Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) School of Veterinary Medicine - University of Wisconsin-Madison The Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for a 1-year training position in comparative ocular pathology with a negotiable starting date as early as April 2023. This full-time 1-year program is designed to provide training in comparative ocular pathology and vision science by exposing the candidate to an extensive diagnostic caseload with the goal of broadening the applicant’s knowledge of diagnostic ocular pathology and vision science. Our hope is for the successful applicant to be interested in staying on as a long-term team member. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects based on their interest. Extension of the appointment is possible depending on mutual interest. Time off for ACVP certifying examination study is provided, if necessary. COMPARATIVE OCULAR PATHOLOGY LABORATORY OF WISCONSIN (COPLOW): We are a mail-in ocular pathology service that provides high quality ocular pathology diagnosis, interpretation and consultation specifically designed to be useful for board certified veterinary ophthalmologists and general practitioners treating ocular disease. The service receives around 8,000 cases per year and has almost 100,000 cases in the database archive. We have four board certified veterinary pathologists on our staff: Dr. Gillian Shaw (Senior Staff Pathologist), Dr. Megan Climans (Clinical instructor), Dr. Richard Dubielzig (the founder of the lab, currently serving as a volunteer pathologist) and Dr. Leandro Teixeira (Director of the laboratory). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - The applicant would have a primary responsibility of managing the pathology case material, grossing and photographing the globes. - Reviewing slides at our daily readouts with Drs. Teixeira, Shaw, Climans and Dubielzig - Writing pathology reports and following up on special procedures and consultations with our clients. 3RD YEAR RESIDENCY POSITION AVAILABLE, OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY Come explore the exciting world of pathology! The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in beautiful Stillwater, OK, invites applicants for a 3rd year anatomic pathology residency training position. We are seeking a highly motivated, hard-working, and dependable individual who has a DVM or equivalent degree, completed 2 years of an anatomic pathology residency program, successfully passed Phase I examination, and is interested in pursuing a career in diagnostic anatomic pathology. This is a full-time position for the duration of one year. Seven anatomic pathologists and three clinical pathologists are on faculty with a wide range of expertise, who recognize the importance of an enriched learning environment and understand that the ultimate goal is board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). In addition to the extensive and varied diagnostic case material presented to the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) each week, there are several rounds and seminars in addition to abundant archived material available for ACVP board preparation. There are also opportunities for creative scholarly activities. Independent studying and analysis of pathological concepts is also a key component of this program. Residents receive a travel stipend ($1500/year) to fund attendance and participation at pathology courses, workshops, and meetings designed to enrich their learning experience. Additionally, a one-time textbook stipend ($500.00) is afforded for each resident. Start date is July 31, 2023. Salary is $34,585 per year plus a benefits package that includes health insurance and fringe benefits. The Northeastern Vet Path Conference is back - and we are in person!

The NEVPC is coming back IN PERSON (only) this April, and we're going to the Zoo, literally! This year, the NEVPC will be held at the National Zoo in Washington DC (actually it is now the Smithsonian National Zoological and Conservation Biology Institute), on Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16. As in previous years, case presenters attend for FREE and the fee is only $50 for non-presenters and RACE credits will be available for this course. A lunchtime tour of the medical and pathology departments and a Saturday pay-as-you-go social event in neighboring Adams Morgan (the coolest place for DC nightlife) is planned. Job Opening - Veterinary Pathologist, UW Madison Primate Center, Madison Wisconsin (Onsite) Pathology Services Unit (PSU) staff work cooperatively with other WNPRC units to provide timely and accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring and interpretation of acute and chronic conditions affecting colony animals and subjects assigned to research studies. PSU staff serve an integral role in research at the WNPRC, offering services including but not limited to: clinical pathology testing; cytology evaluation; surgical biopsy; gross post mortem examination; specialized sample collections; and histology with unbiased interpretation of lesions in reference to the experimental questions and goals. PSU pathologists work closely with investigators to provide advice concerning protocol development (both pre and post award), anatomy, disease pathogenesis, sample collection procedures, and the modification and creation of innovative procedures to answer research hypotheses. Moreover, the outstanding services provided by the PSU rapidly identify confounding effects of pathogens and unanticipated biologic responses in both research studies and the primate breeding colony. The PSU works closely with investigators researching infectious diseases, vaccine development, reproductive health, transgenic animal models, models of aging, models of neurodegenerative diseases and neurophysiology, and stem cell biology. The PSU is responsible for the collection, banking/inventory, and distribution of nonhuman primate samples through both the Nonhuman Primate Biological Materials Distribution (NHPBMD) core and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Nonhuman Primate Tissue Bank. These banked tissues and biological samples are available to locally, nationally, and internationally located investigators for both research and education. RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides professional comparative and diagnostic pathology services and research support to veterinary professionals delivering quality veterinary care and research guidance. Develops and implements policies and operations for the pathology laboratory to ensure compliance with institutional policies, as well as federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Dear Colleagues Happy New Year! Welcome to 2023 and to the first issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation's Newsletter for the new year. This edition was masterfully prepared, as usual, by our outstanding Managing Editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. 