Hi folks - sorry it’s taken me a while to write this e-mail. Everyone here has been volunteered (corralled, shanghaied, forced, whatever synonym you’d like to use) to be on the new website committee for the Davis/Thompson Foundation. Thanks for your willingness (or otherwise!) to help! Specifically, we’re looking to migrate the current site from raw HTML / Perl / spit and twine to a more modern, easy-to-use, easy-to-update platform. The plan is to go with Wordpress, as it’s the most popular and therefore easiest to integrate with the most things. I’ve set up a test site at https://testwp.cldavis.org. I hope you all got an e-mail letting you know you have an account - I also hope I got everyone’s name correct! If you can’t log in, let me know and I’ll work on getting you a password. I’m especially interested in everyone’s opinion as to what the site should look like - I’m terrible at art and design, both of which are major components of this. If we come up with ideas, we can try and find themes that will make Wordpress look that way. Another of the things about Wordpress is that there are a large number of programs that let you modify how it works, called plugins, available. I have some thoughts on plug-ins that might be useful - however, I’m looking for opinions. Specifically, if you can think of what you want the site to do, we can probably find a plug-in that will do it. Ones I’ve found so far: FB Integration - https://smashballoon.com/custom-facebook-feed/ - lets us grab Facebook posts and put them on the website. Youtube - https://wordpress.org/plugins/youtube-embed-plus/ - lets us create a post on the site for each new Youtube video. Document signing - https://www.approveme.com/email-limited-pricing/ - this lets us have speakers electronically sign the code of conduct. WP Super Cache - speeds up webpage speeds. GDPR - https://wordpress.org/plugins/cookie-notice/ - posts the notice about cookies required by the EU’s GDPR. Translate? - https://wordpress.org/plugins/translatepress-multilingual/ - this would automatically translate the site into different languages. I’m not sure how well it would work given our technical / medical bent, but might be interesting. Zoom integration? - I haven’t found a great plugin for this yet, but it should let us integrate Zoom meetings with the site. Wordpress SAML integration? - https://wordpress.org/plugins/miniorange-wp-as-saml-idp/ - this would let us have one sign-in across all of our sites (Canvas, the website, etc.). Probably more of a long-term project. MOLIE - https://github.com/pgogy/WordPress-MOLIE - This was interesting, but doesn’t seem to be active right now. This was trying to take a Canvas course that’s completed and turn it into a Wordpress page, with all the info, etc. archived.
