Combined PhD/Residency in Veterinary Pathology Iowa State University The Department of Veterinary Pathology is happy to announce a candidate search for the Dr. James J. Sheldon Fellowship. This is a combined residency/graduate program in veterinary pathology or parasitology, with a research focus on diseases affecting cattle. The ideal candidate is planning to pursue a career in food animal pathology in industry, teaching, or diagnostics and will be qualified for this role by attaining board certification in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a research dissertation related to cattle diseases. The Department of Veterinary Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University invites applications for a combined PhD/Residency position in veterinary pathology. This position is classified as a Graduate Research Assistant and is anticipated to result in completion of a PhD and eligibility for ACVP board certification (anatomic or clinical pathology); typical time for completion of PhD and ACVP board eligibility is 4-5 years. This program emphasizes an integrated approach to develop diagnostic, experimental design and critical thinking skills. Specific duties would include: 1. Pursuit of a graduate degree in veterinary pathology, performing research specifically related to diseases affecting cattle 2. Anatomic or clinical pathology residency training with intention to gain ACVP board certification These activities include: • Attendance and participation in required pathology rounds/seminars; • Rotations in diagnostic anatomic or clinical pathology serving the Lloyd VMC and area practitioners; • Assist in teaching pathology courses to DVM students • Preparation for and successful completion of Phase I and Phase II of the ACVP Certifying Exam process The goals of the program are to prepare for ACVP board certification, teaching, and the ability to be an independent investigator in the field of pathology/biomedical research. Faculty in the department conduct research in areas related to: cellular and molecular pathology, host defense mechanisms in infectious diseases, clostridial disease, leukocyte biology and trafficking, cellular immunology, lysosomal storage diseases, and parasitology. A strong collaborative environment is present on the campus of Iowa State University with the USDA ARS National Animal Disease Center and APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The department includes six ACVP board certified faculty members in anatomic pathology, four board certified faculty members in clinical pathology, and two faculty members in parasitology, one of whom is board certified by the ACVM. The department houses students pursuing PhD degrees in pathology, parasitology and interdepartmental programs in other biological sciences, bringing together a variety of national and international experiences and expertise. While we view applications holistically, the Graduate College expects a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale from an applicant’s prior degree program.
