First ever Wildlife Disease Association pre-meeting workshop: forensics!

The Wildlife Disease Association and the Davis-Thompson Foundation are excited to offer a forensic science full day pre-meeting workshop prior to the 2023 WDA meeting in Athens, Georgia on Saturday, July 29. This workshop will offer training in a number of critical aspects of forensic investigation, particularly those relevant to wildlife species. The content will be delivered through a series of seminar presentations as well as discussions of actual forensic cases involving wildlife. Topics include chain of custody and security of samples, reporting, timing of death, species identification, documenting method of death, and expert witness testimony. Fantastic speakers! Free online Veterinary Ocular Pathology Atlas

Greetings everyone, The COPLOW lab is proud to announce we have just launched the Veterinary Ocular Pathology Atlas (VOPA). The VOPA is a *FREE* online histopathology atlas with dozens of veterinary ocular pathology cases from the COPLOW lab containing clinical information, gross images, and fully annotated scanned (APERIO) slides. The VOPA project was spearheaded by Dr. Ryan Taylor (former COPLOW pathologist, now anatomic pathology faculty at Cornell University) and through a partnership between COPLOW and VetDermPath Atlas, particularly Dr. David Gardiner (DACVP) and Drs. Bernstein and Whitley. Our hope is that the Atlas will be an ever-expanding resource of study material for those interested in ocular pathology, from vet students to board certified pathologists and ophthalmologists. *Faculty Position in Diagnostic Pathology* - The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a non-tenure track assistant/associate/full professor in Veterinary Pathology. The position is in the Mississippi Veterinary Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (MVRDL) in Pearl, MS. The MVRDL is a part of the AAVLD fully accredited Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory System which has laboratories at 3 sites. Responsibilities include participation in necropsy, biopsy, cytology, and poultry histopathology services of the MVRDL. Accessions to the MVRDL pathology service include submissions by veterinarians, producers, and the public from domestic animals and wildlife/exotic species. Interaction and consultation with veterinarians and producers is required. Participation in the college's graduate, professional, and undergraduate teaching programs is a minor responsibility and may be accomplished by participation in M.S. and Ph.D. graduate student committees, providing lectures in team taught courses, and instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students as part of their rotations through the laboratory. Opportunities exist within the college to participate in collaborative projects and case studies. The successful candidate will work directly with pathology faculty and other faculty in MVRDL and with poultry veterinarians in the Poultry Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (PRDL). University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate activities are required. Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent with completion of an anatomic pathology residency and board certification or eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the European College of Veterinary Pathologists. Diagnostic experience in poultry histopathology and wildlife/exotic species pathology is desired. Collegiality and excellent communication skills is required. The ability to attain licensure (faculty or traditional licensure) in Mississippi is required. Descriptive Veterinary Pathology registration is OPEN!

Look, I'm going to be real with you, folks. Whether you are in a commercial diagnostic pathology lab, an academic institution, a drug discovery team, or a CRO, being able to recognize and describe gross, microscopic, and ultrastructural findings and interpret IHC/ISH and PCR has always mattered, matters now, and will always matter. (At least until ChatGPT starts writing our reports!) The 2023 in-person Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course is a fantastic opportunity to separate yourself from your work responsibilities for a week, focus completely on your own education, and make friends you will have for a lifetime. Is it more expensive and logistically challenging to travel? Yes. Is the experience of taking this one precious week to focus only on your learning and not be distracted by 100 other things worth it? YES!! Please join us as we return to in-person format for the Descriptive Veterinary Pathology course at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to many hours of lectures by Drs. Linden Craig, Patty Pesavento, and myself, as well as FIVE mock tests including multiple-choice and slide descriptions, registration includes coffee breaks and a catered lunch each day. On Wednesday evening we have a social hour where you can get to know your fellow participants and hang out with the instructors and local hosts. This issue is chock full of information about our myriad training activities around the globe, including, amongst others, three of the 4 "big ones": Descriptive Veterinary Pathology Course, CLIIC, CLASS & POLA (Gen Path was already successfully completed in February). Also, have a look at the table of activities in Latin America with an impressive number of courses and seminars throughout the continent! Of particular interest is the article prepared by our Chief Financial Officer, Dr Bruce Williams, on the Foundation's Noah's Slidebox, a terrific new addition to the training toolbox of the Foundation and available for free to pathologists and trainees around the globe. This month we are very proud to present in our "Expert's Corner" section a great article prepared by Dr Roger Kelly (University of Queensland, Australia) on gross examination of the bone marrow. As Roger explains in his article, this is knowledge that comes after many years of working in the PM room and is hard, or sometimes impossible, to find in the literature. Another legend of veterinary pathology, Dr Grant Maxie, has provided this month's fantastic editorial on ongoing competence of diagnostic veterinary pathologists; look it in "JVDI in focus". Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) School of Veterinary Medicine - University of Wisconsin-Madison The Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for a 1-year training position in comparative ocular pathology with a negotiable starting date as early as April 2023. This full-time 1-year program is designed to provide training in comparative ocular pathology and vision science by exposing the candidate to an extensive diagnostic caseload with the goal of broadening the applicant’s knowledge of diagnostic ocular pathology and vision science. Our hope is for the successful applicant to be interested in staying on as a long-term team member. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects based on their interest. Extension of the appointment is possible depending on mutual interest. Time off for ACVP certifying examination study is provided, if necessary. COMPARATIVE OCULAR PATHOLOGY LABORATORY OF WISCONSIN (COPLOW): We are a mail-in ocular pathology service that provides high quality ocular pathology diagnosis, interpretation and consultation specifically designed to be useful for board certified veterinary ophthalmologists and general practitioners treating ocular disease. The service receives around 8,000 cases per year and has almost 100,000 cases in the database archive. We have four board certified veterinary pathologists on our staff: Dr. Gillian Shaw (Senior Staff Pathologist), Dr. Megan Climans (Clinical instructor), Dr. Richard Dubielzig (the founder of the lab, currently serving as a volunteer pathologist) and Dr. Leandro Teixeira (Director of the laboratory). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - The applicant would have a primary responsibility of managing the pathology case material, grossing and photographing the globes. - Reviewing slides at our daily readouts with Drs. Teixeira, Shaw, Climans and Dubielzig - Writing pathology reports and following up on special procedures and consultations with our clients. The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in beautiful Stillwater, OK, invites applicants for a 3rd year anatomic pathology residency training position. We are seeking a highly motivated, hard-working, and dependable individual who has a DVM or equivalent degree, completed 2 years of an anatomic pathology residency program, successfully passed Phase I examination, and is interested in pursuing a career in diagnostic anatomic pathology. This is a full-time position for the duration of one year. Seven anatomic pathologists and three clinical pathologists are on faculty with a wide range of expertise, who recognize the importance of an enriched learning environment and understand that the ultimate goal is board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). In addition to the extensive and varied diagnostic case material presented to the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) each week, there are several rounds and seminars in addition to abundant archived material available for ACVP board preparation. There are also opportunities for creative scholarly activities. Independent studying and analysis of pathological concepts is also a key component of this program. Residents receive a travel stipend ($1500/year) to fund attendance and participation at pathology courses, workshops, and meetings designed to enrich their learning experience. Additionally, a one-time textbook stipend ($500.00) is afforded for each resident. Start date is July 31, 2023. The Northeastern Vet Path Conference is back - and we are in person!

