Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Research Triangle Park, North Carolina *Staff Scientist 1 – Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch (CMPB) * NIEHS is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, to serve as clinical pathologist in the Comparative and Molecular Pathogenesis Branch (CMPB), within the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT). DTT is a team-based scientific organization, and its mission is to improve public health through development of data and knowledge that are translatable, predictive, and timely. Much of the work carried out by DTT is in support of the National Toxicology Program, an interagency partnership of the Food and Drug Administration, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and NIEHS. Staff scientists within DTT work in multidisciplinary teams and collaboratively with scientists in other federal agencies, institutes, industry, and academia. In addition to scientific research, staff scientists occupy a critical place servicing varying levels of intramural science providing laboratory and facility management, technical support and innovation, and managerial, administrative, and other mission support activities. A major goal of the CMPB is to provide a translational and mechanistic context to clinical pathology outcomes with the integration of various streams of scientific data. *Responsibilities:* May include but are not limited to; 1. Collaborate with internal and external researchers and other stakeholders for program-responsive outcomes with DTT, Division of Intramural Research (DIR) and others outside of NIEHS. 2. Initiate and maintain partnerships with scientific teams in the institute for the integration of *in vitro*, *in vivo, and computational* data, and for predicting and understanding the pathogenesis of disease processes. 3. Serve as hematology and clinical chemistry core laboratories leader, supervising two medical technologists. 4. Produce and deliver high-quality hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and cytological laboratory data, in a timely manner. 5. Provide on-site, program-responsive, support to DTT Program Management Teams for screening, prioritization, and mechanistic understanding of chemical effects and environmental factors related to human exposure and health. 6. Contribute to clinical pathology evaluations for DTT studies including specialized studies (e.g., cardiotoxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity), including those performed under contract Contribute to advancing clinical pathology capabilities in areas such as multiplex immunoassays, metabolomics, and proteomics. Support contract management staff in the development and evaluation of new capabilities, and maintenance of routine capabilities performed by DTT contract research organizations. 7. Participate in the global toxicologic pathology training program. 8. Conceptualize, develop, implement, evaluate, and monitor varying aspects of scientific projects and program plans. This includes anything clinical pathology related from test selection, qualification, QC management, etc. and study involvement from study design through test interpretation and communication for studies involving DIR and or DTT studies including NTP studies. Contribute to proactive technical and business approaches and operation practices, recommending and implementing cutting-edge and best practice for process improvement. 9. Engage with senior management and in public forums, foster stakeholder engagement, delegate responsibilities to contractors, individuals, and teams, and monitor progress to all facets of plan. 10. Supervise employees and fellows, promoting continuous skill and professional development, identifying knowledge and skill gaps, and providing constructive feedback and facilitative mentorship. *Qualifications: *The ideal candidate for this position will have; 1. DVM, VMD or equivalent with research, leadership, and training necessary to develop strategies for the conduct and management of complex projects. 2. Board certification in clinical pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or equivalent. 3. Demonstrated experience in the conduct of toxicology and biomedical studies, statistical analysis of data, and interpretation and reporting of experimental toxicological findings. 4. Recognition as a scientifically active and respected expert (e.g. as evidenced by honors, awards, board certification, invited presentations and consultations, elected positions in professional societies, invited reviewer for journals, publications). 5. Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills. 6. Ability to innovate and work in a team-based multi-disciplinary organization. 7. Ability to provide advice and consultation to both technical and non-technical personnel. It is preferred that the candidate reside within the local commuting area of Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. This position is not eligible for remote work. At the supervisor’s discretion, this position may offer work schedule flexibilities, including telework. As a NIH Title 42(g) Staff Scientist 1, the employee is generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position.
