*Fellowship in Zoo and Wildlife Disease Investigations – San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance* *Description and Details:* The Disease Investigations group at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has an opening for the Jane and Marshall Steel Fellowship beginning on or around August 1, 2021. The available position is a 1- 2 year, full-time fellowship open to veterinary anatomic pathologists interested in gaining diagnostic experience in non-domestic species, as well as to researchers seeking post-doctoral opportunities in conservation science. Fellows will be a part of a team of veterinary pathologists and researchers with expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, toxicology, and molecular biology. *Diagnostic Pathology Fellows*: Qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree, and at least two years of formal pathology residency training from a qualifying program; ACVP certification is preferred. The fellowship offers unique opportunities for development of diagnostic skills in anatomic and clinical pathology of nondomestic species. Fellows participate in the necropsy, biopsy, and cytology services under the supervision and instruction of five ACVP-certified pathologists. Case material includes a wide variety of non-domestic birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates derived from the collections of the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and from collaborative field conservation programs. In addition to rotating through diagnostic duty, the fellow will work closely with clinical veterinarians, curators, and animal care staff in addressing population health issues through monthly morbidity and mortality meetings. There is an expectation to complete a research project or publication from case material. There are also opportunities for mentorship of pathology residents and veterinary student externs. *Research Fellows:* Qualifications include a PhD or equivalent degree, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative group. A DVM is preferred but not required. Successful applicants will have research experience and application in fields related to wildlife and conservation with emphasis on veterinary medicine, infectious diseases, environmental or molecular toxicology, and/or epidemiology. Specific projects will depend on the expertise of the applicant and the priorities of the Disease Investigations group, which include both local and international efforts. There are opportunities to formulate collaborative objectives with other research groups including genetics, ecology, conservation technology, and reproductive and behavioral sciences. Additionally, there is opportunity to utilize clinical and pathology case material, working closely with clinical veterinarians and/or field researchers.