This year, the NEVPC will be held at the National Zoo in Washington DC (actually it is now the Smithsonian National Zoological and Conservation Biology Institute), on Saturday and Sunday, April 15 and 16. Job Opening - Veterinary Pathologist, UW Madison Primate Center, Madison Wisconsin (Onsite) Pathology Services Unit (PSU) staff work cooperatively with other WNPRC units to provide timely and accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring and interpretation of acute and chronic conditions affecting colony animals and subjects assigned to research studies. PSU staff serve an integral role in research at the WNPRC, offering services including but not limited to: clinical pathology testing; cytology evaluation; surgical biopsy; gross post mortem examination; specialized sample collections; and histology with unbiased interpretation of lesions in reference to the experimental questions and goals. PSU pathologists work closely with investigators to provide advice concerning protocol development (both pre and post award), anatomy, disease pathogenesis, sample collection procedures, and the modification and creation of innovative procedures to answer research hypotheses. Moreover, the outstanding services provided by the PSU rapidly identify confounding effects of pathogens and unanticipated biologic responses in both research studies and the primate breeding colony. The PSU works closely with investigators researching infectious diseases, vaccine development, reproductive health, transgenic animal models, models of aging, models of neurodegenerative diseases and neurophysiology, and stem cell biology. The PSU is responsible for the collection, banking/inventory, and distribution of nonhuman primate samples through both the Nonhuman Primate Biological Materials Distribution (NHPBMD) core and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Nonhuman Primate Tissue Bank. These banked tissues and biological samples are available to locally, nationally, and internationally located investigators for both research and education. RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides professional comparative and diagnostic pathology services and research support to veterinary professionals delivering quality veterinary care and research guidance. Develops and implements policies and operations for the pathology laboratory to ensure compliance with institutional policies, as well as federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Dear Colleagues Happy New Year! Welcome to 2023 and to the first issue of the Davis-Thompson Foundation's Newsletter for the new year. This edition was masterfully prepared, as usual, by our outstanding Managing Editors, Jeann Leal and Javier Asin. 2022 was a year of great and abundant training opportunities offered by the Foundation virtually and in person all over the world. Amongst the former, we had 172 meetings in English, Spanish or Portuguese, attended by a total of 22,435 participants from 103 different countries from (alphabetically) Albania to Vietnam. The number of in-person seminars and courses has been increasing progressively this past year, and we hope it will keep growing in 2023. A significant number of virtual training opportunities will still be available for free or at a very reduced cost for participants all over the world. Our outstanding team of volunteers is already working on the preparation of a vast and exciting program of training activities for 2023. The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine seeks a *Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist* for a full-time tenure-track or clinical track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate on the tenure-track position will seek to develop significant research activities, while the clinical track candidates will be expected to participate in significant collaborative research activities with other PBS faculty. Both tenure-track and clinical track candidates are expected to teach in the veterinary professional and PBS graduate curriculum, with emphasis in pathology (e.g., general pathology and systemic anatomic pathology) and will participate in the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) diagnostic activities including necropsies and biopsies. Training of residents, contributing to scholarly activity, and leadership within the department are also expected. The anatomic pathology service is an integral part of the LADDL, which also hosts laboratories for diagnostics and research in virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and molecular biology.
