POSITION AVAILABLE Assistant / Associate Professor in Avian Health / Diagnostics / Food Safety The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine and the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) at Washington State University invite applications for a full-time, career (clinical) track Assistant or Associate Professor. This position is defined as 70% diagnostic service and outreach, 20% scholarly activity and 10% teaching. The service/outreach component would be devoted to avian health/diagnostics and food safety as the Branch Chief of WADDL-Puyallup branch laboratory of the WADDL System. The WADDL-Puyallup laboratory serves as the primary avian health resource for the State of Washington. The academic home of the position (Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology) and main WADDL laboratory are located on the main WSU campus in Pullman, WA. Efforts would include provision of gross postmortem service and overall case coordination for all laboratory accessions to WADDL-Puyallup, including microbiology, virology and serology. Microscopic pathology could be provided through WADDL-Pullman pathologists or by the successful candidate and is negotiable. The position would directly supervise the laboratory manager at WADDL-Puyallup who would have primary supervision of WADDL-Puyallup staff and food safety testing activities. Outreach would consist primarily of consultation, communication with and presentations to the poultry industry, backyard and exotic bird owners, and food industry in Washington State, often in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture and Washington State Veterinarian’s office. Teaching responsibilities would include instruction of fourth year veterinary students enrolled in the Avian Medicine Block course. Currently this consists of approximately two, two-week blocks, but expansion of this teaching opportunity is possible. Instruction would also include periodic guest presentations to post-DVM pathology and microbiology trainees in diagnostic avian medicine. Scholarly activity efforts will include collaborative research and other scholarly activity, with expectation for creative publication of diagnostic laboratory case information and collaborative research as a primary or collaborating investigator. A DVM (or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited institution) or AVMA Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification and completion of a post-DVM training program in diagnostic avian medicine are required. Preferred qualifications include: 1) Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a discipline related to avian/poultry health/medicine/science, food microbiology or similar discipline; 2) Diplomate status or board eligibility in the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP), American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (ACVM), or American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine (ACVPM); 3) Experience in poultry diagnostic medicine; 4) Experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory; 5) Experience in poultry health / diagnostic laboratory outreach and teaching/training; 6) Experience in laboratory supervision, and 7) Experience in food microbiology/food safety. WADDL is a fully accredited (AAVLD) laboratory system integrated within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University, Pullman, WA. WADDL has a main full-service laboratory on the main WSU campus in Pullman, WA and a branch laboratory in Puyallup, WA focused on avian health and food safety. WADDL-Puyallup is geographically located on a WSU extension campus in Puyallup, WA close to the major poultry producers in Washington State. Food safety testing is primarily focused on service to the poultry egg-layer industry but also serves small custom food processors. The WADDL mission is to provide accurate, state-of-the-art, timely, and cost-effective diagnostic services, consultation, disease surveillance and outreach to safeguard animal health, the food supply and public health and to contribute to the University and College of Veterinary Medicine through discovery, scholarly activity, and education. Both WADDL -Pullman and WADDL-Puyallup are active members of the USDA-APHIS National Animal Health Laboratory Network and FDA Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network. The WADDL-Puyallup laboratory provides services in pathology, microbiology, virology, serology, and molecular diagnostic and is supported by WADDL-Pullman services in bacteriology, histopathology/ immunohistochemistry, immunodiagnostics (including serology, virology), molecular diagnostics, necropsy, parasitology, and toxicology.
