This three-year program conforms to the guidelines of, and fulfills the residency training requirements for, the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). The UF Veterinary Hospital sees a large, diverse, and unique caseload that includes numerous specialty services, as well as a busy exotic species/zoological medicine service, and provides many opportunities to develop a well-rounded foundation for the ACVP certifying examination and a career in diagnostic clinical pathology. Training will consist of the events and components listed below: · Evaluating cytopathology, hematology and hemostasis, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and endocrinology samples via direct casework. Compensation for after-hours service is available. · Completing structured rounds activities that include formal case data interpretation and description, journal and image clubs, special topic rounds, mock ACVP-ASVCP examinations, general pathology review sessions, and programmatic review of primary reference textbooks. · Developing a research project of manageable scope for publication and presentation. · Preparing and submitting at least one case report/series manuscript for publication. · Attending and presenting at regional, national, and/or international scientific meetings. · Participating in house officer seminars and instruction, and veterinary student didactic and laboratory instruction as required. The candidate selected will be supervised and mentored by a team of board-certified clinical pathologists (currently 4), while working closely with an excellent laboratory staff in a well-equipped laboratory. The service maintains strong and active working liaisons with the anatomic pathology section, making clinical services within the teaching hospital accessible, as well as numerous opportunities to engage in independent and collaborative research. Competitive candidates must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and graduates of AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges are preferred. Those with post-DVM clinical and/or clinical pathology-related experience are preferred. Selection will be based on quality of relevant experience and personal character, as reflected in professional reference letters, evidence of strong academic performance, and demonstrated motivation to pursue a career in veterinary clinical pathology. The ability to communicate clearly and tactfully in a team setting and the initiative to undertake structured, self-directed learning are critical personal skills that underpin all training activities. While the 2025 house officer salary is not yet formally set, it is expected to be at least $52,000 (the 2024 starting salary) with a generous benefits package available. Residents also receive a $500 annual professional development stipend to assist in funding conference attendance or other needs. Additional internal funding for research and/or travel can be applied for separately on a competitive basis. The position includes 15 days of paid time off per year and university holidays, although diagnostic service support will be necessary on some holidays. This appointment will be renewed annually, contingent on satisfactory progress as determined by semi-annual performance reviews.
