Veterinary Pathologist Department of Comparative Medicine Penn State Hershey Animal Resource Program Penn State College of Medicine The Department of Comparative Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Medical Center seeks a veterinary anatomic pathologist to provide diagnostic and professional services in support of the organization’s research mission and to engage in teaching, research and other academic pursuits. Reporting to the Director, Penn State Hershey Animal Resource Program, the incumbent will provide diagnostic services in support of the organization’s research animal populations and provide pathology services and consultation to specific research programs and projects. The organization’s research portfolio receives approximately $102 million in annual extramural funding for investigations in cancer biology and therapeutics, cardiovascular disease, blood pump and ECLS development, diabetes mellitus and obesity, neural and behavioral sciences, infectious diseases, and immunology. The Animal Resource Program at Penn State College of Medicine provides care and support for approximately 16,000 animals housed in two centralized facilities and one satellite facility. As a faculty member of the Department of Comparative Medicine, the incumbent is expected to participate in teaching of veterinary residents, graduate students, and medical students, and collaborate on research and other scholarly activities. The appointment is at the Assistant Professor level; either tenure-track or fixed term depending on the experience and interest of the applicant. This position is primarily clinical, providing diagnostic and professional services in support of the organization’s research mission. In this role, the incumbent will work with diagnostic laboratory staff, clinical veterinarians, residents and veterinary technicians to diagnose and manage clinical cases identified in the research colonies; assist with disease surveillance and prevention programs. In addition, the incumbent will provide pathology services in support of specific research programs and projects. The selected individual is also encouraged to pursue and develop an independent area of research. In addition to diagnostic and research responsibilities, he/she will teach, and mentor graduate veterinarians enrolled in the department’s ACLAM-recognized training program. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills as well as teaching experience. Requirements include a license to practice veterinary medicine in the US. Applicants should have experience in laboratory animal diagnostic pathology, the ability to build and maintain positive collaborative relationships with investigators, and leadership experience. Preference will be given to candidates who hold board certification or eligibility (ACVP or ECVP) in veterinary anatomic pathology. Salary and rank commensurate with experience.
