Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) School of Veterinary Medicine - University of Wisconsin-Madison The Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks applicants for a 1-year training position in comparative ocular pathology with a negotiable starting date as early as April 2023. This full-time 1-year program is designed to provide training in comparative ocular pathology and vision science by exposing the candidate to an extensive diagnostic caseload with the goal of broadening the applicant’s knowledge of diagnostic ocular pathology and vision science. Our hope is for the successful applicant to be interested in staying on as a long-term team member. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research projects based on their interest. Extension of the appointment is possible depending on mutual interest. Time off for ACVP certifying examination study is provided, if necessary. COMPARATIVE OCULAR PATHOLOGY LABORATORY OF WISCONSIN (COPLOW): We are a mail-in ocular pathology service that provides high quality ocular pathology diagnosis, interpretation and consultation specifically designed to be useful for board certified veterinary ophthalmologists and general practitioners treating ocular disease. The service receives around 8,000 cases per year and has almost 100,000 cases in the database archive. We have four board certified veterinary pathologists on our staff: Dr. Gillian Shaw (Senior Staff Pathologist), Dr. Megan Climans (Clinical instructor), Dr. Richard Dubielzig (the founder of the lab, currently serving as a volunteer pathologist) and Dr. Leandro Teixeira (Director of the laboratory). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - The applicant would have a primary responsibility of managing the pathology case material, grossing and photographing the globes. - Reviewing slides at our daily readouts with Drs. Teixeira, Shaw, Climans and Dubielzig - Writing pathology reports and following up on special procedures and consultations with our clients. OTHER RESOURCES AVAILABLE: THE UW SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY SERVICE: The applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in multiple training and ACVP board preparation activities associated with UW’s anatomic pathology service, including: - Weekly diagnostic rounds and necropsy rounds from a diverse caseload from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Milwaukee County and Henry Villas Zoos, International Crane Foundation, Wisconsin DNR, and specialty clinics. - Weekly JPC (AFIP) rounds for honing microscopic description skills. - ACVP board prep gross pathology rounds - Weekly didactic pathology training sessions on a variety of topics THE SVM OPHTHALMOLOGY SERVICES, MCPHERSON EYE RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND THE DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY AND VISION SCIENCE: There are many lectures and programs in the broad field of vision science at the University of Wisconsin. REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a DVM (or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution, be a US citizens or permanent residents, and be board-certified or board- eligible in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or the European College of Veterinary Pathology. The position will command a salary of up to $100K annually depending on qualification with the expectation of incremental increases as time passes and if expectations are met.
