Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian at Purdue University
The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships (EVPRP) at Purdue University seeks a motivated, resourceful, and visionary individual to join our senior leadership team as the new Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian.
The Associate Vice President for Animal Resources and Attending Veterinarian is charged with ensuing outstanding animal care and welfare in all of the university’s research and teaching programs and facilitating optimal relationships among affiliated entities at Purdue. The successful candidate reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships, is a member of the EVPRP’s senior research leadership team, and would hold a clinical faculty appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Purdue’s AAALAC-accredited animal facilities and animal care program is extensive and comprehensive. It encompasses 11 sites, including locations on campus and throughout Indiana, with approximately 75 buildings that house animals. The total space devoted to animal housing is approximately 700,000 square feet and 2,000 acres of pasture. The average daily animal census of laboratory and agricultural animals maintained in Purdue facilities, including on- and off-campus, totals more than 56,000.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
● Lead the university’s animal care program.
● Oversee the veterinary care and husbandry for a variety of vertebrate animal species (including fish, rodents, dogs, cats, large ruminants, horses, and swine) at all Purdue-associated facilities.
● Develop, update and implement processes, policies and standard operation procedures for animal facility functions and animal care as needed to ensure animal care meets or exceeds all federal animal welfare regulations and guidelines, Purdue policies, and accreditation standards.
● Ensure that Purdue maintains full accreditation with AAALAC.
● Serve as a member of Purdue's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
● Coordinate and optimize space availability/allocation, and equipment requirements based on research staff needs across Purdue.
● Monitor accounting for animal facilities ensuring that accurate census data and time logs are maintained by staff. Forecast budget for equipment and supply needs, including new equipment purchases, and system/facility expansions and upgrades, and take steps to keep facilities within budget.
● Supervise all laboratory animal veterinarians and the animal husbandry/facility assistant director.
● Ensure standard operating procedures and policies are fully communicated to staff, implemented and correctly followed.
● Evaluate and determine staffing requirements for the animal research program and the centralized animal care program.
● Develop and implement training programs for all animal care and research personnel.
● Manage staff performance through coaching and recommend personnel actions which include hiring, training, promotion, and discipline. Conduct performance reviews of direct reports and assist area supervisors as needed in their evaluation of assigned staff.
● As a clinical faculty member, contribute to the teaching of professional veterinary students and veterinary nursing students, and lead a laboratory animal residency training program in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Medicine and industrial partners.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills
● Earned D.V.M or V.M.D. degree or equivalent
● ACLAM board certified.
● Experience managing facilities for the care and use of large numbers of animals in diverse multidisciplinary research and instructional programs.
● Skill in understanding federal regulatory requirements in the use of animals in agriculture as well as research settings.
● Demonstrated ability to provide effective program leadership, including workforce management and budget oversight.
● Skilled supervisor and coach, able to motivate or inspire both junior and senior staff.
● Proven ability to effectively organize, prioritize and perform multiple job functions and conflicting priorities, meet deadlines, and manage changing situations.
● Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills to manage complex tasks and/or those that require balancing competing interests.
● Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
● Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with discretion.
● Result driven, accepts and acts on all forms of feedback to effect change.
● Demonstrated success working with and providing leadership for a diverse and geographically dispersed team.
● Adaptable and open to change.