2022 was a year of great and abundant training opportunities offered by the Foundation virtually and in person all over the world. Amongst the former, we had 172 meetings in English, Spanish or Portuguese, attended by a total of 22,435 participants from 103 different countries from (alphabetically) Albania to Vietnam. The number of in-person seminars and courses has been increasing progressively this past year, and we hope it will keep growing in 2023. A significant number of virtual training opportunities will still be available for free or at a very reduced cost for participants all over the world. Our outstanding team of volunteers is already working on the preparation of a vast and exciting program of training activities for 2023. Clinical Track Faculty Position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology The Department of Veterinary Biosciences (VBS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at The Ohio State University (OSU), is seeking outstanding candidates for a full-time clinical track faculty position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Position Overview Responsibilities: 1. Diagnostic service: The faculty member will participate in the autopsy and surgical biopsy services of the college’s Applied Pathology service. Service duties include: Serving as attending pathologist for standard post-mortem examinations as well as forensic and legal post-mortems; serving as attending pathologist for the biopsy service; and supervising anatomic pathology residents and rotating veterinary students. 2. Teaching: The faculty member will participate in clinical training of veterinary students as part of the senior student rotation in Applied Pathology, and diagnostic training and mentoring of pathology residents in the Combined Anatomic Pathology Residency/PhD Graduate Training Program. Didactic teaching responsibilities include participation in the professional veterinary medical curriculum and in the courses provided to pathology residents in the Combined Residency/PhD Program. 3. Research and scholarly activity: The faculty member will contribute to collaborative research and scholarly activity synergistic with the College’s research, teaching, and clinical service missions. Candidate Qualifications/Attributes Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution and be board-certified or board-eligible in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the European College of Veterinary Pathology. A PhD and/or demonstrated record of scholarship in pathology specialty are highly desirable. An overarching component of this position is training and mentoring students in a combined residency/PhD program. As usual, November was full of great training opportunities, including, amongst many others, the full-day DTF-ACVP Pre-Meeting Workshop in Boston, on Tumors of bone, cartilage and dental tissue, brilliantly delivered by Drs. Keren Dittmer, Rob Foster and Cindy Bell, under the expert coordination of Jennifer Chapman, and attended by 150 trainees and pathologists from all over the world. During the ACVP meeting, the Foundation also hosted, this year face to face for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, its traditional Award Ceremony. During this Ceremony, we honored some of our members who have provided outstanding services to the Foundation and the world pathology community. Please join me in congratulating all our awardees, including Bruce Williams (John King Award), Patty Pesavento (Bruce Williams Award), Francisco Carvallo (Barbara Jean Thompson Award), Anne Ching-Nga Tse and Carlton Park-Man Yuen (Best Diagnostic Exercise Award) and Irene Rodríguez-Gómez (Journal Award). The position will also require communicating results and providing interpretation to clients (other ADL diagnosticians, client veterinarians and animal owners, livestock producers, regulatory agency officials, etc.), for which knowledge of animal agriculture or experience as a food animal practitioner in Pennsylvania will be an advantage as this position will entail working with the mammalian field investigation group. The individual in this position will ensure implementation of quality control/assurance and safety, develop, or expand new test offerings/test platforms, and represent the mammalian pathology section both within PADLS and externally at scientific/veterinary meetings and conferences. Dear Colleagues Welcome to the November issue of the Davis Thompson Foundation's Newsletter, with our heartfelt thanks to our outstanding Managing Editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. As you peruse these pages, I hope you are as impressed as we are with the quantity and quality of the training activities that are the hallmark of your Foundation's mission. To highlight just a few, in October we kicked off with an outstanding full day of neuropathology during the DTF-AAVLD pre-meeting workshop in Minneapolis, given by Drs Raquel Rech, Kevin Woolard and Andrew Miller, and attended by a great crowd both in the room and virtually. Then, the first Foundation's Latin American Roadshow brought one of the greats of world pathology, Dr Alfonso Lopez, to Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Colombia, where for two weeks he shared his enormous knowledge and experience with more than 300 colleagues and students. This is a new initiative of the Foundation, and it will be repeated annually, bringing some of the best pathologists of the world to Latin America. November is also full of great training opportunities, including the full-day DTF-ACVP Pre-Meeting Workshop in Boston, on Tumors of bone, cartilage and dental tissue, delivered by Drs Keren Dittmer, Rob Foster and Cincy Bell. If you are in Boston, remember also that on Monday night the Foundation will host the traditional Award Ceremony, this year face to face for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Come and join us to celebrate our trainees and volunteers. Finally, both at the Pre-Meeting Workshop and the Award Ceremony during the ACVP meeting, we will be offering Foundation's merchandise and textbooks at a significantly discounted rate. The School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Director of the Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center. This 12-month (calendar year) tenured/tenure-track appointment will also hold an appointment as an associate or full professor. The apportionment is 100% administrative. The incumbent will strive to enhance the scholarship of the NVDC faculty associated with service and research. Administrative Relationships: The incumbent is responsible to the SVMBS Director for all diagnostic activities, administration, subject matter coordination, educational programming and outreach, operating budget, reporting, annual performance appraisal, and expenditure of professional travel funds. The Director of the SVMBS conducts annual performance evaluations of the NVDC faculty in consultation with the NVDC Director. The autopsy service sees a wide variety of species, including horses, cattle, small ruminants, swine, camelids, companion animals, wildlife, and occasional exotics. StageBio is seeking a full-time, experienced, board-certified veterinary pathologist to join our growing Medical Device team. Experience in medical device pathology not required and mentoring will be provided. Remote work eligibility is based on level of experience. Primary Responsibilities Include: - Serve as Principal Investigator and Study Pathologist for microscopic and macroscopic tissue assessment and reporting of anatomic pathology findings in both GLP and Non-GLP preclinical studies. - Collaborate with other StageBio Pathologists in multi-specialty preclinical studies and participate in internal and external peer reviews. - Work closely with laboratory personnel, overseeing trimming, imaging and histology conduct. Occasional trimming of study tissues. - Ensure GLP compliance for all work performed. - Interact with Study Directors/clients as needed. - Maintain continuing education through professional association affiliations, participation in relevant conferences and/or publication efforts. - Participate in Pathology Peer Review as needed. - Capture and annotate photomicrographs for inclusion in pathology reports. Requirements: - DVM/VMD degree and ECVP/ACVP (Anatomic Pathology) board certification.
