEHS vision and mission. The scientific goals for MEP are achieved through a distinct and highly cooperative and integrated team science operational model, providing project assistance through the utilization of shared NIEHS Core facilities. A principal role for this position is to assist NIEHS investigators in assigning molecular underpinnings to developmental phenotypes encountered in genetically modified mouse models. The staff scientist will manage and be the lead contact for all project submissions to the MEP group. The staff scientist partners with a team consisting of a histologist and pathologist with expertise in developmental biology, tissue handling and pathology tailored to embryo phenotyping of genetically engineered mice under study. Additionally, the MEP staff scientist collaborates across the Institute to stay abreast of novel approaches and best practices for the integration of information technology and other solutions that may serve to scientifically advance projects submitted to the MEP group. As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources as a principal investigator, although they will often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the branch. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a research-based professional degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., D.V.M., or equivalent) in the life sciences. The candidate will have experience in developmental biology, the generation of genetically engineered mice and mouse embryo phenotyping. In addition, the candidate will have demonstrated a strong working knowledge of histology, pathology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, cellular biology, systems biology, and Next Generation Sequencing. As manager, the candidate must take a lead role in guiding and collaborating with NIEHS investigators in the discovery of a phenotype. The candidate should have knowledge and the ability to recommend to investigators and participate in advanced molecular techniques (e.g., spatial transcriptomics) that have the potential to aid in understanding the phenotype and advancing the project. Dear colleagues I am proud to share with you the December issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation (DTF) Newsletter, once again, masterfully prepared by our Managing Editors, Javier Asin and Jeann Leal. Thank you Javier and Jeann!!!!. This is a particularly large issue, with a huge amount of information on recent and future activities of the Foundation. The first order is to congratulate all the trainees and pathologists who received awards during the DTF Award Ceremony at the recent ACVP annual meeting in Seattle. Well done everyone! And special thanks to our volunteers who organized such a wonderful reception! Continuing with the ACVP meeting, the Foundation had, as usual, a very strong presence during the conference, and provided a robust list of training and network opportunities for everyone. This included, but was not limited to, the Pre-Meeting workshop on Gastrointestinal tumors, the two half days of the face-to-face session of the outstanding Foundations of Pathology course, the Scientific session of the Latin Comparative Pathology Group, the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and much more. And once again, all these activities were organized and carried out by our outstanding volunteers. Please remember them to say thanks every time you meet them. *DISCOVER Program* Driving Innovation in SCience through Opportunities for Veterinary Engagement in Research The DISCOVER Program is a 10-week summer biomedical research and clinical shadowing fellowship in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (DVMS) at MD Anderson Cancer Center. DISCOVER provides opportunities for veterinary medical students to engage in biomedical research and explore career paths in comparative medicine and pathology while under the guidance of a faculty mentor in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment. *Program Description* Students are paired with faculty mentors who provide guidance to complete a summer research project culminating in presentation of their work at the annual MD Anderson Summer Student Symposium. Faculty mentors also provide insight into career paths in laboratory animal medicine and comparative pathology and research. The role veterinary medicine plays in biomedical research will be highlighted throughout the program. Students also have the opportunity to learn hands-on skills such as animal handling, common procedures (e.g. injections, blood collection, ear tagging, genotyping oral gavage, necropsy, tissue collection, etc.), and other specialized procedure training such as aseptic technique, surgery, and suturing skills during rounds and wet labs. Students engage in didactic coursework by auditing graduate level courses(GS04 1011 Workshop for Experimental Training in Mouse Cancer Biology and GS12 144 Principles of Experimental Mouse Pathology) led by veterinary faculty and offered through MD Anderson’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Students will also attend scientific lectures, seminars, and career development events. Australian Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course in March: registration is open!

It's been five long years since our last course in Oceania, and we are super excited to offer a fully in-person version of the Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney March 31-April 4, 2025! As always, we will have lectures from Dr. Linden Craig (the necropsy queen), Dr. Jey Koehler (the "don't waste words" queen), and Dr. Patty Pesavento (the EM anchor queen) on recognizing, describing, and interpreting gross, microscopic, and ultrastructural lesions as well as choosing and critically evaluating special diagnostic techniques (IHC/ISH/PCR) and understanding macro-micro correlates. In addition to lectures, there are active learning exercises and learning assessments that include both image interpretation multiple-choice questions and histo descriptions from scanned slides. The course is geared toward trainees, but even working pathologists may find something new of interest, or a good review to jog your memory! Numbers are strictly limited so register early to avoid disappointment. Requirements - *Requirements:* DVM (or equivalent degree), board certification (or eligibility) by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV). If board-eligible, certification within 3 years of the date of hire will be required for continuation of appointment. Demonstrated experience and ability in postmortem examination of poultry species, diagnostic investigation, and diagnostic interpretation are required. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Comparative Pathology (Research Emphasis) The Johns Hopkins University Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology invites applications for our 4-year postdoctoral fellowship in anatomic veterinary pathology with a research emphasis, beginning in July 2025. This training is comparable to residency/PhD programs offered at veterinary schools and is distinguished by the broad research opportunities afforded by a large medical institution and the opportunity to pursue a PhD in a JHU graduate program. This is a 2-part program: three years of research training funded by the National Institutes of Health preceded by one year of pathology training funded by Johns Hopkins University. The program prepares trainees for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), and careers in biomedical research. Program During the first year the postdoctoral fellows gain comprehensive clinical experience in anatomic pathology through gross and microscopic examination of cases from the JHU animal colonies, local veterinary practitioners, the Maryland State Laboratory, the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium in Baltimore. A unique feature of this program is a rotation in human pathology. Didactic training consists of weekly lectures and pathology seminars plus peer-mentored boards study, gross and histopathology practice and journal review. In years 2 to 4, trainees participate in full-time mentored basic or translational research in a discipline of their choice. Postdoctoral fellows may pursue a PhD concurrent with their research training, finishing their PhD after completing the pathology fellowship. The first-year trainees receive an annual stipend, currently set at $62,132 Faculty Our faculty includes 10 veterinarians with ACVP and/or ACLAM board certification plus additional PhD faculty. Research interests include virology, parasitology, neuropathology, immunology, cardiovascular disease, proteomics, RNA biology, extracellular vesicles, rodent phenotyping and laboratory animal diseases. Postdoctoral fellows also may work with faculty from more than 30 academic departments forming Johns Hopkins Medicine. Qualifications This position is targeted for a veterinarian who wishes to pursue a career as a veterinarian scientist/ experimental anatomic pathologist in a research setting. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States who has graduated from an AVMA-accredited institution and has passed the NAVLE. Candidates from non AVMA-accredited institutions must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and must have the ECFVG or a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state of the United States.
