Meant to reply to all... I believe one can monetize videos as "pay per view" on Youtube depending on the size of the channel. That could be an option for the foundation. Usually a percentage of the money goes to the platform and I do not know how much that is on YouTube. If not, uploading the seminars to Vimeo is an option (another video platform). Vimeo allows the charge per view with a 90% of the profit to the creator. A different option is to seek industry sponsorship for the rebroadcasting. We could then introduce a small mention of the partner/sponsor to the video, or logo or a quick "commercial" and continue to provide it for free. I have no idea how attainable that is as I have never worked with sponsors in our industry but it seems like a marketing bargain to me (target market, young professionals, ads attached to leaders in the industry, etc) There are advantages to both sides (the Foundation and attendees) if we could offer a "view at you on schedule" and also offer a CE certificate as well (e.g.: for a limited period of rebroadcast time). There is the time zone issue and also lot of colleagues don't have much flexibility with their work schedule. Would that be in accordance with the CE regulations? Sorry for the rambling message but I wanted to toss these options out there. Looking forward to further addressing this. As most of you know, we rebroadcast almost all of our Tuesday and Friday seminars.
Now Friday seminars are free, so we don’t expect them to bring in a revenue stream.
With the Tuesday seminars, we do charge $50 for an all day seminar (which pays for the RACE, and really, this is the Foundation’s largely sole source of income at the moment, along with our four core multi-way courses).
Our Tuesday seminar topic are times and our speakers top-notch. However, a lot of folks simply wait until a rebroadcast, where they can get this material, which we are ALL working very hard on, for free.
This is not to say that the Foundation is money-oriented, and i can certainly understand the folks that are in awkward time zones. It’s not really a problem yet, but I can see it becoming one going forward, if our core customers in the Americas decide it is easier to “game the system”, wait a day, save money (and in doing so, not support the Foundation).
It’s not an easy solution, so I am very open to how you all see this will play out and any suggestions you may have.
At the moment, I am going to stop the comments on our FB seminar announcements to prevent people from asking about rebroadcasting (one person asks, 4000 people know.) I will still continue to answer emails about it one-on-one, especially to folks in other time zones. This way people will at least have to wonder if they will have a chance to see them later on….and it may force a few to rearrange their schedule and not rely on the largesse of the Foundation.
$50 isn’t really much for 8 hours of RACE CE - for comparison, the ACVP will be charging $150 for a very similar workshop (our annual ACVP workshop) on Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology which we have put together…
So I am interested in everyone’s viewpoint about how to maintain our small revenue stream AND rebroadcasts going forward.
