Updated code of conduct document
All - here is your updated and slightly shortened version of the Code of Conduct for the Foundation. This has already been vetted by Paco and Jey as well, as we sifted through your comments. Bruce! This looks just fine I think for our purposes. Some actions are open to interpretation I think but I don’t know how you can more explicitly characterize every possible thing. It sends the message about what we will not tolerate and that’s the most important thing I think. While I would vote yes to approval of this code I do have a question on the 2a stipulation concerning one on one meetings with “students” Are students defined as those still in school or any attending persons? What if that so called student is a close friend or relative to the instructor? Do we then have to find a way to get permission to have dinner with said friend or have to invite another person to make it acceptable? Does it matter if they are similar or opposite genders? I' m not trying to be difficult, but can think of any number of occasions where this absolute denial of such interactions would seem burdensome Annette. I don’t want to reopen discussion on this (as we had it open for two weeks), but MY feeling is that is to protect both instructor and student. If you can’t hang with faculty for the few days you are at a course, then find another person or two so you aren’t alone with a course attendee. It doesn’t matter which gender these days. These days we should be wiser than to be alone with students - but what people do on their own outside of Foundation activities is their own business, not ours. DISCUSSION AGAIN CLOSED.

I agree with Bruce, the code can't cover every case. You can make a relationship obvious to everyone else by stating that your cousin or fiancee, or whomever is attending the course by introducing them. Make sure that there is no favoritism to shown them during the course, and people won't question anyone if they see the two of you having a meal together. They will report their findings to the President and CEO of the Foundation with action recommendations. Honesty, I would imagine these would largely fall into a discussion with the faculty member (or student) about the appropriateness of behavior, and in more obvious or severe infractions, banning a faculty member or student from participating in future Foundation activities. We are concerned at this time only with problems that occur at Foundation activities - we do not plan on policing actions outside of those constraints - it is not our job.

While some advocated for a much shorter document, three of us believe that the concrete examples of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors listed in the document are important, because it would not only outline our expectations to faculty and student alike, but it prevents people after the fact from saying “I didn’t understand that was what you meant”. Also, the section on fraternization has been completely reworded.
Please vote yea or nay on the final document. If the nays carry the day, we will certainly go back and continue work.
Following this vote (last day to vote is Wednesday 8 April), we will move to the next steps, which will include distribution to existing Board and Faculty for signatures. We are also currently working on Step There, which is an anonymized (or not) reporting system.
