The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases. This is a full time one-year position for a veterinarian (prosector) within the Pathology Services Unit (PSU) of the Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS) which provides advanced comparative pathology services to ONPRC core scientists, veterinarians, OHSU affiliates, and external investigators. This position serves the ONPRC mission through conduct of research-directed post mortem examinations, provision of tissues through the Tissue Distribution Program and diagnostic support of the NHP colony. The veterinary prosector performs post mortem examinations, interprets clinical histories, clinical pathology data, microbiology, and other ancillary test results, and prepares written reports of findings. Additional duties include resource development for the unit through digital slide scanning, data collation and interpretation, preparation of materials for manuscript preparation and image database inclusion, and support of the Tissue Distribution Program through record review, tissue dissections, and coordination of tissue collection for investigators. The veterinary prosector must communicate clearly with end users – research staff and veterinarians. Extensive on the job training will be provided for recognition of nonhuman primate (NHP) specific diseases, specialized techniques, including perfusion, and specialized tissue handling for tissue distribution. Required Qualifications - D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from a veterinary school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association - Pathology experience in DVM curriculum - Ability to communicate effectively in English, in written and oral formats - Strong organizational skills - Strong interpersonal skills - Work is performed in a laboratory setting, with potential risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, human and monkey tissue potentially containing agents infectious to humans including Macacine herpesvirus 1, other biohazardous agents, and dry ice - Some work conducted at Animal Biosafety Level 3 - Ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs. - Adequate manual dexterity and visual acuity to perform tissue dissections, gross and microscopic evaluations, and operate a microscope - Ability to wear required personal protective equipment including powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) - Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation Preferred Qualifications - Additional experience such as pathology-specific externships - Six months or more post- DVM clinical experience - Six months or more of research experience - Ability to organize data, prepare materials for scientific manuscripts Oregon Health & Science University values a diverse and culturally competent workforce.
