HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Pathology Fellow performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in wildlife care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Pathology Fellow performs a variety of assigned pathology activities. This is a one-year position renewable for a maximum of two years. WHAT YOU WILL DO - Conducts and oversees gross necropsy examinations and tissue sample collections - Interprets clinical cytology specimens and laboratory analysis findings - Prepares reports and presents findings to clinical veterinarians - Keeps abreast of research and published literature - Presents documentation in the form of an external presentation or publication WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Disease Investigations group at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has an opening for the Jane and Marshall Steel Fellowship beginning on or around August 1, 2023. The available position is a 1-year, full-time fellowship in zoo and wildlife pathology. Fellows will be a part of a team of veterinary pathologists and researchers with expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, toxicology, and molecular biology. Required qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree and at least two years of formal pathology residency training from a qualifying program (ACVP board eligibility). ACVP board certification is preferred, but not required. The fellowship offers unique opportunities for development of diagnostic skills in anatomic and clinical pathology of nondomestic species. Fellows participate in the necropsy, biopsy, and cytology services under the supervision and instruction of five ACVP-certified pathologists. Case material includes a wide variety of non-domestic birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates derived from the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and from collaborative field conservation programs. In addition to rotating through diagnostic duty, the fellow will work closely with clinical veterinarians, curators, and animal care staff in addressing population health issues through monthly morbidity and mortality meetings. There is an expectation to complete a research project or publication from case material. There are also opportunities for mentorship of pathology residents and veterinary student externs. There are weekly histopathology conferences to assist in preparation for the ACVP board exam, if necessary.
