Job Description: The RWU Department of Biology, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science (BMBES) in the Feinstein School of Social and Natural Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position of Aquatic Animal Veterinary Pathologist. It is expected that an appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This faculty position has duties shared between the department and the Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) in the Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED). The laboratory is a fully functioning diagnostic laboratory with two technicians and 3-5 undergraduate student employees and provides aquatic diagnostic services to aquaculturists and aquariums in the tri-state area (MA, CT, and RI). The laboratory also provides diagnostic services to RWU faculty in the care of aquarium species and other aquatic research animals. CEED programming includes a bivalve hatchery, an experimental aquaculture farm, a fish laboratory that has productive and innovative partnerships with local and national public aquariums, and a molecular microbiology research program focused on invertebrate-bacterial symbiosis and chemical ecology. The University is situated on Mt. Hope Bay, with an accessible dock and three vessels for teaching and research. Diagnostic service: The successful incumbent will direct and oversee the ADL. The person will be expected to develop and oversee routine molecular tests for diseases of aquatic animals and provide gross and histological evaluation of animals submitted to the laboratory. Research and scholarly activity: To help support the ADL, the successful incumbent will be expected to secure grant funding for disease research and collaborate on grant proposals by other researchers at RWU and other institutions. They also will mentor undergraduate research students and serve as the veterinarian of record for RWU IACUC. Teaching: The teaching load is two courses per semester, including Aquatic Animal Health (lecture and laboratory) and other courses within the expertise of the incumbent. As a member of the RWU faculty, the person appointed to the position will advise students and provide departmental, college, university, and professional service. Requirements: Required Qualifications A DVM/VMD One of the following: board Certified, or board eligible in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP)/European College of Veterinary Pathologist (ECVP); or hold a Ph.D. in anatomic pathology. Competency in aquatic animal medicine. Demonstrated research competence with an ability to compete for extramural funding Evidence of successful teaching experience. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals including faculty, staff, students, culturists, extension agents, regulators, and the general public.
