It appears that I shared a personal conversation concerning the upcoming CLASS/POLA course, and I certainly apologize for my oversight as I did not know that the person had also replied to the listserv.  The way the listserv is set up, his response was blocked and mine sailed through, unfortunately.

My response was not to in any way denigrate older lecturers (of which I am one) or to disrespect in any way the fine young (compared to me, everyone is young) pathologists who lecture at our courses.

Five years ago, I walked away from course directorship of the Descriptive, Gross, and POLA courses, fur the very reason I outlined in my original response.  I turned over my materials to everyone succeeding me at these courses (like I had received them years from those who I followed), and these great lecturers have built on the bones of my lectures and made them far better than they were when I delivered them.

That is the nature of these courses, and that is also why I take very few lecture opportunities (and no travel opportunities, as I strongly believe in promoting and rewarding great young pathology lecturers).  I see in them what Sam Thompson saw in me thirty years ago, and I believe, much like Sam did, that they deserve their shot. .

I apologize again for mis-sending my response - with great responsibility comes great opportunities to embarrass oneself on a fairly regular basis..

But please make sure to sign up for this great course (POLA is in its 65th year - and CLASS in its 20th - so we must be doing something right!)

If the old folks won’t get off the stage, the young folks can’t get on.  I started most of these young pathologists off with my lecture thee to five years ago, and they’ve built on it.

I still give all these lectures at JPC, but its time for the next generation to take over the courses.
