Comparative Pathologist MIT Job Description *Position Overview:* The Comparative Pathologist will serve as the Assistant Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine for Comparative Pathology to direct the Division’s efforts to provide diagnostic and research pathology support, and to train the next generation of comparative medicine professionals in pathology. The Division of Comparative Medicine at Massachusetts Institute of Technology serves as the primary resource for the care, development and refinement of animal models within the MIT community. The Division is tasked with the care of a wide variety of species, including mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, swine, zebrafish, zebra finches, tree shrews, marmosets and macaques, and includes transgenic (mouse and nonhuman primate) and germ-free facilities. The successful candidate will join 12 other veterinarians in fulfilling the Division’s mission to provide the very best in animal care and collaborative research support; and will become an integral part of an established comparative medicine training program providing training to veterinarians and veterinary students in research, laboratory medicine and comparative pathology. Opportunities for collaboration abound, with the predominant research areas being cancer and neurocognitive research. *Principal Duties and Responsibilities:* 1. Collaborate with research investigators throughout MIT to provide comparative pathology expertise and support, including animal model development and phenotyping services. Actively seek to build productive collaborations throughout and beyond the MIT community. 2. Provide diagnostic pathology support for the Division, including actively participating in and directing / mentoring the activities of employees and trainees in providing necropsy and histopathology support. Oversee a staff of two to ensure the provision of high quality histopathology services to the Division and greater MIT community. 3. Lead and develop the training activities in comparative pathology for the Division’s veterinarian postdoctoral fellows who are pursuing formal training in research, comparative pathology and/or laboratory animal medicine. Participate in education and outreach to veterinary students interested in careers in research and/or comparative pathology; ensure that training opportunities are appropriate and sufficient for 1-2 trainees interested in pursuing ACVP boards. The opportunity to teach in undergraduate and graduate courses exists for the motivated candidate. 4. Opportunities exist and are encouraged to pursue independent and/or collaborative research and sponsored funding support beyond comparative pathology collaborations for the interested candidate. However, the longevity of this position is not contingent on the success of the recruit in procuring sponsored funding. *Supervision Received:* Supervision is provided by the Associate Director of the Division. Position requires ability to perform with minimal supervision. *Supervision Exercised:* One Histopathology Laboratory Manager and one research technician. Will be expected to mentor students at multiple learning levels. *Qualifications and Skills:* · DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA listed veterinary school is required. · Formal training in comparative pathology with Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathology (ECVP) strongly preferred. · Prior experience with rodent phenotyping and nonhuman primate pathology is ideal. · Prior experience collaborating with researchers and mentoring students will be considered favorably.
